Do You Like The New iPods?

Just wondering to see what you all think about the new iPods (3rd Generation). Yes if you like them. No if you dont.

Bought the 30gb Euro model a month ago - finally gave up with it today and took it back.

Over hyped, inferior sound quality and on euro models ludicrous volume limitations.

zeroseven, the sound quality is only as good as you rip it...

Obviously the software used to lift the track has a huge bearing on the sound quality. Personally I've been using EAC with the LAME encoder and the results from my laptop, desktop, 3 year old Rio 64 and even a Sony Clie 675 are all very good. Plenty of volume, and good tonal range, certainly at the bottom end, on the Vaio the top end always comes accross a little bright but thats really splitting hairs.

My ipod was more like an A.M broadcast than F.M.....dull. I have also compared the 30gb ipod (not mine) to a 60gb Zen and the difference is startling. It wasn't the same rip nor even the same track which makes the comparison mute in the strictest sense, but if you could have heard the difference yourself, you would know it was a firmware issue. The Zen was open, whats that terrible hifi phrase, spatial depth (?).

I also put the ipod through a Musical Fidelity A300 feeding PMC FB1's, though I had to use the heavily supressed headphone out as the line out on my unit didn't work. Again it lacked any vibrance. Plugged in the Rio and I had trouble telling it from the original CD

I've ordered a 20gb Zen and a 60gb drive to drop straight in - I'll let you know how it combines with the EAC / LAME

Hope you're happy with your tank then. I think we all have issues with Apple support and I for one was ready to give up... Not strictly with the sound quality (which is fine... I was able to run my amp out of the Line Out and use a high quality headphone and thought it was pretty good) but with other bugs. But I still think it's still the best portable HDD MP3 player out there. And now that Apple have quickly turned around my problems, I'll stick with the iPod.

And as far as I'm concerned, there are no "ridiculous" volume limitations... Where are you guys getting this from? Certainly it doesn't seem like 30mw/channel but noone needs 30mw/channel into 32 ohms...

Columbo - its difficult to quantify sound levels, I run my MDR V6's through my lap top at about 30 - 40%, the old Rio 64 at about 80%, the ipod, even at 100% was inaudible on the train. I would say at 100% it was about the level of an average TV at 'normal' listening level (dialogue not music). The buyer at John Lewis was aware there were problems with so many being returned, but mine was the first she had listened to. She laughed out loud and didn't hesitate to return my money. She went on to say that she would recommend they not longer stock the ipod (though I've since heard that they have to stock a certain amount of the apple range - or nothing at all, I know oakley do that).

I have also compared it directly to a friends 20gb model, even since the volume was reduced on that by the last software update, it still had ample volume for me. The 30gb gave about 50% of the volume of the 20gb

Interesting. It's true that the new iPods have to be run at near maximum volume but I've had no problems with <>64ohm impedance phones. Some of my semi-portables go higher, once again no problems at 70-90%. How old is the V6? You sure the volume problem is not the cobalt magnets getting knackered?

i have a 3rd gen. 15 gig iPod. I dont run it at full volume, or near the 100% mark. I keep the volume around 40%-60%.

Last post as i'm being warned off by moderators (?)

Believe me, I have listened to at LEAST 10 ipods with a variety of headphones. New, old, US & Euro spec.

2nd gen ipods running older software - excellent volume - 60/70% ample.

2nd gen ipods running latest software - 100% depending on phones

3rd gen Euro spec - at 100% volume the level is inaudible on the train with open phones. With V6's (which are fantastic on Zen, Rio, Vaio laptop and home built desktop, the 100% level is just boring, 50% of the output of my friends 20gb.

The most disappointing thing about all this is apple themselves. Zero help.

The European iPods have volume limitations built in because of a French anti-noise pollution law or something, so for some reason all Euro models have it.

I never wanted an iPod before the 3rd generation ones because of the entire exterior design. I just didn't like them before, but I fell in love with the streamlined features of the 3rd gens.
