going back to old ipod

i fly a lot and live with my ipod...sold the gen one with the moving jogwheel to upgrade to a touch sensitive one...i HATE it...everytime i touch the thing (picking it up) it jumps ahead two songs and its too much of a pain to turn off and on the hold when i just want to adjust the volume.

where can i find an old one with a moving wheel?...it seemed more reliable too as the new one doesnt react to the buttons as well...the volume touch sensitive wheel requires different pressures...so annoying.

The new iPod buttons take a lot of getting used to, especially if you're like me. I like to change tracks and volume constantly. The first day I had it, I decided within 30 minutes that I would return it. My friend puts the HOLD on constantly - after every adjustment he makes. Very annoying if you ask me. Why is it that you should have to look at the iPod whenever you want to adjust something? Why don't they at least have some raised dots like on computer keyboards and cell phones so you can tell where your fingers are without pressing a button? On the iPod, by the time you've figured out where you are, you've pressed a button.

My advice, get yourself a 2nd gen model with a touch sensitive wheel, but mechanical buttons.

If you are already used to the old gen, the new gen might be a bit strange and take time to get used to it, but for people who have never used the old gen, the new gen is cool and easy to use (for the majority). I never had any problems with the touch sensitivity. If the buttons are going off on their own, use the hold button.

I had a 10GB 2G iPod, and an original iPod. I got used to the new controls within a day.

i fly a lot...170 flights last year...sitting on the plane adjusting volume as i go...for ME (the only person whos opinion counts in my own personal purchase) flipping the hold button every time i want to adjust the volume is not for me...i would find it jumping tracks everytime i reached for it withmy eyes closed

i prefer the old one and did not ask for a discussion of how long it took me to get used to it...ive had it for over a month and don't like it...simple as that.

picking up the old one for ME (not you) on saturday and i could not be happier

So, what was your point in posting in the first place if you don't want any discussion or opinions about it? Do you really think anyone here gives a flying #### about what YOU think about the button design? In MY "anonymous" opinion, the only purpose this thread has served is to make you look like an ####### who likes to brag about how much he flies.

Maybe I am really strange but I never have to use the hold button on my 15gig although it is in constant use (without the remote)

I am however used to using the trackpad on my iBook which I KNOW people have problems getting used to or never quite like using. This could be an explanation why some revert to the hold switch...

I think part of the problem is in the mind. When I first used mine I was very wary of how sensitive the buttons are to the touch and tended to assume that they would be just as sensitve to everything they touch as well my fingers. This is just not the case though.

I always locked the buttons before putting the pod in my pocket or in its case, but have since found that this really isn't necessary. I have no idea how the buttons work but it must be heat or electrical current because touched by any inanimate object they don't react at all.

I never played with an orginal pod so I dont know how much more tactile the original buttons were. I must admit in the perfect world I think i would prefer the moving parts but did they suffer from a high failure rate? Having said that I have no problem with the touch pad but perhaps the combination of touch scoller and push buttons would be the perfect combo.

That's true: they're heat-sensitive like some laptop touch-pads. Personally, I usually HOLD the unit unless I need to select something and use the remote to change volume/advance tracks etc.

I feel really sorry for you guys complaining about the buttons. Let me find my violin...

Look for every product that comes out there is a percentage who will never "get it". Its hard for me to come to grasp with this reality in regards to the Ipod. I presume you guys are adults. Are unable to remember the locations of a button configuration of a device that is more simple than most toys geared for age 6 and under?

However I dont want to sound overly harsh. As other then poor motor skills you just may have large hands combined with your clumsy groping for the ipod causes you to somehow overshoot the large circular area for volume control and hit the forward button to change the song.

However Apple came through on this one. They knew your demographic existed and felt more sorry for you then I did and decided to include a remote(SHOCK!). However you guys even shocked apple by not trying the remote or failing to recgonize its usefulness and return the ipod instead.

Can you leave the i-pod in your pocket and walk around etc. without activating the buttons (3g)? Also, how long is the cable that connects the remote to the i-pod? I was thinking of getting the high-end Sony earbuds as they have a minijack halfway down the cord...

Thanks in anticipation!

# 24 Re: going back to old ipod
I walk with my iPod in my hand, and I'm sorry, just moving it around in my hand triggers the back and forward buttons because they're close to the edge. I've gotten better at not accidentally hitting them, but when I compare that to how often I accidentally hit a button on my other portable music players (never) I consider it something of an annoyance. I can see where using this player with two hands would make controlling it much easier, but what if I'm holding a bag in my other hand?

The design is not for everyone, and I'd rather have a different design. But here I am with my iPod, so what can I do about it? I could bypass it and use the remote, but I look looking at the screen and browsing around when I'm using the unit.

I don't try to make judgment about other people's habits or level of maturity. It's a matter of preference. If more than a few people are saying they have an issue, then why can't you guys believe that we're not just here because we like to whine? If you're happy with your iPod and the button set up, then more power to you. I, for one, hope Apple designs something more to my preference in the next refresh.

Oh - and I have tried walking around with the iPod in my pocket without the hold and yes - the buttons do get activated.

(1) Yes - if you keep the hold switched on. I find that the touch sensitive buttons are activated sometimes even if you're not physically touching them. I dunno, must be my aura or something.

(2) The cable is ridiculously long. So long that I actually don't use the remote - too many wires all over the place.

(3) Yeah, I use Sony 'phones with a minijack, means I can change volume though I have to pull the iPod out if I want to change tracks. Not a problem as I tend to use playlists.

Ok Ok perhaps I wasn't fair in omitting that I have my iPod in a waterfield case - which it never leaves save for charging. Before I had the special case I used to keep it in the apple case but I never used the hold button or remote then either. I don't like the idea of carrying the iPod around naked...

mammogram what it basically comes down to is that your a whiney baby. So do as you did and get the old ipod, take pictures of your lovely relationship and get on with your life. The old ipod is cheaper anyways. If you previously owned one then wouldn't it be safe to say you know where you got it? Use your head and think back to where you got it before spouting your mouth off slandering the new ipod.

Max G.-
I really don't think that you scholu switch back to an older (gen1/2) ipod, for one strong r eason. you sound like you picked up the thing, and transfered a CD on and then said to yourself, this thing blows cause of the touch sensitivity. Now, I got my ipod a week and a half ago, for the first few days the sensitive buttons drove me to hell. But I I then, as many ipod (gen 3) users have, figured out that on the top of the machine there is a hold button. Now you, being a previous Ipod user, probably know this and feel as if im trying to make you feel stupid, but make a playlist of songs you like, use your program to set the volume levels to what you want, put on the playlist and put on hold, and stuff that sucker in your pocket.

...that'll be 25$

Infamouschitlin, Hmm...so let's say you're in the middle of a playlist and you want to actually listen to something else on your expansive collection of music on your in iPod. Now that you've already got your remote in your hand, how do you break out of your play list? How do you then browse your expansive collection of music? Wait-there's no display on the remote, so you can go track by track through your thousands of songs.

The point is: not everyone wants to use it the way you suggest. At some point, you're going to want to view the unit display. I suppose you could view the unit in one hand and hold the remote in your other, but that's not really an elegant solution is it?

# 31 Re: going back to old ipod
That's why the remote has a clip on it. Clip the remote to your shirt (If you don't have a shirt, clip it to your ear lobe next to the six earrings). This frees up a hand to take your Ipod out of your pocket and pick the song you want. Then put the Ipod back in your pocket. Don't forget to unclip the remote from your ear (it does look funny).

Cant agree more.i have teh G3 ipod for 2 months now and i liked the old much more.i liked the design of it a lot more and i liked that it had sharp edges.I also liked the buttons around the scroll weel.I hope the g4 ipod will be similar to the gen 2 and not the g3.

What kind of clumsy oaf can't touch an iPod without pressing the buttons? And as for the hold comment, I don't even use hold! Just put it in the case and you can't press them by accident. Duhhh.

# 36 Re: going back to old ipod
tombertram, I guess you've never accidentally hit once of those buttons. Good for you. And I guess I didn't think of using that beautiful case that Apple supplies. Oh but there's a problem, in that beautiful case, you can't reach any of the buttons - except for Hold. No worries though, since that solves the problem. But wait, now I can't reach the buttons, but I won't accidentally hit them. But I can't reach them, but I won't accidentally hit them. What was my problem again?
