Safe to multi-task while ripping files?

I'm running Mac OS X 10.2.3.

Is it safe to run other apps or surf the net while I'm ripping CDs, or should I continue to do what I do - which is leave the Mac alone while my music is encoded?

I'm worried that a hiccup or net lag or some sort of automatic action (like an instant message from a friend) could affect the rip process, and corrupt the file.

Well, it *might* cause a hiccup in the song, but I don't think the file will get corrupted due to multitasking. Hiccups are very rare. When you're using some other app when iTunes is ripping a song in the background, try to limit the workload intensity on the computer. For example, surfing the web is fine when you're ripping a song, but try not to do any heavy Photoshop work at the same time. But if you're not doing anything on the computer while iTunes is ripping a song, it will do it faster.

wdwww:

Several factors of ripping errors:

* ZoidbergD was right: higher total system load, more errors. A bit of system load (i.e., web browsing, sending email, etc.) should not be a problem.

* Ripping software: At least on windows, EAC does a LOT of error checking to prevent errors. On linux, use cdparanoia.

* Ripping hardware: Good drives can make a significant difference. Plextor seem to be about the best.

Encoding is different. I have never heard of systematic encoding errors due to system load. But more load will slow down encoding, big time.

I sure wouldn't do it. On my PC it has caused some very deranged tracks. I haven't multitasked while burning on my Mac. I don't think I will either...

I multitask all the time on under 10.2. Never had a single bad rip
(and this is while running PS, Freehand and InDesign)

I multitask all the time too while ripping. I think iTunes was designed to perform operataions like ripping and burning in the background.

I take back what I said before; on my iMac i do multitask while ripping on iTunes; and it works fine. Multitasking on my PC however delivers some ugly results.
