is iPod good for a poor student like me?

My question is about the iPod user's general experience/satisfaction.

I have tried the Rio800 in 2000, and besides the fact that it looked rather cheap, it stopped working during the first week.

I keep hearing about new iPods regularly crashing.
I would not like to dish out $320 of my hard-earned poor student money, just to get a music player that crashes and freezes everyday. The iPod looks like a better piece of hardware than the Rio, but I would not like to create more problems for myself by throwing away $320 for a brick. Are you happy with your new/old iPod?

Thanks :D

I've had two, one windows 10gb and a converted mac 20gb and I have never experienced any problems at all with either. I personally like the old design rather than the new, but to each his own. I can highly recommend buying one.

Ok, a couple of things here...People with problems are IMHO 1.78 billion times more likely to post than those with no problems. I absolutely love my ipod and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it as the best HD based mp3 player available.

Any mini-HD is going to be a delicate machine, but even the flash based memory mp3 players aren't perfect, as you alluded to.

With the ipod, I would suggest that you buy it at Best Buy, and get the four year warranty for $40.00--averages to ten dollars per year, and is well worth it. Then you can rest assured you've got a fantastic mp3 for at least four years, no worries... I've had to use the warranty after about 4 months (this would have been covered by the Apple warranty as well) when my ipod shorted out--Best Buy gave me a new one on the spot.

So, without the Best Buy warranty, (or a two year CompUSA TAP), I would be a little leery of buying the ipod--that's just my opinion. But with the four year warranty, I'm happy!

Dre, I can't speak for the new iPods but I've had my original 5GB for over a year now. Absolutely no problems except that it scratches quite easily. For the past couple of months I've actually gone jogging with it everyday and it has never skipped once. Solid as a rock, also, it is quite light. Also, if you're concerned about skipping, might want to try the 10GB model as it is a single platter design, less prone to skipping AFAIK.

Also, I'm a student and I agree with you, I wouldn't want to spend all that money just to get an mp3 player that only works half the time. But I think the iPod is a safe bet.

Exactly! That 4-year warranty is sounds too good to be true. Think about it, you'll have a working iPod for the next 4 years! You'll most likely have the newest ipods as well since they will replace your old iPod with a new one. I'm heading to Best Buy tomorrow to buy a 15 gigger! I can't wait!
