3gen 10gig pod, freezing probs!

I apologize if some of these issues have been covered before but I don't know if I should try to exchange my ipod for a new one...just bought it three days ago.

- While choosing a song, sometimes I'll hit play and instead of playing, it'll jump back to the menu and I'll have to rechoose the song.

- While choosing, scrolling or playing, sometimes the ipod will freeze totally. I'll feel the harddrive start spinning, and after a bit (1-10 minutes) the pod will unfreeze and start playing, either on the song I chose or another album entirely.

Other than these issues I love this pod! It's already made my life better. Just don't know if these issues are along the lines of "normal" 3gen pod problems or not...the hard drive kicking in when the pod freezes is a little disconcerting.

Thanks!

Hey cowgirly - Welcome to iPodlounge! :)

As for the skipping of songs (i.e., jumping back to the menu when you select a song), iPod has been know to balk at playing songs that have bad data in the ID3 tags, so I'd check the tags of those songs it refuses to play. Sometimes even non-English characters in the tags will cause the iPod problems.

As for your freeze-ups, that sounds potentially more serious. The old iPods (i.e., Gen1 & 2) would sometimes freeze when being subjected to physical shock (most notoriously while jogging) when the HDD would try to spin up to refresh the iPod's 32 MB buffer. However, those freeze-ups were "permanent" and required a reset (press and hold in both the Play / Pause and the Menu buttons together until the Apple logo appears) to recover, as opposed to starting playing again minutes later. But, the Gen3 iPods employ a modified buffering scheme that supposedly makes this less of a problem.

Have you tried a reset when you experienced your freeze ups?

Also, what is the source of the MP3s you are having problems with? Did you rip them and encode them yourself? If not, you may have some corrupt MP3 files.

If the freeze ups / HDD spinning keep occuring, especially with verified "good" MP3 files, you might want to exchange it for another unit. Since it is only 3 days old, I would think you could return it to the place of purchase and exchange it for another brand new one.

Good luck, and let us know what happens!

The pod is working fine these days. I surfed around the boards and found the suggestion that after synching with iTunes, it might help to do a reset. The pod has not frozen at all since I've been doing this, so I assume it's working...

Great site, great boards, thanks for your help!
