I use J River Media Center 9 to rip CD's and to synch with my iPod. In my experience it offers the best single program solution for my iPod.
MC9 uses LAME to encode mp3's. It also supports the LAME extensions. You can also specify your own external encoder if you want.
You can get a 30 day trial version of MC9 from http://www.musicex.com/mediacenter/

i use eac and lame and haven't had one problem with playing them on the ipod.
when you say they won't play do you mean they won't play at all... or maybe they play a bit of one song then skip to the next?
your pc isn't overclocked is it?
you didn't actualy say... are you using lame? there are a lot of options when using these 2 programs. i have always used the same options for my ripping and encoding so i don't really know if there might be any that would cause problems with the ipod, but who knows. you might try it once with all the standard\default options.
