Question about multiple Macs...

Hello all. Quick question! :)

My new 30GB iPod is associated with my music library in iTunes on my home Mac. For the first time today, I brought my dock to work and hooked the bad boy up to my work iMac. I, of course, told it to NOT associate with this work iMac in oder to not lose my songs. I then went in and set the iPod options to manually manage music so that I could broke the iPod library on this work iMac.

Now, here's my question...if I make changes here at work (edit song tags, ratings, etc, and possibly even add songs), will those get synced back to my Mac at home when I get there this evening?

I guess what I'm asking is...does the syncing go both ways, or only from Mac --> iPod?

Thanks in advance!

Jeff

I know that nothing will go back from the Pod to the Mac on the 1st / 2nd generations, but I don't have enough experience with a 3rd gen to give you a definitive answer. I don't believe it will, though.

Argh. That's what I was afraid of. So what will happen now that I've made some tag changes on the iPod? When I sync with my Mac will the changes just get overwritten? Or will the remain on the ipod but not make it to the Mac?

Thanks so much!

I got to thinking abou this...there HAS to be some iPod -- > Mac syncing going on for the reatings and playcount, right? If you rate a song on your iPod, the Mac gets the new rating. Similarly, if you play a song on your iPod, the playcount on the Mac updates, too. I'm not sure if this would apply to other tags (Title, Artist, etc.) orr not, but there defenitly is SOME iPod --> Mac syncing going on.

I'll let you all know what happens when I get home.

Yes, playcounts on the 1st & 2nd gen as well as ratings on the 3rd will be syched, but actual changes to the songs themselves can only be made on the mac and iTunes related to the iPod. UNLESS it's different in 3rd gen! Sorry to be so uncertain. Guess I'll have to buy that 30G I've been wanting.

just reading this thread, and although it's only semi-related, i just wanted to clarify one thing.
If i take the iPod associated with my mac, went and plugged it into one at Uni, all my tracks would appear in the uni Mac's iTunes, and be able to be played through iTunes for the duration I have my iPod attached?

Nathan Adams:

Yes. Provided that the version of iTunes is compatible with the files on your iPod (i.e., if you have AAC files on your iPod, you'll need iTunes 4 or greater). And provided that your iPod is set to be updated manually.

well, i'll have it set to auto-sync on my home mac...
but from what i gather, i can set the uni mac to 'manual' the first time i plug the iPod in there - correct?

the itunes aac thing makes sense. i think the uni ones have itunes3, since they updated the design room last holidays just before the music event. most of my library is still mp3 anyway - only what i've ripped since 4 came out is in aac.

No. The setting to auto-sync is on the iPod itself, and iTunes will read the iPod's database when it's plugged in and auto-sync to the Mac in the computer lab, and you'll lose everything on your iPod.

oh, that sucks a bit
i would have thought it would realise it's not it's associated mac, and refuse to make any changes..
so moral of the story, if you auto-sync at home, don't even think about plugging in to another mac....

Or: just set it to manual before you leave, and then when you return home, lug it in and set it to auto-sync again.

I have two macs. I tried transferring my itunes library from my laptop to my desktop using my laptop as the target disk volume. That worked but it didn't transfer the song info, like my ratings. So, then I tried using the ipod as a hard drive, stored my itunes library on it, transferred that over to my desk top and again all the songs came over but no song ratings. Is there anyway to transfer that info from one mac to another? Will podworks do that? Looked for this info in forums but couldn't find it, thanks.

That may be true of the Gen 3s but it is NOT true on my Gen 1. The only way to turn AS on or off is in iTunes. Can anyone else confirm this?

Did you also copy the iTunes 4 Music Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml from one computer to the other?

Yes, I did copy those files. Still don't know why that didn't work but I ended up using ipodrip and that brought everything over for me, songs, ratings, all the info, great little program! Thanks.
