iTunes Music Store: is this worth it???
Hey people, just wondering if anyone here has used this new service. Im sure you could answer these question even if you havent tested it:
Does Apple have standardized tagging in this system?
Also, do you get album covers and other info from the download?
Is there only one standard quality setting for AAC coding?
And if there are many quality settings, which one does apple use for their store?
Finally, do you think its actually worth 99 cents per song?
(Personally, i dont think it is. mp3's and 4's are still a lossier format than the CD source, which makes the purchase of a CD feel more 'genuine'. Not to mention that CD's come with 'stuff': Jewel Case with an insert and a CD....physical justification for why you just spent 15 bucks. Mp4's are just files. Yes, the sound quality may be near identical, but they are still just files.)
--Although I know that this Apple store has had quite a number of downloads since it opened, I personally feel that the pool economy method (monthly payments for total access, like netflix or emusic) has some good potential. Of course, no better solution than Apple's has been able to satisfy the needs of record companies to control their material. Apple's current 'competition' (quoted because there really is none) eMusic.com was unable to guarantee record companies adequate control over their material, hence the lack of major record labels on their site.
Just wondering what people's opinions are about this issue.

I've used it. All the songs are 128 kpbs AAC and you get a single image of the album/single cover art along with it (encoded in the file). Songs also come with a pretty complete set of tags. I don't know who does the encoding, but it's very high quality encoding for 128. I genenerally rip my own songs at 160 kpbs and Apple's files are usually close in qualty to mine.
I've not bought a whole album, but I like it for the occasional song in cases where I wouldn't want to buy the whole album. $0.99 is maybe a little steep, but it beats shelling out $18 for a full CD when I only want one song off of it.

Am I right in assuming that this service is only available to MAC users, and that you have to use iTUNES software?
Also, do Apple only do new songs or is there like a massive back catalogue of songs online - as some of the tunes I am after can't be bought anymore?

im thinking theyll have what most cd stores have...at least for now. an online catalog like this however can easily grow exponentially, as long as theres no fuss from the rec companies. Currently its only available for MAC users andim pretty sure the only way to do the purchasing is via iTunes 4.
Microsoft has plans to release a similar service. wohoo...

Just patiently waiting for iTunes Music store to get to the rest of the world!
Me too, can't happen soon enough for my purposes. I have even started a list in my head of songs I will buy, that I would never consider buying the whole album/CD.
