VERY short battery life problem
HI, I have noticed that my new iPod does not keep a charge very long. I ran a test today, it lasted a little bit less than 6 hours. This was a continuous playback of music, I rarely touched the buttons and the backlight was off. Is this time normal, or should I consider sending it to Apple? Thanks!

6 hours isn't exactly *very* short ;) Environmental changes may also cause variations in the exact battery time, but if you think it can't be attributable to other factors like these, feel free to try your luck with another one. Come to think of it, I only got a little more than 6 hours on a full charge without fiddling with anything.

that's about what i get from my ipod - but i only use high quality vbr mp3's and as far as i understand that really drains the battery compared to 128 mp3's that apple do the batterylife tests with.

I just suffered battery melt down after only 5 hours with my 30 gigger. No back light, no messing, just music. The kicker is my bat gauge is still at 3 bars?! Its not really a big deal because I usually have my pod connected to power, but think it should be lasting longer. Oh well, I guess when I get back to the states I will bring it back and get a 40 gigger lol.

i usually get 6 hours continuous play, if your shuffling the songs this uses more battery life too..

hi, whats high quality vbr mp3? i use 192 mp3s, will that be affecting battery life?

I had been ranting about this dismal problem of the iPod forever and I can only say this: if you love your iPod, you'll have to learn to live with this, if not then get a Zen...
Anyway, there are reports of a battery replacement for the 3G iPods coming soon and it may even contain more charge than the original... fingers crossed!

VBR mp3s are encoded such that more complex sections will be encoded with a higher bitrate, and vice versa. Generally, VBRs give you consistent, high quality.
All of my own rips are VBR, so that could explain my less than advertised battery time too.
