UK suppliers of iPod stuff. & is the PodPaq014 any good?

Hi.
If its not too much trouble can you list UK suppliers (online) of places that sell iPod stuff.
And if possible, can you also list actual shops that sell them as well. So i can go and visit them and see what they sell in person.

And is the PodPaq014 any good?
I got a 3g 15gb iPod on thursday, and already its got a very small dent in the bottom of the screen, so im going to buy a proper case for it with my next pay check.
I wouldnt usually bother with a fancy carry case, but when ive spent ?300 on something, i want to keep it in good condition. I had a really good case for my old 32mb Rio600. It covered the whole thing, and the front had a see through plastic covering that allowed access to the buttons and screen. There was a small catch at the top that prevented it from falling out of the case, and space for the USB connection as well, so it allways stayed in its case. Is there anything like that for the iPod, the PodPaq seems similar.
The PodPaq014 seems pretty good. But the site im looking at doesnt say if it has a screen covering. Or if theres a bit at the bottom that folds open for use in the iPod dock.

Thanks in advance guys/gals.

Just had a thought.
Do you know the screen coverings that come attached to PDAs and mobile phones when you buy them? That bit of slightly sticky see through plastic? Is there a place that sells that material, cos that`d make a great temporary screen protector for the iPod.

Thanks in advance guys/gals, again.

You can get Fellowes WriteRight from places such as Staples.
If I was going to get a case for a 3G iPod I think I'd go for the Booq PodPaq Nappa (http://www.booqbags.com/Detail.bok?no=59) or the XtremeMac Deluxe (http://www.xtrememac.com/foripod/deluxe_case.shtml) - I have the XtremeMac Deluxe for my 'original' 5gb'r and I'm more than happy with it. But the 014 looks a pretty good option.

They both look pretty good. But they are US baced stores so its no good for me.
They do do alot of other types of holdalls for the iPods at the same store that i linked the PodPaq014. Goto the main page, click products, "everything iPod", then "cases".

# 4 Re: UK suppliers of iPod stuff. & is the PodPaq014 any good?
I love my PodPaq014.

I usually like all leather cases better (like my www.ebcases.com cases for my PDAs), but I chose the 014 mainly because of the belt clip.

The belt clip that is currently shipping with the 014's is not the one in the pictures on www.booqbags.com. It is extreeemely durable, and I trust it wholly. It's light years beyond the original clip.

The belt clip on the Nappa is of a completely different type. It's just the tension-flap that you'd see on the $10 leather cell phone cases. I much prefer the Snap & Swivel type that the 014 has, because an accidental swivel on the Nappa's style belt clip can cause it to come loose.

Besides, the 014's clip is removeable, making it thinner if you wish.

On the 014, does it have a screen cover?
I cant tell from the pictures that ive seen.

And how does the flap on it "lock" down. Does it use buttons? Cos the pictures make it look like mini magnets, which if it is, then i wont bother buying it, and they could interfere with the iPods HD.

# 6 Re: UK suppliers of iPod stuff. & is the PodPaq014 any good?
BoomAM,
Don't worry about the magnets - their actual field is probably too weak to affect the HD. This question came up on the old forums and was answered by tntracy (if my memory is correct) - there are stronger magnetic fields in places you might not even think about, but those itty bitty button magnets are nothing to worry about.

# 7 Re: UK suppliers of iPod stuff. & is the PodPaq014 any good?
azdude_15GB,
If the clip on the 014 is similar to the Ultra Clip used on the XtremeMac then I'd have to agree and go with the 014. I find the swivel action a real advantage when having to sit down, as the case just swings out of the way. Shame they don't use that clip on the Nappa case. (or maybe they do now?)
I like the way Booq have kept the button openings seperate from the scroll/touch wheel unlike a lot of cases where they just increased the size and shape of the original scroll wheel opening to take in the new button layout.

Are you absolutly sure?
Cos i didnt think my magnetic screw driver would harm my PC, the next thing i know, my HD fails.

I notice that you are from the UK as well.
Do you know of any non internet places that sell ipod cases?
Cos ive got a free rail pass and might as well check out some of the cases before i buy.

Cancom (www.cancom.co.uk), Micro Anvika (www.microanvika.com) are two that I know of.

Do a search of the old forums for "magnetic catches" or similar - I wouldn't be worried about their use.

EDIT - I'm feeling particularly benign this evening so I have done the search for you - here is the post (http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=ipodgear&action=display&num=1041047960&start=1)

Hmm...im sorta convinced.
Anyway.
Do you lot know of a UK shop that sells iPod accessories?
Is there a place in; (or other places)Manchester/Liverpool/Leeds/Newcastle/Birmingham/London, that i can visit that sell iPod stuff?

And what about the 014`s screen protection? Does it have a screen protector, or just a "hole" for where the screen is?

Thanks in advance.

# 11 Re: UK suppliers of iPod stuff. & is the PodPaq014 any good?
Don't know about the UK, but the 014 & Nappa only have a hole.

IMO, however, a screen protector would be silly, though... There's the flap that protects the screen almost all the time. The way I use it, if the flap is open, it's in my hand, and I don't feel that I'm going to scratch the screen.

# 12 Re: UK suppliers of iPod stuff. & is the PodPaq014 any good?
Micro Anvika has 2 'stores' in Manchester and several in London and one in Croydon.
Cancom has stores in London, Guildford, Brighton, Croydon and Cambridge.

Screen protection - just slap some PDA film over the screen - I have on mine for use with the Groove Jacket, and it is still on it in the XtremeMac case.

# 13 Re: UK suppliers of iPod stuff. & is the PodPaq014 any good?
Do Micro Anvika sell the 014`s ?
And where can i buy a PDA film thing? Im asuming you mean that covering that PDA screens come with.
And whats this, "Action Jacket Black for iPod 3G" that they sell? Theres no picture on their website or information whatsoever. Any Ideas?
BoomAM at 2007-11-15 15:55:56 >
# 14 Re: UK suppliers of iPod stuff. & is the PodPaq014 any good?
No, Micro Anvika do not sell the 014.
Staples sell PDA screen protectors (see post #3 in this thread)
DLO Action Jacket - see here (http://www.everythingipod.com/drilldown2.tpl?command=search&db=dbs/products.db&cart=10546806072260365&eqPRONAMEdatarq=DLO%20Action%20Jacket%20%28For%20N ew%2010GB%2C%2015GB%20and%2030GB%20iPods%29&searchSKU=w009-1212&max=1&eqAVAILdatarq=YES&eqTYPE1datarq=Cases%20and%20Clips&eqTYPE2datarq=Neoprene&numincat=5&position=2&mySearchString=%26eqAVAILdatarq%3DYES%26eqTYPE1dat arq%3DCases%2520and%2520Clips%26eqTYPE2datarq%3DNe oprene%26PRONAMEsort%3D1) - "Digital Lifestyle Outfitters' NeoPod was the first neoprene case on the market for the first generation iPods in 2001. This classic is re-born for this new generation of iPods. At 2.5mm in thickness, the NeoPod iPod Protector provides great protection for your iPod. Plastic protector covers iPod's screen, with cutouts for iPod's scroll wheel and buttons. Detachable swivel belt clip included."

So it has all you want for ?24.99 - and no need to buy the PDA screen protectors.

BTW - Magnets (http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=ipodgeneral&action=display&num=1030697412&start=0) from the old forum.

# 15 Re: UK suppliers of iPod stuff. & is the PodPaq014 any good?
Hmm...interesting.
So is the one listed at Micro Anvika, the same one as this?
http://cnb-host4.clickandbuild.com/cnb/shop/mannelectronics?listPos=&productID=70&search=&op=catalogue-product_info-null&prodCategoryID=6
If so, that seems pretty good. But, a couple of questions;
1) Does it definately have a screen cover.
2) Covered Buttons? or Not?
3) Does something flap down over the front of the player?
4) Do they all come with the Arm Belt thing?
5) Are they any good.

Depending on the answers to above, i might just buy that, cos Micro Anvika have stores both at the Trafford Center in Manchester, which a couple of my mates want to go to in a couple of weeks, and theres one in the New BullRing Center in Birmingham, which is also great, as my father works in Birmingham, so i could travel down to meet him after work, pick up the jacket, then go back home!

# 16 Re: UK suppliers of iPod stuff. & is the PodPaq014 any good?
1. Yes
2. No - there are cutouts for the buttons otherwise they won't work.
3. Doesn't look like it - see - if you want that feature then go for the 014
4.
5.
6. If you mean the Action Jacket then yes they do.
7. Read through the various posts in the Cases Section for remarks made by members who might have bought them.

From your questions I would say go for the 014 if you want a flapped front and get some PDA screen protectors later on if you think it needs them.
If you're not bothered about a flap over the front then go for the Action jacket.

# 17 Re: UK suppliers of iPod stuff. & is the PodPaq014 any good?
As long as it has a screen covering, it`ll be ok with me. It`ll probably be in my pocket anyway, the case for it is for extra protection.
I`ll probably nip to Birmingham tomorrow and buy it from their store.

Will every Micro Anvika store sell the Action jackets? Or just some? or None and just the Online Store?
I`d check if the Birmingham store sells it, but theres no phone number to call on the website.

# 25 Re: UK suppliers of iPod stuff. & is the PodPaq014 any good?
I can definitely recommend the PodPaq 014, and if you are still interested in screen protectors try looking on ebay for a seller called 'hollandjean'. I bought a set of three scren protectors for US$6.50. It took a week to post from US to Australia, similar for the PodPaq from booqbags.

There is also another site (www.podpac.com) that sells the pattern to make a wrap for you iPod in almost any material you like - that only costs US$1.35!

Finally in my travels for trying to protect my new 'investment' there are two other sites that sell wraps, one that actually sticks on called the BodyMask (http://www2.ocn.ne.jp/~bbshop/USA/index.html) and another that doesn't called an iPodWrap (http://www.bookendzdocks.com/bookendz/ipodwrap.htm).

The latter two are thin enough that you can cover the iPod and then put it into whichever case you want.

But IMO the PodPaq is killer - I now want one of the backpacks, even though I don't have laptop!:)

Im almost 100% settled on the Action Jacket now. Im not 100% sure yet, as have havnt brought it yet. So i`m still open to suggestions(sorry to burst your bubble MadPict, lol)
The PodPaq014 seems pretty good, but the magnets put me off. The Action jacket seems pretty good also, plus i can go and check it out before i buy so i can be sure. Ideally, i`d like something thats cross between the PodPaq014 and the Action Jacket. ie; very durable, with screen protection, and with a cover(flap), and belt clip. But i cant find anything like that from a UK store.
Do any of the cases from the following store provide this? I cant tell to be honest.

Don't be put off by the magnets - they don't have any effect on the iPod at all. Although they have stopped my pacemaker a couple of times.
(That last bit was a joke)

Thats the thing though. I am put off by the magnets, and theres no way to persude me otherwise. Being a student of Electronic Engineering and Computer Maintenence, i fully know the capibilites of any type or power of magnet and and Magnet media baced device.
BTY, should my iPod occasionally "click", not on the headphones, just "click". Im guessing that its just the HD kicking into action. And ive also notice that when you rotate the iPod in a certain way, that something rattles slightly. Im guessing that thats normal as well, as i seems to be one object clicking(sepeare click to before), and i guess thats its the internal device for the menu click thing.

# 32 Re: UK suppliers of iPod stuff. & is the PodPaq014 any good?
Ive just come up with a great temporary case for my iPod till i buy a new one.
Using the Apple case, placed inside the holdall that the Apple case came in. Brillient. The Apple case will protect against knocks, and the holdall thing to protect against everything else. And i can still control the iPod as i have the remote. Genius, if i do say so myself.

BTY, regarding the click thing i was on about, if i rotate my iPod forwards/backwards, i can hear the click.

No opinion on the "click" noise. As far as I know, the drive is the only mechanical device inside an iPod - the touch-sensitive controls are electronic rather than mechanical so there shouldn't be any movement there.

# 37 Re: UK suppliers of iPod stuff. & is the PodPaq014 any good?
BoomAM,
I really think you are putting too much emphasis on the magnets in the PodPaq case - they are weak magnets and their field is going to be pretty weak - I bet if you tested them you'd find they could probably just about lift a pin.
You could always order the case and if you're still not happy with it when you get it, you have a 7 day cooling off period on goods ordered over the phone or internet. Just send it back, with your reasons.
I trained as a Radio & TV Engineer so I have some knowledge of magnets and magnetic fields.

Still not risking it. BTY, i noticed that the other store link that you gave me (not Micro Anvika), doesnt work. Was that the correct URL?
I was going to go and get the Action Jacket today, but i cant.
I was playing football for a Sunday League team yesterday, and as i turned an opposing player on the ball, he went for a tackle, missed the ball, and hit my ankle, which caused me to topple over, twisting my knee in the process. So im pretty much grounded for the next couple of days. On the up side, it gives me a little more time to think though what iPod case to buy!

Hello again.
Just thought i`d post back;
I purchased the Action Jacket about 3 hours ago. Just got back from Birmingham.
Im quite impressed with it, small, light, gripped sides, provides good shock protection (i accidently dropped my iPod on the train, it still works!). So im happy.
Not too keen on the hole at the bottom for the docking connector, so when i got home, i cut up a old bit of black card, and placed that at the bottom of the case, below the iPod, so now the docking connector "plastic thing", wont fall out and get lost.
