getting an ipod...what software, firmware do i need?

im picking up a used 5gb ipod (older version) and im wondering what if any software and firmware updates i'll need? its a windows version and im running winxp. i guess i'll use the music match software with it ( although i hear its not good?? ) im sorry if this has been asked before and i appreciate any help, thanks!

*edit* the trader backed out on me with the 5gb so i did a trade for a 10gb *edit*

You will need depending on the varient firmware 1.3 for Mac iPods and firmware 1.2.6 for windows iPods. Both can be found at the apple website.

If you are using the very first original iPod (only for macs) youwill need ephpod & macopener OR XPlay. If you have a gen. 2 iPod (windows/mac) you can use the included Music Match or Ephpod (or a few others) I would personally recommend Ephpod for its ease of use and reliability.

Since you mentioned you have WinXP, you will need firmware 1.2.6. I suggest either using EphPod (you will not need mac opener since you are running windows) or MC9. MC9 is better, IMO.

But if he is using the very first original iPod which was only supported by macs (not PCs) he will need macopener or the equivelant.

hi thanks for all the ideas and help! its a second gen 10gb ipod. ive also been living in the old forums for the last couple of days and its a gold mine of information! i should have my ipod friday and im ready for it ( ephpod and mp3's all newly tagged!) the one thing im most suprised about as far as setting up is the tagging aspect of the ipod, if i hadnt come here and read up i would have had quite a mess on my hands:eek: so i just wanted to say thanks for all the help:D

In that case, you will only need Ephpod (if you plan on using Ephpod) and not macopener. Glad to help, and happy 'poding!
