Ephpod will not change genre

I have switched from Musicmatch to Ephod. The genre of much of my music was lost in the change. When I try to change it in the Ephpod song view, it changes back to nothing on the next sync. If I open the song in Musicmatch or Windows Media Player, it shows the correct genre. When I look at the song properties, it has the right genre. What's going on with Ephpod?

You need to edit the tags on the PC not on the IPod.

Ephpod only manipulates the copy on the IPod not the copy on the PC.

There are many free programs available to manipulate the tags. V2 tags are better!

My issue is that the tags are correct on the computer but not in Ephpod, and no amount of editing changes that.

Try checking the "attempt to read id3v2 tags" checkbox in the configuration options.

You haven't said which version of the tags are correct on your computer.

If the V2 tags are correct you will want to check this option.
If the V1 tags are correct you will want to uncheck this option OR copy the V1 tags to V2

I'm sorry, I don't know the difference. I tried it with the "attempt to read id3v2 tags" box both checked and unchecked and it came out the same way both times. All of my music was recorded with Musicmatch Jukebox, and some songs from the same CD have tags in Ephpod & some don't. When I view them in Musicmatch Jukebox, the genres are there, and when I look at the properties of the song, the genre is there. It's only in Ephpod that it is screwed up. How can I tell the difference between v1 & v2 or copy them? Thanks for your patience.

Try id3-tagIT.

You can get the program from www.id3-tagit.de.

I found the interface a little obscure but it's pretty powerful.

Select the directory you are interested in (it will scan subdirs). In the window you can see all of the fields in the tags, there is a button at the top right to switch from viewing V1 to V2.

If the other data you are interested in is available in the tags already and you just want to add a genre use the "Multiple Edit Tags" option.

You hightlight the files you want to change (Use Shift + Down-arrow) then right click the highlight and select "Mutiple Edit Tag V2"

Select the Genre you want from the drop down list and press the Plus symbol. Ensure the checkbox to the right is checked and OK the change.

To write the change to the files you have to save, that is the Diskette icon on the toolbar...

If you want to add new genres there is an option to add new ones to the V2 tags.

There is also an option to transfer V1 tags to V2 in the Tools menu.

It's pretty powerful though it took me a while to get used to the interface.

I think most people prefer V2 tags for the IPod though I'm happy enough if it get's the genre, song title and artist right :)

You can navigate through the directories in the left pane which would allow you to add album names and artist names to groups of tracks.

Remember you have to save for the data to be written to the tracks...

I've recreated Kurt's "Software Compendium" here ( http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=13541#post13541) in the Windows Software section.

Made it a sticky too. ID3-tagit gets its rightful mention there...
