iApps crash with iPod
I have a Mac 15GB iPod (3G) and in the beginning all was well. Until iTunes started to crash when updating my iPod. I could still make it update if I did it in a certain order. Now nothing will make it update, it just crashes unexpectedly. And iSync is starting to show the same signs now. I use the latest versions (iTunes 4.0.1, iSync 1.1, iPod 2.0.1). I also posted at Apple Discussions but no-one there answers. I hope anyone here might know what I could try.
I haven't tried erasing the iPod since I have music on it now, and if it still does not function afterwards I would have no music.
Also not resetting, might that help?

The forum members need more info to help you, such as:
Operating system (10.2.6)
Type of computer
Version of iTunes
etc.
I am sure you will get some help if you give more particulars.

Sounds like an iSync problem. Try setting your iPod to be manually update, and see if you still experience crashes.
# 4 Re: iApps crash with iPod
iTunes: When I switch the iPod over to manual update the iTunes no longer crashes. When I switch it back to automatic update (of selected playlists) it crashes again. So I will leave it on manual update. I don't think playcounts get updated though this way and it sure is less quick&easy to do it manually. I hope Apple fixes this with an update.
iSync: I tried syncing and it worked without a crash. Maybe manual fixed iSync too. Or maybe it was a one-day crash mood of iSync. Or... I don't know.
Bottom line, you'd expect less buggy products from Apple.
Thanks for the help.

Well, before you give up on auto -syncing, I'd try two things:
De-installing and then re-installing iSync, and also restoring the iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's contents, but it'll give you fresh firmware and a fresh iPod database file.

I restored the iPod. No go. Still same problems.
I phoned AppleCare to use my 90-day free phone support which doesn't seem to apply to the iPod for some reason. After finding out that product registration with Apple is completely useless since you have to reregister with AppleCare I was finally allowed to tell hi what my problem is. After 3 words he starts a 30 min explanation of the Apple repair program procedure. After I asked him about 3 times if he simply assumes the iPod is broken he finally says yes. He did not try for 1 second to solve my problem. Something not working? Must be faulty hardware. How does that help me? I got more service from Apple South Africa in the dark mid-90's then from Apple belgium, or Apple netherlands, or Apple Europe, or wherever the hell they switched me to. So now I will have to continue to solve the problem myself since Apple is completely useless. And I am not going to send off my brand new iPod just like that, who knows what it will look like when/if I get it back... And no, I am not a recent switch user, I have been using mac's for 11 years and everytime I have to deal with Apple directly they just #### me off more. Go Apple! :/

Yeah, Apple doesn't offer AppleCare support for iPods, unfortunately. You may need to send your iPod off for repair though. I had to send mine off right out of the box - boy was I annoyed. But Apple took good care of it - they sent a special padded box for me to mail it in, and I had it back 3 days after I sent it in. 'Course I live in the U.S., and at the time I lived accross the San Francisco Bay from Cupertino. But still. That's pretty fast!
# 8 Re: iApps crash with iPod
well, I booted off another partition with another install of OS X, and the iPod updated fine. So it wasn't the iPod. So I phoned AppleCare again and told the guy I was pretty ####ed off about being brushed to the side like that. He apologized and offered a possible solution that's so simple I'm allmost too embaressed to say it... delete the iTunes prefs. Now it works fine again. But just imagine, that other guy would have let me send in my iPod for repairs while all I had to do to fix everything was delete the prefs :|.
Well, problem solved. Case closed. Thanks for replying.
