Gen3 iPod on Mac OS 9?

Is it possible to use a new Gen3 iPod with Mac OS 9 (the requirements state a minimum of 10.1.5)?

I would be interested in using the Contacts and syncing with iTunes; it is not necessary to support *all* new features (like AAC, or even firmware upgrades).

Has someone tried this out already?

I know I haven't, but I can tell you that you'll have trouble using Contacts - they may work, but syncing them to and from your iPod will take some doing.

Thanks for your answer; I am planning to sync the contacts manually anyway (they will be exported from a FileMaker database).
The only show stopper would by if iTunes 2 wouldn't recognize the new iPods at all.

I am using a Generation 3 iPod on OS 9.2.2

they said it wouldn't work, but it does - although there are some limitations.
First, here's my setup:

Powermac G4 350 tower
OS 9.2.2
iTunes 2

Installing my music on the iPod went flawlessly. I plugged it in, the ipod was recognized and iTunes launched and all the music was loaded on the iPod.

Limitations:
1. Using the iPod as a Firewire drive seems unreliable, sometimes it mounts, other times not. If it doesn't mount properly the "do not disconnect" message on the iPod stays on. I have to shut down the mac and then it will allow disconnecting.

2. Using iTunes I can't seem to erase music tracks on the iPod. If I do change or erase them on the Mac it will update on the iPod.

Basically, until I need to start deleting songs I am happy with the way it works.

good luck.

Other limitations:

Apple's Music store is not available on iTunes 2/OS 9
iSync is not available on OS 9
