Uh oh - iPod wont connect
Ok, so I got a 10GB Mac formatted iPod off ebay, and am using xPlay 1.1 on Windows XP. I successfully loaded a few hundred songs, no prob.
Then, dummy that I am, I use the xPlay update/restore function. It downloads software, installs, tells me to disconnect/reconnect the iPod to complete.
Now, the iPod won't connect and I can't use it at all. Upon power up, I get the Apple logo, and then a picture of a firewire cable with an arrow, presumably telling me to plug it in.
Of course I do, and no change. The iPod powers down a few seconds later.
I've tried resetting (menu/play) and tried getting into diagnostic mode with no success.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Well, guess what!
I disconnected the iPod, and plugged it into the AC charger. Lo and behold, the Apple logo appeared, along with a progress bar at the bottom - it made it's way across, and it powered on to the language selection screen (i.e. reset).
All my data was gone, but the iPod works!
I don't think I'm getting power from my Firewire card - it is a 6 pin of course, and has a socket for an 'external' 12v power supply, which I'm using (from the power supply). The card has jumpers to select between the external power and PCI power supplies.
I think it is on PCI, should this cause a problem? I don't think it's getting the power it needs to charge.

Hey tintin:
Yeah, the iPod needs power to complete a restore. So when you see the firewire plug icon you have to plug it into a either a powered card or the AC adaptor--but you already figured that out I guess. ;)
Regarding your card, it should be able to be powered if it has a 12v power supply connection.
Something else you can do if it has 2 firewire ports on it is get a second cable, connect it to the AC Adaptor and plug that into the wall. Then when you plug in your iPod it'll get powered.

Well, as it turns out, the jumpers on the card were set to 'external' power. Even though I had a cable from the power supply to the card, it wasn't working.
So, I changed the jumpers to 'internal' or PCI power - now the iPod charges from the cable :)
In fact, I restored the iPod to Windows 1.2.6 or whatever - I don't have a current Mac with firewire, and thought that maybe, just maybe, having it formatted as Windows would improve performance in copying. I think it did - I'm moving 7 GB of pictures onto the drive as a backup (4000 photos of my 18 month old daughter) and the copy seems to be faster.
All problems solved!
