2.02 Software

Initially, apologies if this is to the wrong forum, I am not sure if the MAC software follows the same numbering scheme, making this a windows specific post, but I'm sure someone will tell me. :-)

I received my 3G 30Gb iPod yesterday from Apple :-). On checking the status, it clearly said software version 2.02. I have checked the apple website and they are saying that 2.01 is the latest release. Unfortunately, being the non instruction reading bufoon that I am, I managed to screw the iPod up to the extent that I had to reload the software back to 2.01 before I had the chance to check for new features etc. Has anyone heard of this release?

With every update that has come before, the web update has been out way before any iPods have shipped with it. So, no disrespect or anything, but I've gotta think your eyes were playing tricks on you.

That is, of course, if we're to go on past experience.

I don't think there is the overwhelming outcry for an update as there was from 2.0 to 2.0.1. There were many bugs. Though there are still bugs (and there will be bugs in everything) I don't think we'll see an update until another big outcry comes, or if Apple adds some big special feature.

If it were anything major it'd be 2.1 though. So maybe it just fixes a bug or something...

Possibly it changes the way the EU cap works, so that bsodmike's method won't work anymore.

Possibly there is no 2.0.2 yet, as they have always come out on the 'net weeks before shipped 'pods.

Well folks. It seems we have a mystery on our hands. Another user is reporting in this thread (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5949) that they too are seeing 2.0.2 on their About screen.

This person's from England, PaulC, are you from Europe? In the past, Apple had different version numbers for Euro-podders (it had the volume limit on it).

I know that doesn't seem like it makes sense. Just wondering if there's a pattern.

Wonder what's in version 2.0.2?

While perhaps true for iPods (I have no idea), that has NOT been the case with other Apple hardware. Frequently new computers will ship with an updated OS before that OS update is available for existing systems; however, that is usually associated with new hardware.

It's wierd because my iPod with 2.0.1 doesn't have any real bugs (except maybe for delay between tracks). 2.0.2 would suggest a small upgrade, fixing some bugs or whatever and I don't really know what there is to fix (certianly not much because i think 2.0 to 2.0.1 took care of most of the bugs). I was thinking that 2.1 would be the next update because maybe it would add more features or something. Maybe 2.0.2 deals with the EU Volume thing somehow (either in a positive or negative manner).

# 24 Re: 2.02 Software
I don't think so Gunner. There have been 2 different posters that have reported it. Both not related (i.e. in separate boards).

Both posters were from the UK which is why I tend to believe it's some sort of EU-only version. That's the way it was with 1.2.1 and 1.2.2.

So, any US (or non EU) 'podders w/a brand new one that has 2.0.2?

ashawley at 2007-11-15 14:38:54 >
# 25 Re: 2.02 Software
That's true. 1.2.2 put a cap on the volume for Euro iPods. Maybe this one tweaks the software to allow for higher volume, but not high enough to exceed the EU's restrictions.
ZoidbergD at 2007-11-15 14:39:47 >
# 26 Re: 2.02 Software
I wonder about that. Yes, Apple put the volume limit into the iPod to comply with the law, but I don't think they mind people hacking it to bypass it. It makes their customers happy and will lead to greater sales. The customer gets a product they want, Apple complies with the rules and stays out of trouble (after all, it isn't their fault people hack the software - how could they stop it?) and no one really gets hurt. If this update does address the volume limit, I wonder how?

I had to call Apple for something (iPod stopped responding, I have to get it replaced). Anyway when I was on the phone they asked me if I had firmware 2.0.1 or 2.0.2...I think we'll see an update soon. It sounds as if it is already out, how they asked me if I had 2.0.2...

# 35 Re: 2.02 Software
There would have to be wouldn't there? I mean by definition. If there was no difference between 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 that would mean that 2.0.1 was 2.0.2 and 2.0.2 was 2.0.1 and mass confusion would ensue.

It's not a big deal. Apple has done things like this in that past. Like they stated, it's an internal/manufactuing thing that has no effect on the end user. It's a non-issue.
ZoidbergD at 2007-11-15 14:53:07 >
# 39 Re: 2.02 Software
I would still want my Ipod to have the latest firmware, even if the only difference was the new one said "2.0.2" instead of "2.0.1".

# 40 Re: 2.02 Software
Apple added some explanation to their Knowledge Base article:
"The 2.0.2 version [...] is an update [...] to adjust the default contrast setting..."

I must say, the default contrast setting is not very useful indeed.
After a reset, it's always the first thing I'm adjusting.
But OTH, I'm not doing a reboot very frequently ;-)

# 43 Re: 2.02 Software
Well, I sent my problem iPod back to Apple last Thursday and got it back on Monday...with 2.02 installed and a note saying that they did no repairs as the iPod worked to their standards. Don't know what their standards are or what 2.02 does, but the iPod drive still sounds like a CD burner spinning and it has taken more than 4 hours for me to load 17GB of music from my Mac.

So, I have 2.02, but I also have an iPod and an Apple service experience that I'm none too happy with right now.

# 44 Re: 2.02 Software
All right. Here's my two cents.

I've had two iPods - one with 2.01, the other with 2.02. There is a difference.

Has anyone noticed how, with 2.01, the back of the screen is slightly gray, and how, no matter how much one fiddles with the contrast level, it never goes away?

That grayness is gone with 2.02 - the iPod's screen is much clearer and easier to read - especially outdoors. In fact, I'm now looking for the 2.02 update. I had to restore my iPod's software back to 2.01 and I'm not at all happy. Once you have the 2.02 version you don't want to go back.

So - has anyone out there got a new 3rd generation iPod with 2.02 installed? Would you please check to see if your installation disk is of that version, too? And if it is would you share it with me? I'd really appreciate it.

And for those of you who don't have 2.02 get in touch with Apple and let them know we want this update!!!

# 45 Re: 2.02 Software
I just bought my iPod today from the local Apple store, the lady told me they were a fresh batch. My webcam sucks, so this is the best pic I can get of my about screen. It says 2.02 on it. And what you said about the clarity is true, it looks great! Sort of white but a hint of blue.

# 47 Re: 2.02 Software
My iPod arrived as 2.0.2 with the lovely screen contrast. The updater for windows on the CD has firmware 2.0.1 I couldn't see any way around the iPod Windows preparation step so now my contrast is noticably poorer.
Having said that if Apple include the fix in the next downloadable firmware then I'll be fine.

# 48 Re: 2.02 Software
Hi,

In the space of two weeks I've had a 15gb & 10gb Ipod.

I did not check the software version on the 15gb but I've just read this thread and checked the software version on my 10gb Ipod and it is indeed 2.0.2.

At the moment, the main difference that I notice in the 10gb version is the contrast setting.

On the 15gb version I had to have the contrast setting almost all the way to the left, otherwise it was too dark to see, however, on the 10gb version it is more accurate and I need to keep the setting in the middle and it has alot more range to either side than the 15gb model.

The only other thing that I noticed is that the screen does not freeze up as much if I am quickly skipping through songs.

Other than that, I can't say that I notice many changes but then I only had the 15gb for 10 days and I've only had the 10gb for 4 days now.

Oh, and BTW, I purchashed the 15 gb from the Apple website and the 10gb from Micro Anvika in London.

Hope this helps.
