Playcounts

First, I'd like to apologize if this topic has already been discussed here or in the old forums. I did a search for "playcounts" but all I got were threads with windoze users b*tching that their ipods didn't support them

Anyway, I tend to use by ipod for extended periods of time between syncing (around a week, sometimes even more) and some of my playcounts don't get transfered back to itunes when I do sync. I'm assuming that the ipod only stores playcounts for so long because the most recently played songs on the ipod seem to get their playcounts updated.

Does anyone have any information on exactly how long, or for how many songs the ipod stores playcounts? Or is it something completely different that causes the playcounts to be erased, such as charging? Any information, or a link to another thread or article would be greatly appreciated.

If any of your play counts get transferred back to iTunes from your iPod, I'd be surprised. When a song gets transferred to the iPod, it is given a new database ID, which means that iTunes sees it as distinct from the file it copied it from. Thus, it has its own metadata, seperate from that of songs in iTunes.

As an aside, I think the Windows users have every right to be frustrated that Apple choose Music Match as the iPod sync software. I've had to use MusicMatch, and granted, I'm spoiled by iTunes, but it sure is a pain in rear to use. IMHO, if Apple's going to charge Windows users the same money as they charge us, the Windows users ought to get a fully-functioning product.

My playcount and "Last played" values are definitely transferred from the iPod back to iTunes. I'm not sure about the "extended periods of time" issue though- I tend to sync fairly often.

kimhill, are you updating manually or automatically? I update manually. I've often wondered if iTunes updates the metadata for users who update automatically.

I am updating automatically- for selected playlists. Yeah, it makes sense that this would make a difference- when you update manually you break the link. With automatic updating, everything remains in sync. I believe that I've seen songs getting re-copied to the iPod after adding artwork, too.

Another cool thing about remaining in sync is that you can rate songs on the iPod- I dump new music in and am able to do ratings on-the-go, which then flow back into my iTunes database. So you can manage your main music library while you're on the Stairmaster.

I sync automatically by playlists also. Sometime I'll do a little research to try to figure out what keeps some songs from being updated.

Btw, I'm using firmware 1.3 on a Gen 1 5gb 'pod. There may be some differences between different firmware versions reguarding this issue. With 1.3 I can't rate songs on the ipod, but there is some sort of communication back to itunes from the ipod.

I had a Gen 1 5gb iPod, before, and it did communicate all the playcount & last played values back to iTunes.

so let's say i played a song 3 times in my ipod this week, and 3 times in my itunes, when i'm gonna re-sync my ipod, the playcount will be increase by 6?? is that it?

Playcounts do not get updated when you are in manual mode. Yes, I know it's stupid.

Also, if you let your battery completely drain, it will not update your library on the next sync (at least that is what happened to me once).
