MP3 Taggin Question
I am in the process of updating my MP3 collection, its taking forever to do but I hear its vital to getting ephpod to work properly. My question is do you need to have all the info in the tag, or can it just have Artist and Song Name. All I want to appear on the IPod screen is a Artist and then a group of songs. Do I need to do add anything else to make that work? Thanks very much.
One more thing what is the difference between ID3v1 and ID3v2, I am using winamp and its media editor to update the tags but I am not sure if I am doing it right...
Thanks very much...

# 1 Re: MP3 Taggin Question
to answer your v1 or v2 question, use v2. here is some info why. (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=298&highlight=id3+tag) do a search in the old forum database for more info.
your mp3?s will play on the ipod if you only tag the artist and song, but invest the time and tag them all. you?ll be glad that you did. there are tagging programmes like drtag, idtaggit... to make it easier. search for them in the old forum database to find links, or google them.
welcome to ipodlounge! :)

V2 worked for me and Ephpod. There are free mass taggers you can use to make the job easier, especially if you have your music correctly laid out in folders.
# 3 Re: MP3 Taggin Question
I played around with Dr. Tag. Seems to be a lot more than I am after. I am waiting for my IPod to be delivered and thought I would get this all organized before it came. But I am at a road block
I am really lost with this stuff. Here is what I have on my hands.
I have 1500 or so MP3's that are all saved in one directory called "Music" They are all named the exact same way. I use Winamp to play them
Artist- Song Name
As far as tags I look at them and some are full of info and others have nothing. What will happen if I tag each song with only the Artist and Song Title and then use Ephpod to transfer all of them to the pod? What will my screen look like?. Will it know to group all of the songs by the same artist together and then open a new tree showing those songs when I scroll onto them?
Cause that is what I want..
I guess my basic understanding of tags and the role that they play in grouping music is causing me problems...
Any help would be great..

Try MMJB to tag. I use Ephpod to transfer my songs, but I use MMJB to tag. It basically goes and gets the tag for you from an internet database. You load you songs into mmjb, select edit tags, select all, and then lookup tag, and the majority of the time its dead on.
# 5 Re: MP3 Taggin Question
I just uninstalled MMJB off my computer cause I hate it. But might reinstall it if it helps in this regard. How much info needs to be on the tag in order for it to be displayed in an organized manner on the IPod? Artist? Tiltle? Genre? Album?
# 6 Re: MP3 Taggin Question
in dr tag you have the option (ctrl+w) to automatically name the tags from the filename. so you don?t need to type a single tag, if your filenames are correct. makes tagging 1500 songs easier, even if you only want the song title and the artist.

Might I recommend that you don't use MMJB to tag. It has proven to have some problems in the accuracy in its tagging abilities.
Dr. Tag or my fav, id3-tagit (www.id3-tagit.de, free) work well.
You really want these nicely to get the most out of the iPod. At a minimum you want the following tags populated:
Artist
Album
Title
Track#
Genre
The iPod will use these tags to organize your music. So, when you select Browse>Artist> and select an Artist, you'll be presented w/all their albums. You can then select an album and all the tracks on that album will be displayed based on the Track#.
You can also browse by Genre which is quite handy.
And although the iPod doesn't care about how your files are stored on your PC (what their names are or what directories they are in), the tag editors mentioned both have features to rename the files based on tags, so when you're done w/your files you can rename automatically, even creating Artist/Album sub-folders.
If you want to get that organized... ;)

To use that program, do I need to have the songs organized or will it use an internet database? I want to have album and track numbers and stuff, but I dont want to type them in manually (twice in the past week I have manually tagged 87 songs, the second time finding out that I can select multiple songs in ephpod and set the tags that apply to many songs).

Dr. Tag or my fav, id3-tagit (www.id3-tagit.de, free) work well.
the only problem with id3-tagit (and yes Ive used it) is that you have to manually add all info. Correct me if Im wrong, but there is no lookup feature like in MMJB.
I only use MMJB to tag and in my experience it is great at that. The only time I ever run into a problem with a tag is with demo songs or bonus tracks that arent listed on an album. You do have to manually input info for those, but its better to do 1 or 2 songs manually than ALL your songs. And MMJB does add all your requirements on the tag in the lookup feature:
Artist
Album
Title
Track Number
Genre
Ignodium, you question is just what I answered. Unless there is a lookup feature that I cant find on id3-tagit, everything is done manually. I dont like MMJB for anything other than tagging.

If that is the case, than Ephpod is just as good (and ephpod even has hotkeys, f2 for the title, f3 for album, f4 for artist, etc.).

Right. I was thinking the same thing earlier. If you have to manually input the info, why not just do it on Ephpod??
Some have said Dr. Tag is good as you can tag from the file name if your files are named correctly. Personally, MMJB work so good at tagging that Im not even gonna try anything else.
# 12 Re: MP3 Taggin Question
However, adding the album cover makes the files bigger, and even once you remove it, the file still stays the larger size.
# 13 Re: MP3 Taggin Question
MMJB provided a correct guess about 20% of the time. It proved more laborious in the end because I had to go through each track to check the accuracy. I already had my music arranged in folders for Artist and Album, so I used a mass tagger to get tags from filename+folders.
# 14 Re: MP3 Taggin Question
Well I guess what work well for one person doesn't for other. I've done at least 90-100 cds and tagged most of those with mmjb tag lookup and the vast majority are right. Very few instances where I have to correct anything.
I say I've done most with mmjb cause before I started using it I tried id3-tag and in my experience I didn't like it. And I did a number of disc manually in ephpod.
Try mmjb, try dr.tag, try id3-tag and find what works best for you. Id only like to add what I've already said though: mmjb uses a database for tag info, you hit find tags and it does the work for you and what I've found is its right nearly all of the time.
