Duplicate tracks on pod ! HELP
Hope someone out there can help me with this one.
Somehow I have duplicate listings on my iPod. This occurs under Artists and Genre. I have several entries listed in Artists and Genre 2 to 4 times, each entry contains the exact same music. I'm not sure how I did this. iTunes seems to be correct, no dupes are listed there. I'd like to get rid of the extra (duplicated) entries to free up space. Any ideas on this??
Thanx...

Hey edie - Welcome to iPodlounge! :)
Sounds like you have some corruption in the iPod's database. This database is updated by iTunes with the ID3 tag information from your MP3s when you copy music over to your iPod. And, it is used by the iPod's UI when you Browse, and is used to find the actual MP3s on your iPod's HDD when you select music to listen to.
The easiest thing to do would be to restore your iPod from the iPod Updater. This will format your iPod's HDD, install a fresh copy of the firmware, and create a new, empty database.
Then you wil need to re-copy all of your music from your Mac to your iPod (at FireWire speeds, this won't take too long! ;)). This will recreate all the entries in your iPod's database, eliminating the duplicates.
Please make sure you have all your music on your Mac before doing this, as all the music will be deleted off of your iPod.
If you do not want to do this (it's really not as bad as it sounds), you could switch your iPod to manual updating in iPod Preferences in iTunes (if it is not set to this already), and then try deleting each and every individual track that is duplicated, then re-copy just those tracks. But, depending on the nature of the database corruption, this might not remove the duplicates.
If you only have a few duplicates, you could try this first to see if it works. But if you have a lot of them, the restore and re-copy everything is really easier, and it will definitely clean up all the duplicates.

Check in iTunes to see if your mp3 tags are actually identical for the artist, genre, whatever for affected songs. For example, when I loaded a bunch of Mozart in, that generated several Mozarts in the artist list - because the tags listed him as Mozart, Mozart with dates, Wolfgang Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, W.A. Mozart (that was odd) and even Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus. Each one showed as an artist until I grouped them in a playlist, selected all, got info and changed the artist tag to one name.
