iSkin hack for docking
I really like my iSkin but did not like the way it stretched out in an awkward way when I docked it. So, I did a little snipping and it seems to work better for me. Here is the view of the back where I snipped it, being careful to use the holes that are already there as guides. The end holes are important so that you do not start the silicone rubber from ripping apart. Not sure how long this will last...

Nice. I'm also interested to see how long it lasts.

Ya how long before some tearage occurs?
# 5 Re: iSkin hack for docking
Silicone is tear resistant
You have guts and that's what it take to create new designs. Let me know how it works out

# 6 Re: iSkin hack for docking
The idea is sound as long as you cut between the circles only the tearing shouldn't happen because the iSkin was already cut on the outside circles they should just stretch. Hmm may have to do that to one of mine some time when I feel dangerous ;)

# 7 Re: iSkin hack for docking
Either stop at the circles, or continue around to the side.
If you continue around to the side, use a hole punch to create circular ends on your cut. Just an idea, not like I've tried it.

wow why disn't someone else think of this. It'd make docking so much easier.

What I personally don't like about the Speck iPod Skin is that the cut goes all the way around to the front. To me, that seems like it would make it more likely to just slide around by accident in your bag or something and expose the bottom of the iPod to scratches. But the "connect the dots" on the back of the iSkin looks like a good idea...it would not be easy to pull around, but it would be easier than what we are doing now.

The iPod in the "circumsized" iSkin definitely does not flop around. I keep stretching it over and over. I guess we'll see how it looks after a week or so of use. :D Sorry I could not resist the parallels there...
# 12 Re: iSkin hack for docking
So far it looks good after 2-3 times a day of docking...
# 13 Re: iSkin hack for docking
Great idea. Works perfect for me. While I had the razor blade out, I also chopped off the little loop on the side. I don't know what purpose it serves, but I don't see myself ever needing it.
Next I might try trimming a little off around the Hold button to make that more accessible.

# 16 Re: iSkin hack for docking
The existing holes at the end of the the slit should provide enough stress relief to prevent tearing of the silicone.
Nice *hack*! :)
# 17 Re: iSkin hack for docking
Thank you for showing this hack! My iPod is now sitting happily on its dock with the iSkin on for the first time in a while. I had abandoned the dock (even put it back in the box) when I realized just how the stretching kept me from reaching the buttons without effort. This is much easier.
# 18 Re: iSkin hack for docking
why doesnt lajo make this a design feature maybe?

# 19 Re: iSkin hack for docking
Actually, I would rather Lajo come out with a new dock that doesn't require cutting the eXo.
I actually think the market for docks and cables is ripe. Apple is really the only game in town at the moment and they will charge a premium until there is competition.

# 20 Re: iSkin hack for docking
This is a cool thread. I was thinking about doing something almost exactly like this before I found this thread...I haven't had the chance to do it yet, because both my iPod and iSkins haven't arrived yet :D
Anyway, I was thinking about this, and although I like the iSkins better than the Speck iPod Skin, one advantage the Speck has is a nub on the "door" flap that seats itself in the dock connector. This assists in keeping the flap closed, probably almost as much as the shape of the iPod itself. I think that something of that nature should be incorporated into the next iSkin design, along with the hinged bottom. I wanted to cut partway up the sides on the iSkin when I do this modification, but I don't know how much that will affect how well it holds the iPod down there. Of course, I know some people probably prefer to have the connector open so they can just pop the cable in there, but I would personally prefer to have it covered.
# 21 Re: iSkin hack for docking
I finally broke down and took the knife to the ISkin. I cut the circles at the bottom just like these photos and half-way around the side of iskin. Now I just pop the bottom off (it stays on no problem when folded like normal) and shove it into the dock.
A perfect mod...the iSkin should have come like this originally...
# 22 Re: iSkin hack for docking
I have looked at all of these solutions and so far I like the idea of a new plate for the docking station so that you do not have to remove your case to dock

Lajo,
I agree. It is very nice not to have to fiddle with the eXo each time you dock and undock (several times per day for me).
The existing iPod dock cover is so simple to remove. Just add a *special* Lajo designed replacement cover and life will be perfect!! <wink wink>
# 24 Re: iSkin hack for docking
I want things in my life that work without forcing me to do more than I have to and lets face it why should you have to remove the case. The only solution is for me to invest more money into making a cover for the docking station and that is what I am doing.

Lajo...YOU ROCK!! If you need a beta tester drop me line!!
# 26 Re: iSkin hack for docking
Lajo, Count me in on a dock cover replacement as well - I'd buy one right now if it was available. The biggest complaint I hear from friends and family who I have told to purchase the iSkin, is that they can't dock it.
BTW, I'd love to beta as well, when you get that far along. Any idea when we might see it?

Good idea lajo. 1 question. Would they be colour coated to match the exo's and xskn's or just plain white like the stock one?

man you are one cool cat for listening to the fans.
this thread is great. The pictures are nice and the idea for cutting seems pretty good. My 2 cases should be here this week. I'm really looking forward to them.

Lajo, remember the line the Natural:
"If you build it they will come"
# 30 Re: iSkin hack for docking
We are living in a great age; imagine I am in China and because of the net it is as though I was next door to you. So yes that statement if you build it they will come could never be truer for today there are no boundaries

bluntman: it's from the movie "Field of Dreams"
# 32 Re: iSkin hack for docking
a much nicer hack is to take the white cover off of the docking station. you can do this by pushing on the metal connector with your thumbs while pulling up the casing with your fingers - it pops off. Then the iskinned ipod docks without peeling.
A dedicated dock extender would be nicer, but this works now.
# 33 Re: iSkin hack for docking
Are people docking/charging with an iSkin on? I thought you had to take it out because of heat issues.
It would be so much easier if you could charge without removing the iSkin, I am sure it would reduce the amount of scratches I am getting too. I would even be happy to use just the cable and do away with the dock.
Cheers

You can. Just remove the cable from the dock, and plug it into the bottom of the ipod w/ the iskin still on. I do it every night. No harm done.

How easy is it to remove the top of the dock. I took a quick look at it and I could not really find a pry point right off. I was kind of scared to take a screwdrive to it to pry it off.

# 37 Re: iSkin hack for docking
It's really sturdy and would be difficult to break. I took 3 very small screwdrivers (jewerly type), and put them into the gaps on 3 sides. Just pressed them straight in - no prying. The top has 5 ears total. One on the front, one on each side, and two small ones on the back (one on each side of the cord connection). I little gentle persuasion, and it pops right off.

You can see the underside of the iPod dock cover here. http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12540
The release tabs on in the center of each side except for the connector side where they straddle the center connector.
As noted above, you will need to slip 2-3 screw drivers along each edge (or a butter knife :)) to pop it open. The plastic is pretty rugged.

------------------
It is easier than it looks. Pushing on the metal part (the connector) while pulling on the plastic edges with your fingertips works - I've done it twice with no problem. I guess it would be possible to damage the connector, though.
# 40 Re: iSkin hack for docking
I also wondered about the heat issues. I think that according to Apple you shouldn't charge the iPod while it is in any case whatsoever because charging causes heat to accumulate in the unit, potentially damaging the hard drive or the battery, or other components. I know that in Lajo's clever design there are "vents," but supposedly these aren't sufficient for heat transfer.
Of course, I disregard all such warnings and leave my eXo on at all times. I also rarely use the dock- unless you need a line out, the cable works exactly the same if you don't mind the 'pod lying down on the table instead of standing it up.
The dock looks best with a naked ipod in it, sitting next to a white eMac. It's an image straight out of an Apple Marketing exec's wet dream...
Lajo already knows how great a job he did with the iskin so I don't need to get into it.

Sorry to bring back a dead thread, but I'm wondering if anyone involved can let us know how it has held up to the test of time?
My evo2 will be here this weekend and I am wondering if I should apply this "hack" to my 4g 40gig ipod. I noticed that the holes on the case have changed since the 3g design, but I'm sure I could make it work.
Thanks
# 42 Re: iSkin hack for docking
I still have this same iSkin and absolutely no tearing of the silicone rubber!
# 43 Re: iSkin hack for docking
I apoligize for bring back this long past dead post, but how's the case doing? Still in one piece? Also, would a pocketdock work with the iSkin eVo case?
THanks

Still intact, but I no longer use it as I now have the iPod photo ;-}
# 48 Re: iSkin hack for docking
I have the ipod photo 40gig with a black iskin.
I haven't been using the dock, but I sure would like to.
So, I either need to cut the back of the iSkin or pry the cover off the dock, or remove the iSkin each time?
hrmmmm ...
great thread BTW
# 49 Re: iSkin hack for docking
I used a Dremel tool on the dock cover, and made it big enough to fit with a skin on my 20g. I used the 40g cover that came with the dock. Looks fine, and works with the skin on.

what do you mean the 40g cover that came with the dock?
can you post a picture?
# 51 Re: iSkin hack for docking
Thanks for the post-I did this to my exo2 case. I used an exacto knife and a single hole puncher. First I cut a slit about 1 1/2 inches long then I placed the single hole puncher into the slit and made 2 holes on each side. Then I extended the slit to the two holes. I was able to stretch the skin and dock the ipod to my Inmotion 3. Thanks OP!!!!
