30GB iPod occasionally just freaks out

I recently upgraded from my 10GB scroll to a 30GB touchwheel, which I love... but I have this occasional problem.

Once in a while in shuffle songs mode (usually while playing one of my own playlists), the pod will start (for lack of a better term) freaking out. First thing I notice is that tracks start skipping; when I look at the unit, I see that it's behaving like I'm going crazy with the scroll and menu button, back and forth, up and down, skipping songs and playing other lists at random. I can hear and feel the drive humming conspicuously when this happens. Eventually, I just have to try and get the thing to shut down or reset to make it stop.

There doesn't seem to be a pattern as to when this occurs, as far as I can tell. Previously, I just figured that maybe I did something to the scoll by accident without locking the unit before putting it in my pocket or in the case, but just now it did it while innocently sitting on top of my desk. This has happened maybe 3 times in the 4 weeks I've had it.

Anyone else had this problem?

You most likely have an electrical intermittent. Somewhere there is a bit of salt or other residue allowing a signal to leak between two traces. Take it back for replacement.

So you're saying that some particulate matter is in there somewhere, intermittently creating contact and scrambling the circuit?

Bummer.

In the event that I decide to take it in for a new one, do you have any idea if Apple would be able/willing to either swap the drives or move my data over to the new drive? I manage my songs manually, and I have more music on this ipod than I have room for on my mac's hard drive... It's (mostly) stuff I own and ripped myself -- I'd just hate to spend all those evenings doing it all over again.

But... I suppose it would be worth it to get a more solid unit (assuming it is more solid).

Thanks for the reply.

I had to replace my 20 GB iPod about two weeks ago. Mine took ESD (electrostatic discharge) damage and the audio out circuitry was fried. Head over to your local Apple Store and they'll replace it for free if its been less than six months since you bought it. They charged me $20 since mine was about nine months old.

You'll have to backup the data on the iPod yourself, if possible. Apple won't attempt to save your files, unless you're willing to pay a hefty fee for that service. Hopefully you have all your tunes on a hard drive on your computer.
