Sound leveling?

Can someone explain to me the concept of "sound leveling" which MusicMatch lets you do before transferring songs to the iPOD. Does it merely make the volume level consistent across all the songs?

Also, I'm trying out MediaCenter 9 and I don't see an option for sound leveling in the iPOD "mode." Is there something in Media Center 9 I should know about, in terms processing the quality/volume of music in my library, either as part of transferring music to the iPOD, or as a seperate process?

Thanks!

There is a feature to "normalize" the volume of the songs. Essentially what this does is make the volume on all the songs about the same.

The reason I don't like it is that it takes forever to upload because the songs have to be analyzed before uploading.

It's not available as part of syncing I don't think, but if use the Upload method, right below the Upload button is an Options button that allow you to normalize...

What is the time difference between normal uploading and "normalizing"? - and is there truely any benefit from it?
Once done does it need to be done again - ie each time?
Cheers!

I haven't done it myself so I don't know for sure how much longer it takes. I do know that it's considerable.

I for one don't bother. I mean I don't really notice a difference between songs on my iPod. It's just not work the hassle.

That's me though...kinda lazy.
