So frustrated. I cant make the ipod software work.
I installed the updater from apple.com and it does not work. The update and restore buttons aren't active, and I don't know why. My mac recognizes my ipod, it shows up on the desktop, but it won't work with itunes. The updater does not work. And I don't have the software that came with the ipod, is that why its not working? Do I need the software off the disc before the updater will work?

Look at the iPod Software Updater window again. At the bottom-left corner of the window, there is a padlock button. Click that and enter your user account password if it asks you. The buttons will then become active. Either that, or your iPod has up-to-date software already.
If it mounts on the desktop and won't show up in iTunes, try factory restoring the iPod using the Software Updater you downloaded. It should work. A factory restore will delete all data on the iPod, so back up first.

This is really strange, but after rebooting several times, it worked.
