How do you tell difference b/t European and US iPods?

Can anyone tell me by either looking at the unit or by scrolling through the unit how to tell if its a Euro model or US model?

No, you can't. The only way you can tell is by checking the volume w/the same mp3.

Adam,
Sorry to correct you, but on the US ipod the wheel is on the left whereas the UK iPod has it on the right! :D

All iPods have serial numbers and model number suffixes which tell Apple what country they came from.

The clock on a iPod in the UK will generally be at least 5 hours ahead :)

Seriously, the only visible way is by serial tracking that I guess only apple as access to. I think that both EU and US models are shipped with the same firmware level so that is not going to help.

Otherwise - as mentioned before - a volume comparsion will indicate.

In terms of sound, when I play a CD through my stereo system, and play my iPod through the stereo system, the CD is definately louder than the iPod. Could this be a Euro model? Has anyone tried this test? Do you get similar results?

gliderjoe, when playing any external device through a stereo i find it generally sounds quieter. :)

Best bet is checking the region code as geohar said, to be totally sure.

Thanks for the info. Mine is in fact LL or US, so that eliminates that question. I guess its just quieter when played through the stereo. It actually sounds much better in the car.

Yup geohar is right. I am the unlucky 'nearly' owner of a FD 03 limited volume i-Pod which I ordered off the Apple France website. I had to phone them this morning because I wanted to know where the hell my stuff is which I ordered on the 11th and at the same time I queried that volume cap. I had not heard of the volume cap before logging on to this website and think if I had known I would rather have waited until December to get one in New York when I visit. Anyway today I ask the Apple assistant on the phone if it is true that when my iPod gets here it will have a european volume cap on it. She says no it has a volume button not a cap !!!!! (dead serious).
