Song transfer from Windows iPod to OS X

I want to transfer music files from my friend's Windows-formatted iPod to my iBook HD (newer dual-usb model running OS X 10.2.6). I've been reading the forums but so far I haven't found a concise answer as to how to do this in the safest, most efficient way. I know that my Mac should recognize the Windows iPod as a firewire hard disk, but I'm afraid that iTunes might try to reformat it and wipe out all the songs. I know there is software available for download that will rip songs to OS X but I don't know if this software works with a Windows-formatted iPod.

Could someone please post a step-by-step guide or provide a link if one already exists?

Thanks for any help you can give - FG :)

Make sure that your version of iTunes is set to update the iPod manually. DON'T let it reformat the iPod or you'll lose everything.

Getting the music from the WiniPod to your Mac is going to require third party software like iPod.iTunes or one of the others that are in the Downloads section on the front page of iPodlounge.
