Personalizing the iPod (more than Engraving)

I gotta start of my saying i aint no artist, but I do enjoy looking at art. (so am pretty pleased with the ipod heh heh)

I wanted to know if anyone out there has "artworked" the back of the iPOd...u know, the shiny metal part. It just seems ripe for airbrushing or painting..I am sure you could use some simple graphic design program, print of your Mac/Windows on a sticker paper, and BAM, u have a sticker to personalise your iPod.

Thoughts from anyone? Has this been done? Can it be done? Are there some artistically inclined people out there with loads of free time and money to pamper my thoughts? :D

I saw someone beadblasted their ipod's stainless steel back cover, to a rough satin finish. He also posted pics but i just can't find the link anymore, sorry. The pictures were taken indoor so it was hard to see the exact result. A shame because I was also thinking of doing that. (it takes courage!) The polished finish is nice but not practical at all, since it scratches so easily and the scratches really show.

is the front cover of the 3rd gen ipod transparent with a thin white piece of plastic behind it ?

If it is, you could take the front of, paint on the behind and when u put it back together it wont scratch. I saw a picture of sum1 who did this with an apple lap top, but i can't remember the link.

i can't remember what teh website is now, but you can buy these precut sticker sheets (shiny acrylic sort of material) you print your own design on them and put them on your 'pod.

they can be removed leaving no residue either.

they were $5.99 i may be tempted to get one, to try it out.

mmm, leapord print pod!

if your worried about doing something to the ipod itself, maybe do something to the case. you could paint a hardcase, or get a really funky case for your ipod, or even make one. i would hate to to see somebody ruin there ipod if they didn't know what they were doing, i'm pretty sure i would cry like a kid with a skinned knee if i ruined mine.

The site that 'dweebgal' is thinking of can be found here ( http://www.techreactions.com/ipod/index.htm) and is for the iPod Self Design Body Mask.

What i did, was I got a vinyl sheet, and cut it 8.5 by 11 (inches), and then put it in my printer (ink not laser)... i then went to http://www2.ocn.ne.jp/~bbshop/USA/index.html and got a templatefor my iPod... i put a design on it, and printed it... waited 3 days for it to dry, then put it on... it protects the iPod, it is only 1mm thick (now im going metric), and it looks cool... When I get bored of a design, i remove it, and use another one... really cool!

Wow, Impulse... that site looks good. I'm almost tempted to do something similar. Too bad they only ship in the states, or I'd just order from them. What kind of vinyl did you use? I assume it came with its own peel-off backing? Did you cut out the buttons and scroll wheel parts, or did you just leave them on? With the new all-touch iPods, I don't really see a point in taking those pieces out, personally. What kind of printer did you use? I'd also like to beg for some pics, if possible. I'd love to see the finished product. :D

Those BodyMasks rock! Has anyone else actually used these? Anyone know of where to find other pre-designed templates?? I can't believe I haven't seen these before. Also, has anyone had a bad experience with these? Did it screw up your iPod at all??

GREAT suggestion! :)

Ok... The type of vinyl I used came straight from Home Depot... it is 1mm thick, and is the kind that you can print on (some let the ink roll off). You do however still need to wait for it to dry. I did cut out the buttons, but on my first attempt, they were not very circular, so I took a compass thing (like a compass, but two pointed ends), and kept going in circles with the pointed end, until it was a perfect circle... I did this for the others too... I left the screen covered though...

Because the material is vinyl, it sticks to the iPod very well... It is also stretchy (somewhat), and can be made to fit almost anything. The printer i am using is a hewlett Packard. I found that Epson printers do not allow the ink to stay on the vinyl. I used the jaguar background that came with my computer. It looks very nice on my iPod, but I had to give it to my brother that went off to visit a University for a week. I will post pics when he returns.

You guys should make a search on Google to see what the real name for the vinly that you can print on is called. Or go to Home Depot (or similar, Rona, Home Hardware, etc.) and ask them for something like it.

My advice for making a template: I strongly recommend Macromedia Fireworks MX. I tried Photoshop, but the layers were too complicated.
What must be done is take the colour select tool, and take all the white out of the centre of the iPod... This ensures that the buttons are above the graphic that you put on, and only the iPod width is printed. If you guys want the template for the remote, just print the template for the older iPod's, and use the remote thatcomes with it.

If anyone finds a sticker type vinyl sheet (that doesn't leave marks), i would be interested in where you picked it up from.

If anyone wants the direct link to the templates, go to:
http://www2.ocn.ne.jp/~bbshop/USA/cutline.html

Also, the site is Japanese, but they say they only ship to the US on that particular site... I'm sure they have other ones in different countries... (common Canada!)

Well, I used some craft laminating material that I had left over, just to make a clear protective layer, and it worked okay, but its surface is textured, so I had to cut out the screen portion, and I stuck a piece of plastic (from a presentation cover) over the screen to protect it. I don't think I'll keep it forever, but it's okay for now. Maybe I'll hit Home Depot next week some time and see. But I don't have any fancy photoshop programs on my laptop, so I don't know if I'm up to making fancy designs... maybe in the fall when I have more time.

Impulse, check out MadPict's link above... it's the same product, I think, but they have an "International Shipping" page... it might be worth checking out.
