Poor Transfer Speed
I've had my 3rd gen ipod 30G for 2 days now, and though it's a wonderfully well put together piece of hardware, i've had no end of problems getting mp3s onto it.
To cut a long story short, I gave up on MMJB (I was getting an IPOD full error whenever I tried to put either a large mp3 on it, or several at once) and went through the process of using ephpod instead.
I am using version 2.7 (have tried 2.6 also, no better) and although it's nice to be able to upload mp3s onto the ipod, the transfer rates are terrible (=> 500k/s).
I am using the firewire port on my Audigy 2 platinum Ex, which I have seen working with another ipod (2nd gen 20G) at 6M/s and above.
Is this purely a firewire problem or is there anything else I can consider?
Thanks in advance :)

# 1 Re: Poor Transfer Speed
I just got my new g3 ipod and i tried it at first on my audigy firewire connection, from the word go there was problems nothing seamed to work right. I managed to get 1 album across at about 2mb/s and most others crashed. I thought it could be a problem with the ipod its self. But my dad was able to get me a firewire card for ?12, so i bung that in and it worked perfectly straight away. I transfered 30 albums and a smove 7-8 mb/s with 0 problems now everything works great. I will never ever ever buy a 'creative' made product again. And yes i can set the firewire and sound card up correctly as i have built computers for a company before so i know what im doing (just for the some who may try and tell me i havnet set up the audigy correctly).
So my advise would be to try ur connection on someones elses firewire port or buy a new card first :D

Definitely ditch the Audigy. It's known as the worst card for the iPod.
Get a different card and all will be well...

I have a similar problem, but with my gen2 20gb connected through an adaptec fireconnect cardbus card. i only get 1.5ish mb/s transfer.
Anyone have tips on how to make it go faster?
# 4 Re: Poor Transfer Speed
That is awfully slow for the adaptec. Are you using ephpod to transfer? There is a setting on the Configure Ephod menu (Advanced tab) where you can set the max buffer size. Bump it up to 4096)
Don't use Windows copy routines.

# 5 Re: Poor Transfer Speed
I already have it on 4096 and everything. I am very dissapointed with the card (PCMCIA card if it makes a difference), and EphPod still only gives 1-1.5mb/s transfer. I Use windows xp pro, have 384mb ram and enough of everything i beleve. Still cant figure out why it is so slow through firewire.
thanks for your try tho.
# 6 Re: Poor Transfer Speed
You may want to check out what kind of transfer rates the drive *inside* your laptop can achieve. The iPod is only but one link in the chain.
We really can't expect much from the small drives inside laptops and iPods, but 500K is pretty slow.

# 7 Re: Poor Transfer Speed
After trying just about everything I could think of, I reinstalled the VIA PCI latency patch (http://www.georgebreese.com/net/software/) on this machine (hadn't bothered before for some reason) and all is well. Back up to 6.5-7.5MB/s transfers within ephpod and no other issues. :)
If you are using a VIA KT133 (or any VIA) chipset, use a creative sound card and have any kind of problem with crackling and/or slow transfer rates through firewire/USB/hard drive I HIGHLY recommend this patch, it fixes all of these kinds of problems.
# 8 Re: Poor Transfer Speed
Also check bios settings. I have set PCI DELAY TRANSACTION to ENABLED and PCI LATENCY TIMER to 248.
I have iPod 30 GB, audigy 1 and KT266a chipset. My transfer rate is about 10 MB/s.

I'm so glad I don't have a VIA based motherboard anymore. That sound crackling mess really stunk!

# 10 Re: Poor Transfer Speed
Now all I have to do is figure out how to get my European iPod up to US volume levels and I'll be sorted
# 11 Re: Poor Transfer Speed
well just looked, its not my hd, its a 7400rpm disk, and i get great transfer from a digital camera trhough my firewire card (adaptec notebook fireconnect card).
I know its most likely not the ipod, so i put my money on some settings. Does anyone know how to set it perfectly with this setup, ie for the best speed? Ive been told that my card is the best out there for notebooks, yet i still only get 1.5mb/s from my ipod with ephpod. Does another program run faster? If so which?
Thanks for your help.
# 12 Re: Poor Transfer Speed
My problem is this, my ipod transfer rate is only about 1-2 mb/s, averaging low 1mb/s. I have heard of some people getting close to 10.
My config is as follows:
=20gb gen 2 ipod
=Dell Inspiron 2650, 30gb hd
= Adaptec fireconnect pcmcia card (which i hear is the best out there)
=tried both powered through firewire and not
=ephpod 2.6 f
Any ideas? Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated
btw, my transfer settings are for internal, and 4096.

Just use the american updater and it will replace the bios with a non-nanny version :) The bios revision is .1 lower but I don't believe that there is any additional functionality to the euro version.
1st thing I did :)

Does this work with 3rd gen ipods also?
If so could you possibly post linkage to this bios update/downdate (!)
thx

@welshie
Not sure, mine is a 10Gig touchwheel model.
I can't see why it wouldn't work but from what I understand of the new updater you would have to do a restore which will destroy any songs on the ipod.
Perhaps someone else can confirm.
The updater should be downloaded from the Apple site. That way if it went wrong you would have plausible deniability ;)

# 16 Re: Poor Transfer Speed
i just fixed my transfer speeds, it used to be 2 megs MAX and now its 8
the problem was that my mp3s were on my old 40 gig deskstar 75gxp (Deathstar)
i copied them to my 120 gb WD 8 meg cache and now its 8 megabytes and my comptuer doesnt lag while uploading
i also changed ipod to 'optimize for performance'

# 17 Re: Poor Transfer Speed
HOw did you do that?
# 18 Re: Poor Transfer Speed
I am using an Audigy 1 card for my firewire port and vPod and I am currently transfering at 11.2MB/s if vPOD is to be believed.

# 19 Re: Poor Transfer Speed
In the device control panel under disk drives, you should see the ipod. Right click and choose properties. On the policies tab you can choose optimize for performance which enables caching. Beware, you will now need to let Windows know when you are disconnecting the hardware, as it needs to release the disk cache. I have just tried changing this setting. I don't know if it will affect my transfer rates.
# 20 Re: Poor Transfer Speed
OK I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this. but here's the fix.
====
OK I figured out why it's slow now. It has to do with the 2 "Copy Routine" options:
1. Use Windows API Copy Routines (FAST TRANSFER)
2. Use Internal Copy Routines
This option requests the Internal Copying Buffer Size. The higher the buffer size, the slower the transfer. When I set it to 128 kb, it goes fast.
Can someone explain what these options are and what effect they have on transfer speed? Thanks.

I still don't understand why LOWER caches allows for faster speeds. When its bumped ot the highest, it transfers super slow. Cna someone explain?
