can i remount without disconnecting?

i thought i saw the answer to this somewhere in this forum, but now that i need it, obviously, i can't find it. so, can i drag the icon for my iPod to the eject on the dock (running OS x.2.6 w/ ipod updater 2.0) and then remount it without having to unplug and plug back in the firewire?

also, is there a way to see the ipod's music files from the finder (or some 3rd party app)?

thankssssss

I've discovered two ways. The first is to quit and relaunch iTunes, which causes the iPod to remount. Secondly, initiating a sync within iSync will remount the iPod. Also, you can always plug and unplug either end of the dock/firewire cable.

There may be a more direct method which I haven't discovered.

Assuming you have a dock, just lift the iPod off of the dock, then stick it back in is another way.

EDIT: Also, check out this post in the old forums (http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=macgeneral&action=display&num=1031799713&start=0#3). iPodlounge Moderator eustacescrubb (John) wrote an Applescript to remount an ejected iPod. I thought I remembered that he had done that and was able to find the old post.

EDIT (Again): Hmmm, John's link in that old post is broken. John - do you still have that Applescript?

At any rate, there were some other ideas (terminal commands) in that old thread that you could try.

EDIT (Yet again - this is getting fun!): Here is a new link (http://johnpauldavis.org/archives/000204.html) to John's "Unmount and Mount iPod" Applescript.

i found that the applescript linked to above didn't work to well. If I remember rightly all it did was relaunch itunes.

You can also just press menu and pause play in the iPod to force a relaunch...at least in the windows world you can.

That works on the Mac as well.

I doubt it relaunches iTunes. The script doesn't do what a lot people think it does (mount an iPod that won't show up, or mount an iPod you've already ejected) - it does one specific thing: it will unmount an iPod already mounted, and then re-mount it. Trying to do anything else with it will lead to disappointment.

My bad then, John, for pointing sickandwrong to your Applescript. I suppose I misunderstood what it was designed to do as well! ;)

I like to use the dock, but sometimes, i don't use the computer with it... I unmount the iPod, but if I want it to come back, I would usually unplug it, and plug it back in. Then the iTunes would start, and my address book would follow... I use these programs a lot, but don't want them to come up some of the time... I have found a solution...

I simply put an old version of the iPod updater into the dock, and when i click on it, it mounts the iPod without any other program starting. This is useful if you only need the iPod for a short amount of time, and dont want to press ? + Q. Try it, it'll work!

Both of those links are dead now :(

Does anyone have the AppleScript?

Noodles,

Sorry about the dead links - my site's content management system crashed and took my site archives with it. Here's the new url: http://johnpauldavis.org/archives/unmount_and_mount_ipod.html

Additionally, since I don't know anyone with a new iPod and a Mac, I've never been able to test the script with a new (dock) iPod. I'm assuming that it oughtn't matter, but one never knows.
