1.3 When????

Somewhat new to Apple products. How good are they at coming close to their proposed release dates? I would really like 1.3, as it is supposed to allow me to use my gen2 Ipod with Audible.com

I drive a lot and listen to audio books. My old mp3 player was replace with the Ipod in the hopes of expanding capacity. Up to now, no such luck :(

I can listen to Audible file on my 2nd Gen Winipod. I'm using 1.2.6

Just download Tyoe 4 from Audible and use ephpod to transfer files.

Version 1.3 is already available. But it's only for the first and second generation iPods. If you have a 3rd generation model (the slimmer model with touch sensitive buttons), then it already came with the latest update, which is version 2.0.

Where is a legal version of 1.3 for the 2nd Gen?? I know there is a hacked version but I want the real deal.

Sorry for getting your hopes up. I guess you're using an iPod for Windows. You're correct, the latest version I see on Apple's site is 1.2.6.

Ok, I installed the hack version of 1.3. I tried installing audible files to the Ipod using ephpod, both with 1.26 and 1.3 updates on the Ipod.

The audible file is on the Ipod, but does not play. I tried to activate the Ipod in the Audible Manager program, but it states that it cannot find the Ipod.

Anyone that has had success with gen2 Ipods and Audible.com, what is the secret???

I just copied it over. Are you using file format 4 from Audible?

Forget the Audible manager I didnt use that

# 9 Re: 1.3 When????
Yes, I used Ephpod to transfer the audible file. It shows on the Ipod, but when selected, nothing happens. The screen continues to show the title of the audible file. No audio.

# 11 Re: 1.3 When????
Tygh, here's the deal.

First you need to restore your iPod back to 1.26. The hack version of 1.3 comes from the Mac version and does nothing to help you on a PC version.

Second, Use Ephpod 2.60f to transfer your Audible files. I also suggest using EphPod to handle your music as this will simplify things a lot.

Make sure that you do not open MMJB. There is a bug in MMJB 7 that will cause your Audible files not to play. They will appear on the iPod but they will not play. Could that be what happened to you? (BTW, there is a fix.)

What other software are you using besides EphPod?

Anyway, Windows iPod w/1.26 will definately work, and its really easy, once you get through the kinks. Let me know if you get it working or have any other questions. I've experimented with just about every combination of things with iPod / Audible so hopefully I can help you.

I hope this doesn't confuse the issue further, but I am using the mac-derived winniepod 1.3 updater and it works perfectly with my audible files. It may be best as paranoyya says to revert back to 1.2.6 to get audible to work before updating to 1.3, but 1.3 does not seem to be affecting my files at all. I had the same basic problem when I first started with audible and with a single response their email support led me through a simple process to get it working. I wish I had saved that email so I could forward it along to you. You might want to contact them...they were very responsive at that time anyway. Good luck!:)

here is where you can find the updater:

http://www.the-midfield.com/ipod.aspx

I don't know if I could really recommend it though. I really doesn't add much...just a backlight option and supposedly mp4 and aac support, neither of which I use. It doesn't seem to hurt anything though, and maybe it even fixes a few bugs we don't know about.

Rumor from Byron Hinson on ActiveWin.com is the 1.3 updater is due on Monday, possibly along with the 2.0.1 for the Ipod 2's. I guess I'll believe it when I see it....

What besides the Audible support will actually be in the 1.3 software?

Is Apple ever going to give features like "on the fly playlists" or customizable menus that are part of the 2.0 software for 3rd gens for those of us with older models?

I guess the Monday date was cr*p too...

# 23 Re: 1.3 When????
I don't see how hard it can be to get a 1.3 version for windows out. They've had several months and have kept extending the date...this can't be helping them much, it's only getting people annoyed.
Boxster17 at 2007-11-15 17:45:00 >
# 24 Re: 1.3 When????
You're right, Boxster, especially since I installed the extracted Mac version about 2 weeks ago and it works fine. If someone out here can do it so easily, why can't the professionals at Apple?
Is it a ploy to get us to buy the new version?

Not likely for me to do that...it was a splurge to buy the one I have...I'm not about to buy another one so soon just for a few new features that should be able to be done with a firmware update.

Steve has enough of my money for now...

Apple is kindof slow on this... it has been "soon" for a very long time now. :(

ahh, i'll wait for the legit version of the software.

# 27 Re: 1.3 When????
I guess they won't bring it out until they have itunes out for windows...

That way they can get us all buying songs off em after the terrific customer support we've been enjoying!!

Maybe they'll just skip 1.3 for windows and just release 1.4 with the features of 2.0.1 for newer pods?! (yeah right dream on!!)

# 28 Re: 1.3 When????
Its preposterous, outrageous and downright disgraceful!

I purchase my iPod based on the stated promise from Apple that the 1.3 update would be available in early May.

I'm giving them a few more days and if they don't deliver the update, I am going to exchange mine for a new one under warrant of merchantibility that requires a product must perform its intended purpose.

I've been very patient but it has run out.

No offense, but the iPod IS performing it's stated purpose. What is it in version that you simply have to have now? It certainly can't be AAC because that wouldn't work correctly even if you did have the firmware update.

AAC (in an mp4 container) works fine on a win-pod if you use the hacked 1.3 update. It would be nice to have an apple-authorized version
richard at 2007-11-15 17:53:10 >
# 32 Re: 1.3 When????
AAC does not work fine, because you can not properly tag the files, unless you use Sveta, and it isn't really a great program, yet.
EphPOD, xPlay, and MC9 still can't update the database so AAC still isn't really a choice for Windows users.

# 33 Re: 1.3 When????
At this point, SouthSide, it's the principle...

"Early May"...now it's "available soon"...

Give me a break Apple...is it really that difficult??
jimlat at 2007-11-15 17:55:15 >
# 34 Re: 1.3 When????
Is it difficult to port iTunes to Windows? Yes. C'mon, again there is to real way to use AAC with a Windows iPod, unless you use Sveta, which isn't particularly great. In the mean time there is a bunch of programmers in Apple who are spending many hours writing code, so that they can get a Windows version of iTunes out by the end of the year. This has everything to do with principle. Apple is going to get a program out that will encode in AAC for Windows when they get the program completed, and iTunes for Windows will hopefully be as good as it is for the Mac.

I'm sorry that you expect Apple to add functionality to Windows iPods that barely works, but they don't have a responsibility to do it. If MC9 was handling AAC then I might be on you side, but it isn't. AAC is still in it's infancy on Windows and will be for quite awhile yet.

# 35 Re: 1.3 When????
When did this become just about AAC?

I thought we were looking for other improvements, on the fly playlists, etc.
Rygel at 2007-11-15 17:57:16 >
# 36 Re: 1.3 When????
Well, it's about AAC because Apple has stated that AAC support was on it's way for gen2 ipods.

Apple never stated anything about OTG or the other features. I have a gen3, and although IMHO Apple ought to make OTG available for gen2's if it can do so reasonably, I don't agree that they are obligated to do so--it's a nice gesture, probably in the long run be a good business decision to make OTG available, but not an obligation...

# 37 Re: 1.3 When????
No offense taken, Irish. I'll assume you are unaware of the following issue.

1.26 iPods have a bug that related to handling Audible (.aa) files. Apple promised the already long delayed PC version of 1.3 firmware to be released in "early May". This update was to include a fix for this problem. Its now mid-June.

I bought an iPod on the basis that Audible support was coming soon." I would not have bought an iPod except on the word that it would be upgradeable to support Audible, as that is my primary use.

When I bought my 10gig, Apple had not even mentioned their music store and their new AAC music format. So I couldn't care less about that. And I don't feel they have any "obligation" to offer any of the NEW features to the Gen 1/2 ipods.

But I certainly think fixing the bugs related to Audible that have been existent since the beginning, and which Apple has said they were working on the fix is a reasonable thing to expect.

# 38 Re: 1.3 When????
Well, there is always that other source for the firmware. It works great and I haven't had problems using any of the 1.3 features. I know the moral issues about using, but like you I just don't want to have to wait till the end of the year to get it.

BTW in the 17 months that I have owned, and had to hack this pod I have never had any problems getting support from my Apple Store, and they knew how I was using it. I guess I have done every thing I could to void my warranty, did void it, and the guys there still supported me.

# 39 Re: 1.3 When????
AAC is an absolutely useless format for the iPod to support. It's not even open-source for crying out loud.

I wonder why Apple couldnt have taken the easier, and in the long run better way by supporting OGG. Quality is exceptional, far better than mp3 and AAC using equal BR(s), file sizes are much smaller AND its open-source. 3 Reasons right off the bat. I bet 80% of windows users havent even considered ripping their music to AAC, or have even heard of it. why would they?

Oh well. The update will be useless for me, and a number of other iPod owners who dont care for shabby formats like the mpeg-4 (AAC) in question.

Thank-you so much Apple, i shell out 700$ CDN, to find my hard earned money being put into a product, that is being abandoned. Not even 1 year after purchase - lack of updates, accesories, compatibility, etc, etc, etc.

btw, who really wants to put some edited 1.3 software on their iPods anyways? Guess its good bragging rights, to say you have it before 90% of users do. Quite frankly, i would be just fine without the last update ever for the Windows gen1/2 iPods.

Not sure if this was posted elsewhere, but the 1.3 download page no longer mentions "(Windows version coming soon)".

The only link on the page is for the Mac version of the download.

Did I miss something or is it now available somewhere else?

There won't be a 1.3 version for Windows until iTunes for Windows comes out, and if it doesn't well then there won't be any more updates for Gen1/2 pods.
