Any way of ripping Copy Protected CDs on iTunes?

Hello all,

I use a 20 GB iPod and I am very angry when I buy an album that will be 'copy protected' so I can't put it on my iPod. Is there ANY way of ripping an audio CD in digital format (preferably AAC) by using iTunes or another program?

You see, i am looking foward to getting Radiohead's 'Hail To The Thef' and I NEED it on my iPod.

Thank you.

The only way to know how to defeat copy-protection is to test methods on an actual product.

One way is to refuse to buy copy protected discs! If we all did this the record companies would realise their mistake!!

Read my rants and other's views on this very subject here (http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&num=1033559293) and here (http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&num=1035694711)

I bought HTTT the other day without realising it was Copy Protected. I placed it in the iMac and iTunes popped up and started to play it. I imported the album and copied to iPod with no issues at all. I then saw it eas Copy Protected and tried it on the XP desktop - Music Match started up and played the CD fine and I was able to record it there too. My W2K laptop (work) PC also worked fine but a friend's XP laptop did not recognise it as a Music CD and would not play it.

Strange.

HTTT is actually not copy-protected in the US, only overseas.

using iTunes 4.0.1 using an iMac with Superdrive. Also worked on my XP PC using a SONY CDRW and my IBM Laptop tunning Windows 2000 using internal cd / dvd player (not sure what model). As I said before though my firiend could not play or record using his IBM Laptop with an internal CDRW/DVD

Can't explain why. All I know is I now have HTTT on my 30Gb iPod. Great al### too.

Yeah it definitely is a great album. I have an iMac with a SuperDrive yet it won't rad on my computer!!! GGRRR

UPDATE -

OK, I just relaised that I was using iTunes 4.0 (Not 4.0.1) and upgraded. Also used SuperDrive 1.0 from System Updater..

And now my iMac can read HTTT!!!! Finally!!! no more mp3 version of the record, but now in glorious AAC!! lol.

Thanks for all of your guys help, you were great.

Also, eustacescrubb I was wondering how you can activate the iTunes sharing? It seems great (BTW you have great music taste, very varied)

Thank you.

With 4.0.1, you have to use the third-party application 401(ok) ( http://mirror.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12018)

To anyone that has copied this CD to MP3 format or got it to play on a PC / MAC. Did you notice any 'pops' during some of the songs? I get a few pops during the quieter pieces when I play the tracks from MP3/ AAC or CD on the Mac but the CD in my normal CD player is pop free. Wondering if this could be as a result of the Copy Control??

I hear no pops. I'm guessing the pops you're hearing are related to the bitrate you rip at. You're probably hearing sound artifacts created by a low bitrate ("Low" = anything less than 192k mp3s or 160k AACs.)

Trouble is I also get the pops when I play direct from CD on the Mac but not from CD on my stereo.....it is only a couple of pops on a couple of tracks - very odd.

Maybe the pops are part of the song. Do the devices on which you hear the pops generally have higher sound quality than the ones on which you don't?

# 15 Re: Any way of ripping Copy Protected CDs on iTunes?
No - pops only happen when played on iMac and Ipod from BOTH AAC file AND direct from CD. Playing CD on the PC and the home CD players plays pop-free - home cd player would be the best quality system.

I can only put it down to the Copy Protection system that I believe puts errors on the CD that PCs (MACs) have trouble reading.

Not a big problem - just an interesting observation - either way Copy Protection sucks and I won't buy any more CP CDs.
