Speck vs eXo case and add on idea
I've had my 30G ipod for about 3 weeks now and I'm trying to decide upon a case. Right now I've narrowed it down to the Speck and the eXo clear cases.
I think the Speck case is a more durable material and I like the fact that it covers the dock port. Does anyone know if the eXo case covers this port somehow? I hate carrying around Apple's litte plastic cover tab.
The eXo case comes with the screen proctector which is also a plus. I have an iSkin keyboard protector for my Powerbook and it is pretty thin but does do its job pretty well. I'm just wondering if the case for the iPod is the same material and of the same thinkness. If so, I would have to say no to the eXo skin. I would think after multiple times bending the case around the iPod to access the dock it would start to tear. I have a ActiveArmor case (which is pretty much the same concept) for my Handspring Visor that has started to do this after swapping/replacing batteries.
If I were to get an Speck case what could I use to protect the screen? Would a modified Fellows WriteRight Screen proctector used for PDAs work?
And finnaly, I really like the concept of making your own design with your iPod using the BodyMask product. Would either of these cases (the clear/frosted ones obviously) accomdate a bodymask cover in its fitting?
I really wish a company like thinkdifferentstore.com had these items all under one checkout. I'd like to get a bodymask, a case, and the soon to be released Pocketdock from one vender.

I would try doing that myself...except I wouldn't use the writerights. I've used them before on many pda's..and I just didn't like it.
But you could most definitely mod a screen protector for the iPod :)

Well I went with the Speck frost case for my iPod.
Here are my reasons for doing so.
First the Speck case covers the access port so you don't have to use Apple's little pastic clip. Second the reports I've read on the access to the hold switch I read regarding the eXo case turned me toward speck. I'm still not convinced on the material used for eXo being durable. Reports of dust collecting, smell, and just use with my laptop keyboard protector material form iSkin.com just diverted me to the other direction.
Now that I have Speck case here are my impressions. First the material is very good. Durable flexable and quite strong. I don't detect a smell, but I don't try to smell my electornic devices (I would love to see a picture of someone sniffing their iPod :) . The hold switch is very accessable sin the top part is pretty much cut open in large retangluar shape. Not as complete form fitting as the eXo. I've had the iPod with case in my pocket with the hold switch off and the frequency in which previously I might have done this without the case and the buttons would be activated is greatly reduced.
On the negative side, the case is very tight on the 30G model ipod. Takes some time to remove. There is no clear protector for the screen, but some people on these boards have come up with some interesting alternatives. The case does not always fully close (see gadeteer review - http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/speckproducts-ipod-skin-review.html)
Overall I like the case. I'm not going to buy three or four other cases to compare. Personally I find it quite rediculous some of the post with people buying so many cases. The iPod was quite a large chunk of change to put down. With cases, car adapters, car mounts, alternative headphones, and firewire adapters it becomes quite a costly little gizmo.

I bought a charcoal speck case for my 30gb ipod, mainly because I got it for nearly 1/3 the price of the exo case.
The only problem with it that I can see is that the bottom tab thing doesnt come around all the way. I think it's because part of the one of the sides of the tab is like twice as thick as the rest of the case

I've found the Fellows WriteRights to be very useful. I've covered my entire iPod in them until my iSkin arrives -- it's been about 2-1/2 months & they're still securely attached. It's tricky to get them aligned without bubbles, you have to be very patient & not do it in a hurry. Use a deliicate touch. It leaves a virtually invisible finish.
I know not everyone is happy with the WriteRights, but some of us are!
