Well do you really expect them to come in totally prestine condition. Personaly... if they were in a totally unoticable state to new models, I think Apple would sell them as new
# 2 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
There do seem to have been a couple of comments about scratches on Gen 3 refurbs. This seems to be a new phenomenon with the Gen 3 refurbs. Gen 1 and 2 refurbs ALWAYS came with a new battery and enclosure, despite the 'health warning' on the Apple site about 'minor cosmetic imperfections'.
Perhaps users can post their experiences about Gen 3 refurbs here?
# 3 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
I would be very interested if Apple has changed the way in which they send out their refurbs for the 3rd gen. Due to the very positive experience related by many on this board regarding their refurb 1st and 2nd gen purchases I have recommended to some of my "under funded" friends to look into a refurb for the 3rd gen they wanted.
Please post if a new enclosure on the 3rd gen is no longer the norm.
# 4 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
I just got my refurb 15GB 3g this week. While I did notice some minor scratches on the back and on the front, it wasn't so bad that it outweighed the GREAT savings I got from buying a refurb. :D So far, I've had no problems with it other than a couple of cosmetic imperfections.

# 5 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
i recieved my refurb a few weeks ago and i will tell you this, if these are refurbs you will never notice the difference. apple replaces the backs and tests them heavily. refurbs are a very good choice
# 6 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
Hey fiddy you must not have read the last few posts, some of the more recent ones have been coming with some scratches... so they must not be replacing the fronts and the backs, which seems to be something new that they are doing... Regardless my refurb is working like new and I wont return it unless I stop by the apple store...
# 7 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
then i must only say "my ipod didn't have a scratch on it and works like a beauty".
# 8 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
thanks I just didnt want people to read it and think if they ordered a new one it would without a doubt have no stracthes and what no
P.s wanna trade your with no scratches for my battle tested worn in ipod?
# 9 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
WARNING! The refurbs that Apple are sending out now are definetly not like new. I know I am not alone in receiving a unsatisfactory iPod, others on various forums have reported the same with both 2nd and 3rd gen refurbs. Here are some of my posts regarding this from other forums:
From anandtech (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=40&threadid=1135384&FTVAR_MSGDBTABLE=&STARTPAGE=2) forums:
THIS DEAL IS ICE COLD! Beware, Apple has apparently changed their refurb standards. It use to be that they sent you what was essentially a new unit in a the original sealed retail box. I just got my order and I am very dissapointed. No retail box, only a cardboard OEM type one. Cheap firewire cable, instead of the thicker one I got with my 5 GB refurb last year. The charger is scratched and in bad condition. The actual iPod has many scratches on both the front and back sides. I can't believe I waited two weeks for them to ship this junk to me. As soon as I get through to their CS agents (21 minute wait time, wtf), they are going to have one very ####ed customer to deal with.
From fatwallet.com (http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=18&threadid=223280)
HEADS UP EVERYONE! APPLE REFURB QUALITY HAS GONE WAY DOWN! Just got my 2nd gen 10 gb after waiting two weeks for the stupid thing to ship. To my disgust, it came in a ugly OEM box, the back of the iPod was all scratched up, there was some sort of fluid residue on the front and some scratches, and the charger was also scuffed. Really dissapointed as I've bought three 5 gb refurbs in the past from Apple and they have all come in the original retail box and were basicaly good as new. Called Apple earlier today to complain. After 30 minutes on hold the unhelpful CSR said that there was nothing he could do and that I could return it for a 10% restocking fee. I'm like wtf so I ask for his supervisor and he the CSR comes back and then offers to waive the restocking fee or give me any accessory under 25$ for free. Such a gip
Update: From ATOT, it seems that people are receiving 3rd gen refurbs in the same poor condition. So, its not just limited to the 2nd gen refurbs

Let's keep a sense of proportion people. Whether or not a refurb has a scratch or two it's a fully guaranteed fully tested unit from Apple, and as such is worth a great deal more than a second hand unit from some dodgy geezer on e-Bay. Moreover, to order a refurb you have to go through a page which explicitely says that refurbs may have minor cosmetic imperfections.
As a matter of fact, the 'cheap Firewire cable' which one of these chaps complains about is actually the current standard cable. The fat one is the old style cable.
# 11 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
hehe, i love my pod fee im never giving her away :P
# 12 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
My refurb 15GB iPod also has small scratches on front and back. But they are so small and barely noticeable that I don't really care.
# 13 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
Welcome to the world of refurbished goods. Why do you think you're getting a better price? I remember a refurbished computer I once bought (a PowerComputing Mac clone, ah, those were the days...). The computer was in OK shape, not like new, but good enough. The owner's manual, however, had pizza sauce slopped on half the pages. I thought "good crap, they can't even give me a new owner's manual?"
So if people were getting "perfect" iPod refurbs before with new metal backs & batteries, understand that was an exception to the rule. Refurbished means "We guarantee it will work, even if it isn't beautiful to look at. Thus we're giving you a good discount." If refurb always meant a brand new casing, brand new shrink wrapped box, etc., wouldn't we all want to buy refurbs?
# 14 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
Laguna we are just pointing out to other potential buyers to be wary that apple changed their policy... chill man
# 15 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
Sorry guys, been a long day I guess.
# 16 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
I'm so wary of getting my iPod now. After hearing all this talk about Apple changing their requirements for refurbished products I was going to call and cancel on monday but I just got an email saying that mine was shipped. :(
Hopefully it doesn't come too scratched up. I guess I can always buy a nice case for it and keep it in there to hide the scratches.
But for real, that just stinks that Apple will sell stuff that is scratched to hell. I'll be sure to post some pics of my iPod when I get it, hopefully Tuesday or Wednesday.
# 17 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
get an iPod, you know it makes sense. You can join the elite music lovers club :D
# 18 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
These things scratch so easily that minor scratches are perhaps inevitable. Do keep a sense of proportion.
# 19 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
Just how scratched up are these things? Mine has minor scratches now (I bought new), but no big deal. The back is still shiny. When I saw my first iPod in person (the 5G model) at a local store, it looked like someone had taken a Brillo pad or a handful of nails to the back of it. It was thrashed. It had to be intentional damage. If I bought a refurb and it showed up looking like that, I wouldn't be happy.
But if it showed up looking like mine does now, well, no biggie. Again, if you buy a new one it will look like that in a couple of weeks anyway, so why not save the money and get the refurb? Order some iPod cleaner if you are really picky. You'll need it eventually anyway, whether new or refurbished.
It would be nice if Apple went to a brushed back; it's time for a change in that regard. The shiny back does scratch too easily, but I see it as a product to be used and enjoyed, not something to put in a display case. Thus I carry it in my shirt pocket sans case/skin/cellophane/etc. My sofa isn't covered in plastic either. :)
# 20 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
The only protective case I use on either of my IPods is made by CompUSA and it is known as TAP. ;)
# 21 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
yah I think I may go to compusa next weekend and get myself the TAP warrenty
# 22 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
Highly recommend you do so fee, as far as I am concerned it is the only way to go with an expensive, relatively fragile and HIGHLY PORTABLE device!!!
Plus in many instances CompUSA has allowed people to use TAP as a "trade-in plan" essentially crediting original purchase price towards the purchase of a newer model with trade in.
So I feel kind of like I am leasing this 'Pod and will trade in right around when my TAP is up in 2 years for a newer model.
:D
# 23 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
so when you trade it in whats the best way to transfer songs + how much should it cost for a 15 gig ipod?
# 24 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
I don't have the answer as far as transferring songs from one IPod to another. I don't "store" in the permanent sense any music on my IPod. I transfer music to the IPod with a server I have with 3 drives totaling 180 gigs (I hope to add another separate 120 gig drive shortly for backup purposes) which really stores all my music. Given the volatile nature of a portable hard drive I would never recommend relying on the IPod as a permanent storage location.
As far as the 15 gig IPod it is now, for the most part, an older or "discontinued" model replaced at the same price with the 20 gig. The great part about TAP is the price I paid ($399) for the 15 gig the day I got it (the day it was released May 2nd) is the amount they will credit me for a trade in if it ever comes to that.
SO if I was to trade or "TAP" it today and they had no 15 gigs left in the store I would get a 20 gig model. But I am banking that within the two years before my TAP expires there will be a minimum of one and more probably two upgrades that I would rather apply my TAP to (remember the TAP is only good for 1 exchange or upgrade whether you use it 2 months or two years after you purchase it, so I rather get the most of it of it and sit on it to a worthwhile upgrade comes along) I have two IPod's as it is so I don?t see TAPing my 15 gig for the new 20 as making much sense. I rather do it a year from now when I can get myself the 40 with a FM tuner and LCD remote for the same price. ***blatant wishful thinking alert***
;)
# 25 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
how much should it cost?
# 26 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
Well prior to the 20 gig a 15 was $399 (we are not talking after Dell coupons or any other dealmac specials here, just straight CompUSA/Best Buy prices)
Now that the 20 is out I believe some stores are offering discounts on their remaining inventory of 10 to 15%. But to be honest I have not searched out prices on them since the 20's were released.
# 27 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
I finally got my 15 gig refurb on Saturday. Apple did upgrade my free standard shipping to free Fedex Saturday Next Day which was nice :)
The iPod came in a brown rectangular box. I was expecting the small square normal box. The iPod did have some scratches on the back. The front looks new. All the cables and such look new.
I went to Walmart and got some metal buffer from the autosection and buffed the back of the iPod. It did help. The scratches are still somewhat noticable. It isn't too big of a deal I just ordered a nice case so I won't even see the scratches.
I think it was worth it for the price.

That guy seemed to have a lot of scratches before he did that.
Or Brasso for the back.
I am getting my iPod this morning...waiting for Fedex. I plan on taking pictures, I will post them here when I get them up. It's a refurbished 10 GB 2nd Gen. (I know the focus here is 3rd, but I am guessing if the 3rd generations are coming in "bad" condition persay they'd do the same thing with 2nds as well)
# 29 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
I finally got my IPOD today after ordering it a couple weeks ago. Indeed it does have some scratches on it but I figure for $100 bucks off the regular price I can live with it. Besides they aren't ridiculously noticeable and I'll be getting a Case to hide them anyway. I don't think it's anything to really worry about. I can post some pics if you want.
# 30 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
why does this thread keep on popping up as unread... its driving me crazy!
# 31 Re: Refurbs not in prestine condition?
I have direct experience with this having ordered 3 refurbished iPods in the past 30 days.
The first two came in absolutely new untouched condition, in original box with all accessories, shrink-wrapped, with a refurbished sticker on the box.
The third came in a brown cardboard box with Apple logo, iPod sitting in foam cutout with all new accessories. The iPod was very used, at least a couple of months of rubbing and touching, with some scratches. It took a couple of hours with various polishes to bring it back to new condition. Now it looks and works like a new model.
Plus, the box had a remote and dock inside. This was clearly one of the last refurbished 10GB models available. Apple even called and tried to ask me to cancel the order.
I'm glad I saved the money by getting these refurbished models. I love Apple, use a Mac, but always felt the low-end model should be closer to $200.

Hi Scott,
Could you tell me what polishes you used to restore your iPod?
Thanks,

I used three:
Brasso ($4) - From the local hardware store, was able to get out the deep scratches. It takes a lot of rubbing and leaves the surface without gloss. These are not scratches you would get from normal handling. They look like they were causes by being tossed about in a bag with other metal objects.
Novus Plastic Polish 2 & 3 ($5) - From Tap Plastic, was able to buff out the fine scratches and polish the acrylic surface back to a mirror gloss.
The polished steel back on the iPod had a few small scratches and there was no easy fix. These require being polished out with abrasive compounds and I wouldn't recommend it. This process is like fine sanding, where each pass buffs out the marks left by the previous pass. It's not likely you can equal the original plated surface, if indeed it is plated. If it is polished metal then you risk removing the etched logo.
I tried a lot of other plastic polishes and all were too weak.

Every once in a while Small Dog (http://www.smalldog.com/) has refurbished, or demo iPods.
Also PowerMAX (http://www.powermax.com/) has a list of used iPods that changes regularly.
