Software Compendium

Originally posted by Kurt (c.c.r.) from the old Forums:

I wanted to try and collect all the info about the various iPod apps in one spot.

If you would like to reply to this thread, please do. However, please only post replies that add to the information here or add new programs. Also try to stick to the format. Let's keep discussion of the pros and cons of these programs in other threads and keep this one just for the compilation and cataloging of programs.

Cheers!

MusicMatch Jukebox (MMJB)(www.musicmatch.com (http://www.musicmatch.com/download/free/index.cgi
?OEM=APPLE))
The CD that comes with a Windows-formatted iPod contains a special edition of MMJB v7.1 and a "Portables" plugin. This is the method that Apple has decided will be best for you, as a Windows user, to enjoy your iPod.

MMJB falls into the "iPod Management" and "Music Management" categories; With this version of MMJB, you can:
- Rip CDs into MP3s.
- Edit your MP3 tag information.
- Create custom playlists on your local machine.
- Manage your iPod's music database (with Apple's version of MMJB only):
- Send/synch your MMJB playlists and files to/with your iPod.
- Create and manage playlists on your iPod.
- Delete songs from your iPod.
- Rename your iPod.

iPod for Windows
The CD that comes with a Windows-formatted iPod also contains this software package. It includes two pieces of software:
- iPodwatcher: A small utility that runs in the system tray and monitors your iPod's mounted/unmounted state, as well as its connected/disconnected state.
- iPod Software 1.2 Updater: A very important utility that lets you restore or update an iPod's firmware to Windows v1.2 or later. This program is highly sought-after because it will allow you to convert a MacPod into a WinniePod.

Media Center 9(iPod Management, Music Management)

http://www.jrmediacenter.com

- 30-day trial version, $39.95 to license.

- MC9 is currently the only Windows program that supports full synchronization of the iPod's Ratings, Playcounts and Last Played information. What this means is that if you change a Rating on a song on the iPod, when you sync with MC9, that rating change will be reflected in MC9s library. And any smartlists you have based on Ratings will be updated accordingly. Same with the Playcounts and Last Played date.

Essentially, your iPod listening habits are now fully sync'd with MC9's library and all smartlists will be updated accordingly. This is new for windows users of the iPod. You can check out this thread (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8447) for more information.

- Serves as your default media player Rip CDs, internet lookup via YADB, encode to/playback from mp3, ogg, ape, etc. Excellent tagging features, including tag from filename, and tab-based rename. Great database; tracking of play counts, ratings, import dates, and more. Create/manage playlists and smartlists on your local machine. Other features include TV and PVR functions, CD burner, internet radio, image and video support, and "Hairstyle," an under construction competitor to Windows Media Center.
- Manage your iPod's music database: Send/synch your MJ smartlists, playlists and files to/with your iPod. Create and manage playlists on your iPod. Delete songs from your iPod. Safety convert function that will convert your music to mp3 during transfer. Good if you want to hear your .ogg and .ape on your iPod but don't want to have two copies of each file. Finally, the PC has a media player that has the potential to live up to the "iTunes experience" with an iPod. Smartlist synching has arrived! Play count updates may be in the immediate future! Composer tag support is also a strong possibility.

Ephpod(www.ephpod.com)
Ephpod was originally designed to be used in conjunction with Macdrive or Macopener (programs that let you read HFS-formatted disks on a Windows PC), and thusly, to allow someone to use a MacPod on a PC. Since the advent of WinniePods, the iPod community has discovered that Ephpod can be used to manage an iPod with zero additional software.

The current version of Ephpod (2.57) falls into the "iPod Management" and "iPod PDA Management" categories, allowing you to:
- Send/synch local files, folders, and .m3u playlists to/with your iPod.
- Create and manage playlists on your iPod.
- Delete songs from your iPod.
- Rename your iPod.
- Export contacts from Microsoft Outlook and send them to your iPod.
- Create basic appointments and send them to your iPod.
- Perform a host of other utilitarian and maintenance functions on your iPod.

XPlay(www.mediafour.com/products/xplay)
The current version of XPlay (v1.0.3) works with both MacPods and WinniePods.

XPlay is geared to work differently than most other programs. Rather than giving you a program that you run everytime you want to interface with your pod, it runs as a system service and integrates your iPod's music database into Windows Explorer. You can configure your iPod by right-clicking it in My Computer. XPlay also provides a condiut for Windows Media Player 8 and 9, in effect giving WMP the same functionality that MMJB (above) provides.

XPlay falls solely into the "iPod Management" category, allowing you (via Windows Explorer and Windows Media Player) to:
- Send/Synch local files, folders, and .m3u playlists to/with your iPod.
- Create and manage playlists on your iPod.
- Delete songs from your iPod.
- Rename your iPod.

EAC/LAME, CDEx
These programs have nothing at all to do with the iPod, per se. They are, however, excellent freeware tools that you can use to create MP3's on your hard drive. These programs fit into the "Music Management" category.
- EAC, or Exact Audio Copy, is arguably the best utility to dump (or "rip") CD audio to .wav. (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/)
- LAME is often used in conjunction with EAC, and is arguably the best utility to encode .wav to .mp3. (http://www.mp3dev.org/mp3/)
- CDEx is an outstanding freeware program that rips CD audio to .wav and encodes .wav to .mp3. (http://www.cdex.n3.net/)

Dr. Tag, Tag & Rename, Remamer
These programs also have zero to do with your iPod. However, they are very useful for managing your mp3 collection. You see, the iPod displays songs based on their id3 tags. If your tags aren't set properly, then your songs won't be displayed properly on your iPod. So, you can use these programs to properly tag your files. They also fall squarely into the "Music Management" category.
- Tag & Rename link: http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm
- Dr. Tag link: http://www.drtag.de/en/
- Renamer (freeware) link: http://www.albert.nu/programs/renamer/

Another excellent ID3 tagging program, not quite as slick as Tag&Rename but a little more versatile (IMO) and it's freeware!

iPodRemove (iPod System Utility)

Updated (10/08/05) link for this software for downloading zip file:
http://www.pautinka.com/downloads/iPodRemove1_0.zip

These links are no longer being used:
http://www.singnet.com.sg/~kyrandia/iPodRemove1_0.zip or
http://pimpin-seattle.d2g.com/files/iPodRemove1_0.zip

FREEWARE

iPodRemove is program created by iPodlounger LeftFieldSG. It is a simple .exe that, when run, will unmount your iPod so you can safely unplug it. No more clicking on the little "Safely Remove Hardware" icon at your system tray. iPodRemove works independently of any other program, so no matter HOW you use your WinniePod, this program will successfully unmount it.

Since it's a standalone .exe, you can use it in some very creative ways: Create a shortcut on your quick-launch toolbar, Start menu, or desktop for easy access Create a shortcut and assign a CTRL-ALT-key hotkey to it Assign it to a key on your multimedia keyboard, if supported (I have mine assigned to the "calculator" key of my Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro) Call it via command-line, script, or batch file Set up a command in Girder (www.girder.nl) and dismount your iPod via remote controlThat's all I can think of now, but you can begin to see how incredibly versatile this program is.

Outpod
Outpod is a freeware program, created and supported solely by the author, that falls into the "iPod PDA Management" category. It is, in my experience, the very best way to mass-export your Outlook contacts and appointments to your iPod. Definately worth a look. (www.stoer.de/ipod/ipod_en.htm)

Also see this location for a list of free and shareware 3rd party programs that will also transfer from the iPod contents back to your computer including videos and podcasts:

Guys, I'm merging this. I know that you want a sepearate compendium, but we gotta keep things in one place for consistencies sake.

I'll remove some of the extraneous posts.

IMPORTANT
If you want to add new software here follow the format exactly. Other wise your posts will be deleted. And if you have a question about a particular piece of software, don't post here about it. Start a new thread.

Posts here will be deleted w/o warning if they 1) don't follow the format and 2) are not announcing new iPod Software products.

Thanks,

MyPodPlayer

Get it from the Software section at
http://www.iPodSoft.com/

A program to play your music on the iPod from anywhere. Just install the program on your system, and then Extras --> Copy to iPod. Now you can find and play your music anywhere. Plug your iPod in, run MyPodPlayer, and your music database is there ready to be played.

The program actually reads your iPod database so it knows all the information, and the inbuilt player can play mp3's, wav's and aifs, but not aac yet :( which is why support for external/default players is included.

foobar2000 with foo_pod.dll plugin and faac.exe codec (iPod Management, Music Management)

http://www.foobar2000.org/ official audio player site
http://www.loodi.com/foo_pod.zip download link for foo_pod
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?act=ST&f=33&t=19156 HA forum thread discussing foo_pod
http://www.audiocoding.com/modules/wiki/?page=FAAC everything about FAAC, the open source AAC encoder, and how to use it with apps like foobar2000
http://www.rarewares.org/aac.html download link for faac.exe

- freeware (all parts)
- minimum system requirements: foo_pod WinXP or Win2k until now, foobar2000 and faac.exe Win95

Foobar2000 has been developed by Peter Pawlowski, former Winamp developer, and others to be a high-quality, no-nonsense audio player. It has been expanded with unique features that in some way make it the "Swiss Army knife of audio apps" now like internal SSRC resampler and ReplayGain modules, a database and all sorts of external input and output plugins.

One of the latest plugins is foo_pod, enabling foobar2000 to manage file transfer and management to and from the iPod as well as direct transcoding from any input format to either MP3 with LAME or AAC/MP4 with FAAC (command line version) or Nero AAC. This plugin only works with WinXP or Win2k yet, but the developer is open to suggestions to provide a version for older OS, too.

FAAC is the only open source AAC codec and has been improved and extended a lot since 2002, see e.g. this comparison of AAC codecs (http://www.rjamorim.com/test/aac128v2/results.html). The latest v1.24 is able to tag MP4 files on the command line which is important when using faac.exe together with CD rippers or transcoders like EAC, CDex, Audiograbber or GX::Transcoder. There are also output plugins for other apps, e.g. cool_faac for CoolEdit/Adobe Audition, out_faac for Winamp 2.x/5.x and libfaac for winLAME and others.

Being open source, this codec is also used in Linux and Mac OS X applications, e.g. in the latest gnuPod version which is a file transfer and transcoding program for the Linux console. The decoder FAAD2 also enables multimedia players like VLC to play files and HTTP streams from internet radio stations like SomaFM. See the project summary on Freshmeat.net (http://freshmeat.net/projects/faac/).

MarkAble

MarkAble is designed for audiobook listeners who own an Apple iPod, or who use iTunes to listen to such books. Or for those who listen to podcasts and would like to combine casts into a bookmarkable format.

Audiobook files bought from the iTunes Music Store or from Audible.com are 'bookmarking' - that is, the iPod (or iTunes) remembers the point of the book where you were up to, and resumes from there when you start listening again. This, of course, is vital.

However, there are many other sources of audiobooks. Such books may be in a variety of different formats such as MP3 files (for example, from podcasts, www.audiobooksforfree.com or www.telltaleweekly.com), or audio CDs or tapes you may have bought. Getting these into a format which is bookmarking like the books from Audible.com is a tedious and difficult process - or at least, it has been up until now.

Now you can use MarkAble, which does all the work for you!

eyeJamz (http://www.eyejamz.com)

eyeJamz downloads all the Album cover art for all the music tracks you have in your iTunes program. Please visit our web site at eyejamz-dot-com for a more detailed look at our application because eyeJamz is far more than an album art grabber.

eyeJamz v1.2 features some very advanced code that avoids the typical Amazon server errors with non-standard characters in your Artist/Album text. This helps to make searches for album covers bullet proof with no errors to shut your searches down.

eyeJamz will display ALL your album cover art in one panel so that you can browse through all your music tracks arranged by Artist or Album. This is similar to browsing a real music collection so that you get the visual stimulation of the art work along with the intelligence of advanced software.

Plus eyeJamz gives you the option to display your art from 80x80 all the way up to 300x300. The details in the album cover art really stand out at 300x300.

Click on a cover to play it. Right click on a cover to bring a menu with numerous functions. One of my favorites is the ability to attach the cover art to iTunes with a click; then I can easily synch the cover art to my iPod Photo.

You can tag certain Albums as favorites and display only those favorite covers or display only the covers in the current playlist (eyeJamzList).

eyejamz will do in-depth searches from 20 hits up to 100 hits for those rare covers!

eyeJamz also makes it easy to change the art work for a particular cover. You can even import art from your hard drive.

The latest version, v1.2, has some advanced code that avoids the typical Amazon server errors with non-standard characters in your Artist/Album text.

There are just too many features to list all of them here. Please visit our web site at: eyejamz-dot-com

your pod. your way. nPod

nPod Jr is an interim release of a larger open source project and is intended to address a specific and immediate need of the iPod user base:

pod to computer file copy (windows, .net framework 1.1)

What nPod Jr currently does:

Does browse iPod and copy songs to your computer.
Does allow you to back-up your iPod data files.
(techies can use nPod Jr to examine backup database files via the tools menu)

That's it.

What nPod Jr does NOT do:

Does NOT Write to your pod. ever .
It even yells at you if you try to copy songs from your pod to your pod by accident. It is a copy utility.

nPod Jr WILL NOT BREAK YOUR IPOD. Use it with confidence.

Full featured pod management coming soon with nPod Sr.

iTunes Folder Watch for Windows [1.0.16]

Watch folder(s) for new files, and push them to iTunes. FREEWARE (http://albumbrowser.galleytech.com/iTunesFolderWatch.html).

This program is a companion for iTunes (Windows).

Are you frustrated that iTunes does not automatically detect new tracks in certain nominated folders and add them to the library automatically? This program does exactly that. It allows you to set up "Watch Folders" and to evaluate whether there are any new tracks in them which do not exist in iTunes, and allows you to add them selectively or fully automatically.

It can be run as a taskbar process and so will continually monitor the watch folders, alternatively it may be run in the foreground on demand. Please evaluate & provide feedback via the Forum.

This program is FREE to beta-testers, but if you appreciate the program you may donate via the following link: paypal link on page.

Additional Components
Requires Microsoft .NET Framework v2.0. You can get the .NET Framework from the Windows Update page.

Edited: Added additonal information from website.

Can build you really good automatic playlists that you can listen to all day. All you need to do is pick a track and it builds you a quality mix - that throws in lots of songs you didn't know you had as well as lots of your favourites.

Also has the killer ability to be able to create automatic playlists for your iPods which refresh every time you plug it in with new tunes. I've got a gym playlist and a commute playlist that help see me through the day.

Recommended to say the very least!!

See this thread for information and links to this software: A new iPod tool is born... (JakPod) (http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=192437)

Hi,

i have written a little application to copy music from your computer to the iPod, from the iPod back to your computer and (maybe the best thing) from one iPod to another iPod.
Because of this application is written in java you can use it on Linux or Windows or even on a Mac. Here (http://www.jakpod.de/content/view/16/34/) you can find some screenshots.
The Homepage is only in german (until now) but if you start the application (called "JakPod") on a system with an default locale that is not german you will see an english version of JakPod. I hope JakPod is self-explanatory. If not - don't hesitate to ask (here or in the JakPod Forum (http://www.jakpod.de/component/option,com_wrapper/Itemid,8/)).

Maybe one important thing to know: you need a Java 6 JRE to run JakPod. You can download it here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) (the 4th download from the top).

A short "installation" instruction:

- download JakPod (from here (http://www.jakpod.de/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,27/))
- extract the downloaded "zip" package to a place you want (e.g. "D:\JakPod" or even on the iPod itself)
- navigate to the installation folder ond start JakPod by using the "jakpod.bat" (on Windows) or "jakpod.sh" (on Linux - remember to make it executeable).

Thats all.

Give it a try - it's freeware.

iPod.iTunes Version 3.4.3

iPod.iTunes (http://www.crispsofties.com/i.i/index.html)
Synchronization from iTunes to iPod is especially useful if you want to synchronize from your iTunes library to an iPod which is linked/synced with another iTunes library.)

iPod.iTunes evaluates the source for songs, videos, podcasts and/or playlists that are not in the target and only adds these seamlessly, avoiding duplicates, saving your time. Unlike iTunes' own synchronization iPod.iTunes generally does not delete content in the target. iPod.iTunes can also transfer song dependend data like "My Rating", "Last Played", "Play Count", album artwork, etc...

* 8 synchronization modes in 2 directions (from iPod to iTunes and from iTunes to iPod).
* Simple one click synchronization (Screenshot (http://www.crispsofties.com/)).
* Option to choose songs manually if you don't want to synchronize them all. You can listen to songs before you choose to transfer them.
* Songs and playlist entries can be synchronized together or separately. If iPod songs are already in iTunes and you only want the iPod playlists, you can use the playlist synchronization alone.
* Supports Windows-formatted iPods.
* Supports MP3, AAC/MP4, Protected AAC (iTunes Music Store), Audible audio books, Podcasts, Apple Lossless, Video.
* Support for the iPod's "On The Go" playlist.
* Copies by default seamlessly to the iTunes music folder and creates a folder structure based on artist/album, as if you import CD's. with iTunes (with options).
* File naming based on song number and song name, as in iTunes.
* iPod.iTunes can run directly from the iPod, so it's always there when you need it.
* Registration is independent of the computer. You can just connect your iPod to any Mac without registering every machine.
* Universal Binary - runs native on Macs with Intel and PPC processors.
* With every song synchronization iPod.iTunes creates a date&time stamped playlist in iTunes containing the songs which were transferred. This gives the option to easily add those songs to existing playlists or to create new playlists from the transferred songs.

iPod.iTunes can be used to

* Keep songs, videos and playlists on different Macs and iPods up to date.
* Do a full restore of songs, videos and playlists from iPod - i.e. after a hard disk failure or if you buy a new Mac.
* Revert accident deletion of songs, videos and/or playlists in iTunes, if these are still on your iPod.
* Transfer an iTunes library from one Mac to another via the iPod.
* Synchronize to a "foreign" iPod (not linked/synced to your iTunes library) without deleting content on it or touching the link to it's home Mac.
* Synchronize to a linked/synced iPod without deleting content on the iPod as iTunes' synchronization does when content on the iPod is no longer in the iTunes library.
* Clone an iPod (see Help menu in iPod.iTunes).

Requirements
iPod.iTunes 3.4.3 supports:
- Mac OS 10.3.9 through 10.4.9 (click here if you have Mac OS X 10.2 - 10.3.8 (http://www.crispsofties.com/i.i/older_releases.html))
- An Apple Macintosh with an Intel or PPC processor (iPod.iTunes is an Universal Binary).
- iTunes 3.0.1 through 7.1.1
- Any Mac/PC-formatted iPod with all iPod firmwares released by Apple to date (the last iPod Software Updater was released within iTunes 7). Does currently not work with the iPod shuffle.
Download for Mac OS X 10.3.9 - 10.4.8 (http://www.crispsofties.com/i.i/ipod_itunes.dmg)

NOTE: See website for additional information.

Jaikoz (http://www.jthink.net/jaikoz) is a mp3 tagger, which you might like to try out, it has quite a few unusual features including:

It can analyse your mp3s acoustically and match against the MusicIP database, to fix your tags. It can also match using metadata from MusicBrainz 9 which is simialr to freeddb but much better) and it can also automatically retrieve artwork from Internet. There is a Find missing Tracks from Albums feature and a powerful Find And Replace feature that can be used to find and replace values in all/any field.

It available for OSX and Windows, and you get direct access to the developer meaning you can get good support and even get customizations done.

# 51 Re: Software Compendium
Poddox (http://www.poddox.com/) - iTunes Alternative software

PoddoX: The simplest and easiest way to copy your music to your iPod

* Poddox works much faster than Apple's software iTunes
* Poddox doesn’t use libraries like iTunes and alternative software
* Poddox allows easy file transfer to an iPod with Windows explorer context menu

* Poddox copies iPod data back to a PC or other iPods
* Poddox supports all audio formats supported by Apple's software iTunes
* Poddox only needs few 100 kB of storage space unlike iTunes and alternatives

PoddoX, the iTunes alternative
The software PoddoX is a fast and user friendly alternative to iTunes, Apple’s iPod software. With PoddoX you can easily copy your music, pictures and videos to your iPod. Poddox also helps you to organize the existing files on the iPod: delete them, copy them back to your computer or to any other storage medium. To this end, Poddox lists the content of your iPod clearly structured in a tree control. You can even copy files or hole folders from the Windows explorer to your iPod. This option is missing in iTunes. Other than iTunes or alternative software for iPod, PoddoX doesn't create or copy files to folders as long as you didn’t choose to do so.
Libraries

PoddoX doesn't work on the base of libraries like iTunes, but is operating on files and folder structures, thus interacting much faster with an iPod than iTunes. PoddoX is able to read, generate and extend iTunes databases that are updated or created according to the actual iTunes Version 7.1. and will be updated continuously.

Repair Tool
In case of a damaged iTunes database on your iPod, PoddoX is able to repair the database. Alternatively PoddoX offers the opportunity to search your iPod for files and restore them at any place with its full names. Folder- and filenames are fully adjustable within the restore routine.

Audio
Poddox reads and writes any kind of MP3 data (MPEG-1/2/2.5 - Layer 1/2/3) from and to your iPod. It calculates the exact duration, bit- and samplerate and reads other useful information of the single tracks. Metadata is read from ID3v1-Tags and ID3v2-Tags. In addition MPEG-4 audio data in M4A and M4B containers are supported. All relevant metadata (titel, artist, album ...) is read from the common Apple-Tag, used by iTunes and other encoders.

Photo, video, artwork and more...
Poddox’s development is at an early stage and by far not all aims are reached. The support of images, videos, artwork and other features is not completed yet. But PoddoX is growing fast: new versions with further tools will be released regularly. PoddoX becomes a real alternative to Apple’s iTunes.

Installation
PoddoX doesn’t need no installation. It consists of a single executable file that can be copied to your computer or your iPod. So no matter where you are and to which computer you are connected to, your software is always with you.
