Can it be ? My windows formatted ipod works with my new mac itunes?

Hey there,

I am COMPLETLY New to Mac stuff so forgive my questions if they seem stupid.

I bought an ipod a couple of months ago and I love it. I had a pc (that has just been replaced by an iMac) So I was updating the software and playing around trying to become familiar with it, updating itunes and without formatting anything plugged in my ipod. I noticed several things...

1. That I could wipe it clean and start over adding songs from the itunes library.
2. That if I add songs to the old list they seem to go in just fine... However the ipod seems to get hot to the touch if I leave it in the dock.

So my questions are these..

1. Do I HAVE to reformat it or can I just keep adding songs to my old list manually..
2. Will I ruin the ipod if I use the dock without reformatting it ?
3. Is there anything I should know about this type of conversion that no one has told me ?

Thanks in advance

OK, here goes:

Your iPod is getting hot because it's still mounted. There's a little eject button on the lower right corner of iTunes that will eject it to stop the spinning of the HD. It will still charge, but won't get hot.

Reformat it to a Mac iPod. You won't be sorry. It works faster and better. Make sure you have all your songs saved in iTunes before you reformat because it's going to wipe them all out. Failing to reformat won't kill the iPod or the dock, but you'll be happier in the long run if you just go ahead and reformat.

Good luck and welcome to the iPodlounge!

If you're not going to be using it with a PC, I'd suggest reformatting it to Mac format as well. There are certain features only enabled on Mac iPods (stuff having to do with play counts and ratings and smart playlists) you may want to take advantage of.

The iPod does mount on the mac, right? You could download Audion (http://www.panic.com) which allows you to drag and drop files from your iPod playlists into iTunes, effectively copying them to your computer, if iTunes is set up to automatically copy files to your library folder. Works like a charm on a Mac-formatted iPod. There are other ways to get the tunes off of the iPod, if Audion doesn't work... Mostly you have to buy or download third-party apps. Go to versiontracker: http://www.versiontracker.com and search for "iPod." There should be a number of shareware and freeware apps to choose from that do this. Audion is just the simplest as it reads the playlists and allows for direct drag and drop into iTunes.

Jeanette-
As for your question-
You cannot save songs on a windows iPod from a Mac. You can listen to files and access them on a Mac, but not manipulate/add files. For that you need to convert to a MacPod. If you're worried about losing your files, transfer your music folder from your PC to your Mac (using iPod as a HDD). You can then drag the folder into iTunes.
