Saturday I bought a 30gb iPod and it lasted until Sunday night. Monday I took it back to my Apple store for a replacement. My replacement didn't even last 24 hours. I loaded it up and took off the dock and left it on my desk. When I finished my work for the day, I picked up the iPod to enjoy a little music. It is dead. As a door nail (whatever that means). I can't get it to start up and putting in the dock does absolutely nothing. A $500 paperweight. Anybody else encounter serial defecetive products?

I've noticed that this is a pervasive problem. I'm going to merge all the threads about this problem into this one, so users can have a centralized place to discuss this.
# 3 Re: MY v2.0 iPOD WONT TURN ON!
Well, I'm going to answer my own question with this response.. I took my iPod down to the Apple Soho store and they were able to reboot it for me without plugging it in.. My own fault for reading the manual I guess, which said to dock it before rebooting. So it works again, but it is still refusing to power-on instantly after leaving it all night on the dock or sometimes after sleeping it during the day. It has to go through the reboot process before it will come back on.
Also a side note.. the Apple store people told me that the new iPod isn't supposed to work with OS 9 at all, but lo and behold it seems to work pretty well, except that it won't always respond when I try to sync it with iTunes repeatedly, and I need to reboot the Mac.

By reseting the iPod holding down menu Play/pause u dont always need it connected this is just so u canbe shure the iPod got power. I had the same problem with my 30 gig when i got it i just made a reset and restore on it and it worked fine after that

I don't see my "Dead 30GB? (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1708) thread linked or mentioned so I'll add it to the fray. I'm using it on Mac OSX with the latest iTunes but that's irrelevant since the darn thing won't turn on.
I've done docking and not docking, I've done the reboot procedure (which I'd already learned since I'd had a freeze up several times before as well as the unit acting like it was playing music after being in "Hold" mode, but no sound coming through the headphones). iPod just plain isn't working. It's getting returned if it doesn't work after midnight, which for some reason some folks are saying is a critical 24 hr window. Shrug. Paperweight.... I miss my 20GB (which I sold on eBay and which arrived at the buyer's door the same day my 30GB ceased to turn on.)
Caveat emptor... firmware has LOTS more issues than just that piddly little click between tracks (which I wouldn't have even noticed were it not for all the posts about it everywhere). Not turning on...that's a whole nother ballgame.
# 6 Re: MY v2.0 iPOD WONT TURN ON!
See linked thread I posted earlier for a followup. My 30GB iPod just emerged from its self-induced 14 hour coma with no apparent ill effects.
Firmware update is definitely in order, shall we say?
# 7 Re: MY v2.0 iPOD WONT TURN ON!
i bought mine saturday. i've had to reset it numerous times, as it doesn't seem to like to come out of sleep mode...no big deal, except that if you're away from a power source (dock, FW cable, etc.), you CAN'T reset it, so basically until you get home, you're stuck with a $500 paperweight.
not sure if i'm on crack or something, but mine never seems to charge completely...
i bought it saturday, let it charge all afternoon (MUCH longer than the 4 hours stated in the manual for a full charge), and the charging indicator showed it was still charging. finally, i got tired of waiting to play with my new toy, so i removed it from the dock. the battery indicator was full, but lost the first bar after only a few minutes, and indicated it was down to 1/2 in a matter of an hour.
i left it on the charger all afternoon yesterday, and all night...it was still indicating it was charging this morning. within minutes of using it in the car this morning, the battery was down to 3/4 full.
and mine seems to have the older "white" screen, with the lousy/grainy contrast. no big deal, but i was looking for a 3rd strike... ;)
so should i run it back to the apple store? they can't give me a bunch of crap about it, right? grr.
(other than that, i love it...no more toting a binder of 100+ CD-R's in the car with me at all times to make sure i get my reccommended daily allowance of rock, but for $500, i'm a bit peeved...)
# 8 Re: MY v2.0 iPOD WONT TURN ON!
Mine wouldn't turn on again... and I was at work, so I can relate to the "not near power, so all it is is a paperweight" feeling. Supposedly new firmware may be out in the next day or so. Let's hope it addresses these severe issues.
# 9 Re: MY v2.0 iPOD WONT TURN ON!
Returned my iPod today. Now have to wait until July for a replacement to arrive, unless Apple cranks out a lot more of these a lot faster (without the glitches and failure to turn on, please).

Why are you using os9?
# 11 Re: MY v2.0 iPOD WONT TURN ON!
I have my reasons for using OS 9.. namely financial. I can't afford to upgrade to a G4 right now (let alone a G5) and I've already tried running OS X on my G3 with disappointing results. Also, I have a scanner and CD burner that don't have OS X drivers. So without laying out a hefty sum of cash right now, I'm forced to stick with OS 9 a little longer.

# 12 Re: MY v2.0 iPOD WONT TURN ON!
I have had my 30GB iPOD for 3 months and it started acting up from the get go... Sometimes it didn't mount on the desktop, no response when pressing buttons, etc............Reset the #### thing 30+ times...
Now it starts up, and shows the Apple, and goes to a dark screen, kinda like a screen that has the contrast turned down too low... All BLACK... I can hear the "clicks" when I press the buttons, but no sound... I turned it in to the store and they assured me that I have a replacement coming...TAP's are a great idea... I am simply amazed that this thing only lasted 3 months... My 20GB was a trooper compared to the new model. (11 months)
I am kind to my toys, and when they cost 1/4 the amount of a CPU, I have to say I expect them to be a little more robust...
# 13 Re: MY v2.0 iPOD WONT TURN ON!
i'm all about getting the lastest and greatest stuff, but i'll stay with my 1st gen 10gb ipod. it only runs the oldest of firmware, and i only upgraded to 1.3 so i could use the music store. now, i have to leave it plugged in all the time so the stupid clock app won't drain the battery over two days of sitting idle. seems that an mp3 player can't be only just that anymore. why has the ipod firmware gone downhill ever since the first version was introduced? someone once said "the more they overtake the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain." is this true with the ipod?

# 14 Re: MY v2.0 iPOD WONT TURN ON!
My new 40GB Ipod worked out of the box, I charged it, plugged it into my PC, and ran the software.
Now all I get is the black apple on the screen, but it won't do anything else.
My PC prompts me to connect the Ipod, when it is already plugged in.
I have tried the 'menu + pause' reset, and that makes the apple on the screen flash off then back on. But it still doesn't work.
Pushing the buttons don't make it work.
Has running the new software knackered my new toy?
Any help appreciated.
Can't get down to an Apple dealer either as I'm now in Baghdad.
Can download any software patches or whatever is necessary from the web.
Cheers
Brian

It's completely unresponsive??
# 16 Re: MY v2.0 iPOD WONT TURN ON!
I too just bought a new 40GB Ipod but it doesn't appear to be working out of the box. I've charged it prior to plugging it into my powerbook, I've loaded the ipod updater software onto my machine but it doesn't recognize that I have the ipod connected to the powerbook to so that I can restore. In fact ipod doesn't show up anywhere (itunes/finder/desktop). I can get the black apple on the screen if I reset it, but once it disappears, it won't do anything else. I can also put it in disk mode but it still won't show up anywhere on my powerbook.
# 17 Re: MY v2.0 iPOD WONT TURN ON!
Okay... Here's my problem... (Please help. I don't want to be forced to buy a new ipod)...
ipod 3rd Gen 10GB
My ipod won't turn on. When I plug it into my computer, my computer doesn't see it. I've tried plugging it into the wall and resetting it by toggling the hold switch and holding menu and play at the same time. When I do this the ipod makes an audible "click" that you can hear from the ipod itself (not through the headphones), and a 1 pixel line goes across the screen. But that's it.
I've tried holding menu and select, but that doesn't do anything. I've tried leaving it unplugged for days, then plugging it into the wall, but nothing changes, it continues to act the same. I've tried a different cable, but that doesn't work. I've tried using disk utilitity and the ipod updating utility, but neither of them see the ipod when plugged into my computer.
This is driving me crazy. I don't think it could be my battery... But I don't know what it could be...
Please help!
# 18 Re: MY v2.0 iPOD WONT TURN ON!
I have a 3rd gen 30gb iPod. Ever since the last update (when they released the latest iTunes) my iPod won't wake after being left in my "donut" speakers (JBL in think) for a couple days without being used. This is a powered device so it should be fully charged. It's happened about 3-4 times now. I've had to restore the ipod to get it to work (which is a pain since I lose all my stuff), but this last time I tried this:
1 - hold menu and play for 5 seconds to reset
2 - when it starts to reset, hold back, forward, and the center circle select
this brings up a menu that lets you test the hd, memory, and reset. I selected reset (option "b") and now it works.

So how do you fix this problem if your ipod does not switch on?

Me too, i bought my 5Gen ipod video months ago but after having the latest update on apple site, my ipod shows only a light up blank screen. I've tried everything that is stated on apple website still doesn't work. Now i can use my ipod as a torch light...sigh

I tried that but it still won't turn on i also let it charge for 8 hours cause i though it might be the battery... i also tried holding down the menu and middle button at the same time and it still won't turn on
