Do not disconnect

Why does my iPod screen permanently display ?Do not disconnect?? I have spent all bloody day looking at the stupid thing, if I don?t get some help soon, it will be bouncing on the road.

I have a new 10gb iPod and am using Windows ME, Apple have suggested that my firewire card may be the issue, but the installation went well and my PC knows that the iPod is connected.

Please, please help before I go insane. Kenny.

Kenny,

Politely, I'm going to say: It's in the user's manual. Go grab it and look in it. It will tell you what the "Do not disconnect" means and what to do when you want to unplug your iPod.

----------------

Here's an elaboration on why you have to do this:
The hard disk inside your iPod has been "mounted" onto your system. That means that Windows can use it as a place to store data. Well, while it's being used by Windows, you shouldn't just yank the data cable off... it's not good for data that's going to or coming from the disk. It can cause corruption and whatnot.

So, before you yank the cable, you must tell Windows to "unmount" or "stop" the disk. Once this is done, Windows will no longer be using it. No more data will be travelling up the cable, in danger of being lost if you just yank it out.

Kurt,

Thanks for that, but when I say my iPod displays ?Do not disconnect?, I mean it does nothing else but display that message. I have successfully unmounted the thing about 20 times already, but there is no data in the iPod and the same message appears every time I place it in the docking station. Everything that is iPod related in the program list is ?not responding?.

Kenny.

Ahh, I see!

I'm not very good at tech support but here's what I'd do. If the following is true:

You have dismounted your iPod from your system. It no longer appears as a drive under My Computer. Your iPod software can't see it anymore. It is still flashing "Do not disconnect."

Then, you might want to try rebooting it. Just pull the plug (if you haven't already) and hold down the Menu and the Play/Pause buttons for about 8 seconds (until the screen goes off, comes back on, and displays an Apple logo).

This reboots the iPod and should be able to break it out of disk mode, which it is apparantley stuck in. While you reboot your iPod, take the moment and reboot your PC as well.
