new iSkin

I was told that the design for the new iSkins will be up early next week and production will begin next week. So, there's something to look forward to for iSkin users

Yeah, how does it go into the case? It looks completely enclosed just about...hmmmm...

# 7 Re: new iSkin
Have to agree: the iSkins look good. But, I'm still a little wary of the functionality. The silicone: very grippy for handling, but also presumably that grippiness means that slipping it in and out of your pocket becomes more difficult. Also the silicone picking up fluff and crud has been mentioned before and is another potential problem.

Are these real problems or am i just being an iPod prima donna/pedantic ****?

Any thoughts from existing iSkin users on these potential problems?

I have a iSkin and it does pick up dirt, but you can easily wash it. The new iSkin's look really good. I am gonna get one and use it with the mac-clear, which will protect the screen, buttons and the scroll wheel.

The new iskin cases look spectacular!! I was considering going with a speck one or a jam jacket (which look a little slimmer and more appealing than the slightly chunkier iskins), but a skin with a belt clip AND a screen protector? Compared to others, the new one seems a little pricey, but the nice accessories may well make up for it. Looking forward to ordering one!

P.S. I thought it was interesting that my ipod, ordered a week ago, arrived at my home on exactly the same day as the new iskin cases debuted.

# 10 Re: new iSkin
The new iSkins EXO does look like it is totally enclosed. I think you slide the iPod in through the display hole (then later place the screen protector in place). Apparently, you will be able to peel back the EXO on the bottom so that you slide the iPod into the dock - the silicone rubber will be soft and very elastic. I wonder though if placing the metal belt tabs will possibly scratch the back of the iPod.

A Quote from the guy who designed the Iskin, which can be found here (http://www.ipodlounge.com/ipodnews_comments.php?id=P648_0_7_0_C)

"The new iPod iskin is 3.0mm thick as is our current iSkin, but that is where the similarity ends. For an update: on Wednesday the test of the mold worked excellent better than my expectations. The iSkin G3 mold is a very complicated mold because the new iSkin G3 is covered at the top and bottom, no openings to insert the center mold. Many mold makers said it was impossible. Molds for these type of cases are 3 part molds, top, bottom and center. These are easy to make when you have a large opening at the top of the case, like Groove Jacket, Aqua Jacket and the previous iSkins. The iSkin G3 mold is a 7 part mold and there is no opening for the mold at the top or bottom, so how was it done? How do you insert the iPod into the case? All answers will be coming soon. I did this on a gamble, I felt if I did succeed, iSkin G3 would be the number 1 case on the market and no case of this type could come close to competing with iSkin G3 and iSkin G3 would set the new standard for what would be expected from a soft material case. My secrets will benefit the new iPod users, this will be the best case every. Loaded with 4 new features not available with any other cases of this type selling or offered for sale this month for the new iPod.

Feature #1 - top, bottom and both side are covered in the highest grade of soft Japanese silicone to offers maximum protection - feature 2 revealed in the next few days. Delivery of the case will be within the next few weeks. iSkin G3 will be packaged in a Maclear case which will you can us for additional protection when you are not using your iPod - this case will be free with the purchase of iSkin G3 from dealers supplied by www.iskin.biz"

Nah, think he's just excited about his product; inventor/designer's exhuberance or some such malady.

The 3.0 mm of silicone sounds a little heavy. I know it's a play-off the increased thickness giving more shock absorbancy for drops etc. but 3mm on every dimension means that for e.g. the width on a 30GB goes from ~19mm to ~26mm, about a third wider.

"we will start to manufacture the
10/15gb now and then the 30gb. There will be losts of cases so we won't run
out. Right now you can go the our site and see the colors by going to iPod
on our menue, we will have the same colors with the new case.
They almost have the mold finished now and the moment it is ready and tested we start. We will make about 50 of each color to help the current demand then start the 10,000 product for stock."

"When you order from us we send it to the nearest online seller to handle your order. It is too expensive to ship from China. If we have no choice we send it. All of this is decided within minutes of your order."

"Look to thinkdifferentstore.com they are offer exo at the lowest price at this momement, also look to ebay, some resellers sell there and you can get a deal. At the end of the day if you end up with the product I produce at a lower cost you are in a win win situation."

From the mouth of the iSkin man yo.

Yeah, he must have mis-written that. It must be 3mm overall larger than iPod dimensions so that it is a nominal wall thickness of 1.5mm. That would seem more reasonable.

# 23 Re: new iSkin
Yeah. This has been covered already, but it goes in through the hole that's in the front for the screen. I'd imagine you slip the bottom part of the ipod through and then pull the top part of the iSkin up around the top part of the iPod. Sort of like putting a pillow in a sham...

# 24 Re: new iSkin
Which color though?? This is soo hard! My top 6 are:
Frogger
Groove Pink
LimeLight
BubbleGum
Blue Mist

I have a lot of light pink in my wardrobe so the BubbleGum might be good. I love the color of blue mist but I already preordered the Jam Jacket in Aqua(btw, when are those comming out?). Frogger is pretty but I don't know if it might draw the eye to it in my purse. (I live in the city and am in constant fear of being pick pocketed or mugged). (Same with groove pink).
My feelings aside, which do you think is the prettiest?

I can't see how this could be accomplished, but can anybody confirm if you could dock the ipod with the exo iskin. They only show a picture with the cable attached.

I don't think there is room in the dock cavity for the iSkin also. I believe that you would have to peel away the bottom part to dock.
ipod-upod at 2007-11-15 16:10:56 >
# 28 Re: new iSkin
In one of his comments on the iSkin newspost on the main site, Lajo said that docking could be accomplished, I believe. Those posts are where most of our information is coming from. I wish he'd read the forums, too.

# 29 Re: new iSkin
"I just noticed your comment about using the docking with our new iSkin exo. You can - because of the flexibility of the Japanese silicone that I used, you can pull down on the lower part of exo (touch control wheel) and expose the sync port and once charged pull it back over the sync port to its original position. I will have some photos of how to do in a day or so. And now you know how to slide exo onto your iPod, it goes through the display opening. Both ends are covered for maximum protection unlike our previous design. This is very complicated to do because it involves a 7 part mold instead of a 3 part mold. We did it all for you to give you the best case every." quote from Lajo

# 33 Re: new iSkin
Anyone know how the belt-clip works? Looks like at some point the metal stub/blet clip will be in direct contact with the iPod, but surely not?

Also the ease of removal by the wearer is key but counter-balancing that, if it can be simply slipped out it makes it very easy to steal (maybe not so important in say Melton Mowbray, but high up the agend for NYC).

But beyond these quibbles, hats off to Lajo's designs. Plenty of very practical design features and love the way he/she's trying to distribute his/her baby as far as possible, as quickly as possible with the reseller options; sharp as a tack ... any shares/stocks available?

# 34 Re: new iSkin
i remember he said at some point that the belt clip stub is indeed protected. The only thing I don't like is the "earring", but it should be removable, so I'm fine with it.

if you guys check out the info page here (http://www.lajo.biz/iskin/exointro.asp) and run your mouse over "reseller discount" you guys will see that if you order more than 10, you can get a 40% discount!!

i was thinking... who's up for a group buy?? i'm not sure how much they sell them for, but it's probabaly no more than $20-25 as thinkdifferentstore will be selling them for $29. so... i bet lajo sells thems for $20-25. that means we could get them anywhere from $12-15. i'd be willing them to sell them for $20-23 shipped. let me know if you guys are interested.

... yea I think i'd be interested (is that a binding contract? ... oh man i'm always doing that - opening my mouth and leaking money) ... i presume you'll be able to specify colours within the group buy, otherwise we're all gonna have to come up with a consensus - i'm up for frogger with creamsicle spots ... any takers?

I'm down for a group buy, as long as we can specify colors or figure out a setup that makes everyone happy. (And by everyone, I mean me. <grin>)

this is the email i sent:
hi, i noticed on your website you say you say you give a 40% discount to "resellers" who order more than 10 iskin EXOs. i have found a bunch of people that would be interested in a group buy and was wondering if you'd be able to work something out with us. we'd probably be ordering more than 10, but less than 50, and we'd like to be able for each of us to specify our own color. so if you could, i'd like to get a price for per item it would cost for the iskin exo with belt clip and screen protector.
torchedlh at 2007-11-15 16:30:20 >
# 47 Re: new iSkin
Are they going to ship to one person, then that person ends up shipping the iSkins to everyone else? It seems we are all over the map so this could get expensive. That's why they have such things as resellers/distributors! ;)
ipod-upod at 2007-11-15 16:31:17 >
# 48 Re: new iSkin
yes. i'd be the "reseller". if i can get them for $12-15 each, it should only cost $5 or so to ship. so i can do $20-23 shipped for each iskin.
torchedlh at 2007-11-15 16:32:20 >
# 49 Re: new iSkin
Thing is, ordering 10 = 40% discount. Ordering 11-49 should be the same (40%) discount. At 30 bucks a pop retail, that's $18 each.

Do we have any cheaper shipping options? Because a $20 iSkin would be hot. Approaching $25 it's probably not worth the hassle.
colonelbobo at 2007-11-15 16:33:21 >
# 50 Re: new iSkin

Are they still kind of sticky and attract dust like a magnet? I got really annoyed by it after awhile, and it was a pain in the butt to take in and out of my pocket. The inside surface of the old iSkin/Groove Jacket is smooth and less annoying than the rougher outside surface. If only they were reversed.

My best guess is that the screen protector doesn't cling at all, but rather is a hard piece of plastic with a lip around the edge. Since you insert/remove the iPod through the screen cutout, I would guess that you insert the screen protector after the iPod is installed. Of course, that's purely a guess on my part.

The buttons and wheel appear to be exposed, but the Maclear case that comes with it is supposed to fit OVER the new iSkin, and it also appears to be a play-through.

Just wondering if the new iskin would be able to fit into the transpod (if they ever redesign one from the 3Gs). Pretty sure they will use the docking connector on the bottom, therefore if the iskin can not fit perhaps the DLO can.

after seeing how you dock the ipod with the iskin on, i was thinking... couldn't this silicone retain a "memory" of the dock position (ie silcione bottom stetched in awkward ways) and eventually become loose and not fit correctly when on the ipod normally?
torchedlh at 2007-11-15 16:43:28 >

Silicone, specially the softer grades, has excellent memory. That is, even if it is stretched for some time, it will snap back into its original shape.

somewhat yes... i assumed that the 40% discount was ontop of the reseller price. however it was not. so i could get the iskins for about $18. and when you figure in shipping and a minor charge for doing the work, it's gonna be $25 or so. so it's really not worth the effort as most people would pay the extra $5 to buy from an established reseller.
