Problem syncing with iTunes

I have a 2G 20gb Mac iPod, latest OS. I add lots of tracks to iTunes, have my iPod set to sync automatically, connect the iPod to the firewire port and about 3-4 songs sync then I get the spinning beachball, it won't do anything until I disconnect the iPod. Any help?

Things to try:Restore the firmware on your iPod.
Test your firewire ports/cables - do other firewire devices work okay?
Set the iPod to be updated manually and see if you can transfer music that way.
