Ipod wont charge when mac is "asleep"

As the title says.... when my mac has been left alone for a few minutes and gone to sleep the ipod stops charging. I think it has only recently started behaving like this, perhaps since I updated to 2.0.1.
Dies anyone know why this might be and what i can do about it?
Thanks

Oh.. it's supposed to do that? That sucks, doesn't it... you can't just leave it to charge overnight.

jabberwock,
Twas brillig and the slithy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe.........

Ooops sorry ;) - if you want to charge your ipod overnight do what I do and leave it charging via the AC Adaptor - leaving it connected to your computer just for charging is risking overheating.

...all mimsy were the borogroves, and the mome wraths outgrabe.

Kaloo kalay, for real!

Thanks Madpict... looks like that's what I'll have to do. A bit of a bummer though as i'm so low on plug sockets. One of the reasons I've just switched from the darkside to Macs is to save on socket use... ho hum. Not at all fraptious if you ask me.

I'm glad to see I'm not going crazy... I couldn't figure out what was going on. Some mornings it was fully charged, some mornings it wasn't... Now I know. I've also noticed that if I put it to sleep it will actually drain the battery. I let it sleep for 12 hours and the batter was half gone. Does that match everyone else's experience?

Exactly the same setup and situation here. I've now set the imac to only go to sleep after 3 hours. The screen still goes off after 15mins or whatever but my ipod charges (for 3 hours at least).

Why does the iPod drain it's battery while the Mac is sleeping? This doesn't seem like a necessary feature.

I was pretty bummed when I went to listen to my iPod this morning and the battery was toast. I left it plugged into a sleeping iMac last night.

I'll take the advice about using the wall charger, but I like updating my iPod every night. Unplugging it, disconnecting the FireWire cable. then reconnecting it all to the wall is a little high maintenance for my taste (that's why I own a Mac!)

Enjoy the ride

Strange, I've got a 20gb 3g iPod with dock and 17" iMac, when i put the mac to sleep the pod keeps charging - seems that i'm the only one this works for!! Something to do with the dock perhaps?

My pod is always fully charged in the morning.
Can overcharging hurt it in anyway?

you can set your screen and disk to sleep independently of each other in the energy saver setting, but it will save both LCD and disk life if you sleep it whenever it's inactive, which is why i also prefer to use AC to charge, unless i'm working constantly on the iMac.

and you can't really overcharge the iPod - well not from what i've seen on the threads.

Hi all, new to iPodlounge.
Just wanted to say if I use the AC adapter i get about an hour from the pod (40GB) but if i use the Mac i get about 6 hours... oh and i am suffering from the sleep problem but i think mine is err well not goo at all as any sleep at all and the pod is flat, have to charge it up again (oh it is all upto date), I guess it is one of them things!

I had my iPod connected to my iBook and I shut the lid on it and the iPod kept charging, all night long and it said charged in the morning. It seemed to work for me.

And there ARE those of us who NEVER shut down a confuser. Most electronic thingies (non-battery powered) werk mo' better if they're left on.

As usual, my 2 cents worth! ;-).

yeah the wierd thing is I have the opposite problem, I never had a charging problem when I use the cradle but since I moved and haven't set the cradle up yet I've been charging with the AC and it doesn't seem to charge at all, it like sleeps immediately or something.

welcome to the lounge :)

so your cradle is connected to your mac and not the ac power brick? then it's probable that the power brick is faulty and you should get a replacement (for free if it's less than 12 months old)

I run it off a pc so sleeping shouldn't be an issue. The problem only seems to happen lately when I connect directly to the AC adapter

you checked the particular power socket in the wall is providing juice to other devices?

yup it works otherwise. but it's wierd I just reset it and it went from zero power bar in the battery to 2...strange...

it is one of those 'tips' that is suggested to people who think they have an issue with the battery to reset or restore the iPod to refresh the software and get the battery meter to respond a bit better.

no idea about why you can't seem to charge from ac though...!?

interesting, well it might be bad. I'll monitor it over the week and if nothing changes I'll start charging though the cradle and make a trip to the apple store.

Must be a function of the portable line. My Powerbook will also charge my ipod when the powerbook is asleep.
