rainbow coloured half circle mark on screen
Hi,
Some of us new IPod owners have found that we have a rainbow coloured half circle mark on the top of our screens, esspecially noticeable if you hold it in the light at certain angles. How many other folks have this? Apple tech support thinks it's enough of a problem to want it back, but maybe they are all like this?

Yep - I've got this. It's (gen3 15gig) going back anyway as the hold switch doesnt work, so I may mention it as well - may FINALLY get myself a working ipod!

I've got too. No sweat though, unless I hear that iPods are being recalled because of it.

This one has been discussed at great length in the old forum (and even quite a bit in this one if you feel like searching for it.) It's called photo elasticity. The first and second generation iPods have it, too.

same prob with my 4 days old 15gb ipod ... think about contact the apple support or the online-store i bought ... heared that on some ipods the rainbowcoloured circle is visible only sometimes, but on mine all the time ... dont know what to do now :confused: ... maybe i try to contact the apple customer service tomorrow but dont want to send my poddy back ... some guys told me thats normal on all ipod modells but i realy cant imagine that ... do you know more about? ... post it plz

Guys, this is completely normal... Hold any LCD screen at an angle, and you'll see it... I asked my physics professor, and he told me it was because of the fact that the screen isn't 100% flat, and the light hits that area at a different angle... If you look at it, you shouldn't see anything though...

I returned by iPod after noticing this halo (appears only in natural light), and was incredibly dissapointed to find that my new one has it, also. FURTHERMORE, the new one has a different colored-backlight.
Oh well. Guess that's just the way it goes.

i noticed that when i look at my G2 10gb with my polarized sunglasses on, its completely covered in rainbows. same with my car stereo face and any other plastic 'screen'.
i'm guessing the glasses magnify the effect some people are seeing.

With polarized glasses, look at new car tinted windows... they have tons of spots...

i have it, but it doesnt bug me. It doesnt show that much. i just noticed it after reading this topic and i just held it up by the sunlight.

I had it with my 2nd gen 20GB iPod and have it again with my 3rd gen 30GB iPod. I don't even notice it anymore.

mine only shows up randomly for a few moments. it doesnt stick around for extended periods of time.

I had that same problem with my Game Boy Color. But only in SUNlight, not fluorescent or something. I don't think it's just the iPods

i saw the rainbow thingy guy immediately when i took my ipod out of the box, but the little spectrum of colors changes as you hold it so i didnt really mind, and my ipod works like a charm

mine totally does that, too.
i think it's actually a magnetic interference from the headphone/remote jack that's just behind the screen right there. it seems to be less pronounced (it fades away after a few mins) when i unplug the remote. and i don't notice it when the iPod's been in the cradle all night (w/o the cables plugged in).
kinda like when you put a non-shielded speaker near a tv (don't try this at home, btw).
it's pretty mild, tho, esp when the backlight's on. no biggie. :D

This is the reason I stumbled upon this forum. I got my ipod about 2 weeks ago and noticed what looks like magnetic distortion on the top of the screen. But it can only be seen at an angle. I was bumbed about it because I didnt want to return it but thought it was a flaw. But if this is the norm then im ok with it.

Also my mom was looking at the screen with sunglasses on and it appeared to have black sploches all over the screen. You could really see the ranbow at the top even without looking at an angle.

I've had my iPod since Valentines day and the whole screen is covered in the 'Rainbow effect'. I currently have it in it's dock next to my laptop at work and the screen looks like an oil slick. It make the iPod look cheep and tacky, this is not what my girlfriend paid ?300 for.
I've read in many places that this polarizing effect is normal around the headphone jack at the top of the screen but surly if it is covering the whole screen then there is something wrong?

My 3G 15GB iPod also have the rainbow color on LCD once in a while. It's very distinct after I fully charge my iPod. Not sure why that is. Also, rainbow color appear more often near the top center of the screen where the headphone jack is located.

yes, this is definitely bad. a small, faint distortion around the jack is normal. you might have a cracked LCD or just a mis-assembled or mis-handled unit. did she buy it in a retail store or online?

Actually I have found that this only happens to me in different light. You may want to try shifting the iPod around and seeing if anything changes. When I got my 3G Pod I was so frustrated because of this but when I moved it went away!!

I can only see mine at very extreme angles. My friend's is more pronounced and can be seen from less severe angles. Very odd.

I noticed that mine have a rainbow half circle on the top of the screen yesterday.. but it only shows up when I look at it from a distance, when its standing in the dock and the light hits it at a certain angle. No biggie.

yeah well on mine i believe my lcd is broken. i get the rainbow all the time and i have even seen wrinkles in my lcd along the edge. at one point it looked like the lcd was leaking due to an all black material leaking towards the center, but i shook the ipod and let it sit for a while and it went away. i dont trust my lcd now i need to put the contrast so far up and i barely get a dark color, its not like that on any other ipod i know of. i think ill return my 3rd gen 40 gig

On my screen it comes and goes. normally in the top center near the ear bud jack. does not really bug me although if the color is very bright it might be an indication stress on the display panel.

I have the same issue on my new 15Gig 3g iPod. I noticed it as soon as I took it out of the box. Once the backlight was lit, I couldn't see it any more. I only see it in certain light settings. Doesn't really bother me. :)

I've got that god awful rainbow also. From a physics aspect, the rainbow is possible but why does the rainbow only apear in the top portion of the ipods dsplay. I believe that this is some type of mold default.
I see my rainbow just about all the time. This could be a reason to return the ipod in 18 months to Best Buy (see Best Buy Plan vs. Apple Plan)

haha, right at the end of the plan, say the screen is all messed up and they give you a new one, smart thinking
