iPod armor or flipstand?
Hi. I was wondering which case would be better protection for drops and such. After dropping my first ipod twice and returning it for a new one because the hold button was broken, I have been looking for a case that will protect my ipod from dropping on to the ground. I have decided on either the Speck Flipstand or the iPod Armor. They both look good, but the Armor seems better because of the foam (which I assume will provide better protection) while the Flipstand is just plastic. But the Armor is a bit more expensive so I was just wondering if the 20 dollars more is worth it or not.

I would say it is. The metal on the Armor is extremely durable, and the foam will absorb a lot of the shock...

Don't forget the desktop stand and free dock that come with the FlipStand.

The desktop stand/dock from the FlipStand isn't as important to me (although it's really cool since I have a 10 giger) as drop protection is. After looking around, the eXo also looks like a good choice. But would the armor be the best for drop protection? Is there another case that is shock absorbant but also allows me to use the iPod buttons? For drops, I'm thinking from waist height to the concrete ground. Thanks for any help.

While the Flipstand is plastic, it is extremely durable. I got a demo from the Speck people when I was at MacWorld Expo, where the guy slammed the Flipstand onto a table 5 or 6 times (when I asked him to prove to me it was durable and not "CD case quality" plastic), and there were no scratches or cracks. That's what sold me on it, and I wanted something as solid as the Armor case, but you have to open the Armor case to access the ipod wheel and buttons, and then to dock it, and you don't have to ever open the Flipstand case to change settings or to recharge/sync it. I've been using the Flipstand for 3 weeks now. No regrets.

So the plastic is extremely durable? That's good. But, if the iPod was inside the case while being slammed onto a table or falling to the ground, how would the plastic help protect the ipod?

The plastic wouldn't crack, and the ipod won't be hitting the ground directly.
What else would you expect if you are clumsy/unlucky enough to drop your ipod while in this case? This is one of the few hard cases available. Asking if the ipod is protected while being slammed onto a table, well, sorry but you have a different problem if you like doing that.

Again, this is not very helpful. While this will protect the enclosed ipod from penetration and surface damage (abrasion), it will not necessarily protect it from shock energy. Generally speaking, a stiff and strong plastic (lexan, lucite, corian, kevlar) will transmit all energy (within some reasonable range). The implication is that it absorbs no energy. If no energy is absorbed by the barrier, it is all transmitted to the body (not) being protected. Thus, no help for a drop test.
