I use my 15GB every single day. That is not an exaggeration.

I use it on the bus/boat during my morning and evening commutes.

I use it when I'm out on smoke breaks.

I use it sometimes when I'm sitting at my desk working, either via earbuds or via a cable to my PC's "Line In" jack.

I use it when I'm walking about downtown Seattle.

I plug it into my car's "aux" port and use it in the car.

I plug it into my home stereo's "aux" port and use it when I have people over.

I pull it out all the time to get phone numbers that I store on it. I also have a txt file in the "Notes" section with all of the serial numbers for all of the software that I use at work, along with our network settings.

I mean, it's smaller than a deck of cards and has over 3,000 songs on it.

No need to convince you of anything. But for the sake of conversation...

Do you want one because it's cool, because you listen to music all the time and just gotta have it or figured you would put it to use?

If you have the money and feel you will put it to use, go for it. It's not about what everyone uses it for but what will you use it for?

.H?ctor.

i listen to music all the time. but only when im in my bedsit. thats the only place i can play music, through my pc.
I think the IPOD is cool and would like to use one but im not sure that i would use it out of my room. and if im in my room i might as well use my pc!...

at the moment im at boarding school in england and will be going to uni soon. i just want to know when other people use it and if that would apply to me.

My honest advice is that you should perhaps buy yourself a cheap personal CD player for ?40 or so. It won't be perfect, but it will assess whether or not you'll listen to music that much on the move. If you find you're attached to it, then you know the time's right to move onto an mp3 player. And if you don't, well you've spent ?40, not ?300.

I knew myself that I was going to be attached to my iPod because I'd been attached to my old Panasonic CD player for the previous four years. If you're not sure, then I'd really recommend you put a lot of thought in before splashing the cash. It's very easy to buy the newest technology just for the sake of owning the newest and best thing. If you're going to spend the money, then do it wisely - I'm a student like you'll soon be, and it took a lot of thought before I bought my 10GB. I love it, but if you fear you'll be anything less than thrilled with it, save the cash.

I agree. I bought one of the first generation Walkmen and for me it was a revolution. I used the thing all the time and over the years went through over a dozen of them. Getting an iPod felt like getting that very first Walkman. The price is a big factor though. Back when I got my first Walkman, if there had been a cheaper alternative that I could have used to 'test the waters' I would have done that for sure. Taking one's collection on the move isn't for everyone and you should find out if it's for you before dropping so much cash.

i agree, i started with a sony md player/recorder the found myself attached to it and with 20mds in my bag on long journies, not very fun. i then recieved about ?380 from various people one birthday, all cash no presents, thats the good way, and wehnt and bought a sec gen 10gb ipod. I used it all the time, every car journey, one headphone in my ear constantly at school, walkedaround the house with it on. I now have a 15gb and i probably use it more exactly the same. However before the ipod i hardly ever used my md plaayer. Also, you sit down somewhere, get it out of your trousers and loadsa girls appear and start asking if they can feel how small it is (haha:D :D im gonna start an ipod sexual inuendo topic) etc etc. if you only have about 4 cds dont get one, because then there really is no point at all.

Mine didn't have anti-skip either, and I was still glued to it.

How much music do you have? To be considering an iPod, I'm assuming you've got at least 1000 songs worth. I've got over 100 hours of audio on my 10GB and it's still only two thirds full. If you have 1000 songs or more, then the iPod is probably the best move you could make. If you're going to listen to it, of course.

If you want to spend the money on something 'cool' then I'd suggest you spend your money elsewhere. Forget the looks of the machine, forget the size, forget the form factor. Think of the music, and, more pertinently, the economics.

Ultimately only you can make that choice. Good luck with it.

Hey Luke, I'm a university student like you, so I understand the financial strains.

Take everyone else's considerations to heart. Once you decide to buy one, remember this: At least in the Apple store, you have 10 days to return the unit and get your money back. 10 days is more than enough time to make a final decision. If there aren't any Apple store in the UK, I'm sure other electronic outlets offer some sort of time period to return the iPod. What'd you got to lose?

I was in the same position as you but then I realised:
Hey I can carry every song on my pc around with me!
it's pretty small and I can take it everywhere
That was enough convincing for me.

i have about 800 songs and quickly rising. im also encoding at VBR 256 so its good quality (and yes i can hear the difference through my seperates)

TheSunTheSea
i think the department store called John Lewis might do this. Ill go and have a look in half term when i go home.

everlong
thats a very good point. I could take it everywhere as it is so small, and i can listen to it if and when i want... im almost there now.

any more views?

I am 16, and I had the simliar experience as beanlambert.. I had a MD player and used it all the time, but i had started getting into downloading tonnes of mp3s and getting them onto my MD player was completly useless, and i had already seen the Apple iPod and thought mmmmmmmmmm nice! If only i had the money... Then came my birthday and christmas and i got plenty of cash, no presents, so i had the money, and i just went for it, and its something i will never regret! You really have to have one to appreciate it, but i think its a good move :D

Hope this helps!

No kidding! Don't get my earlier post wrong. The iPod is the best piece of technology I've invested in for many years.

Im 16 years old, and I also hat some of you concerns.
I brougt a 15gb - it is a relly nice gadget :D
I hat kind of the same feeling as when I got my iPod as when i got my digital camera (a canon ps s45).
I has great sound, and i like it a lot.
My advice is, if you want to buy it, then do it now when you have more time to work. Even thoug $400 is a lot, I just thought about it is still $200 cheeper then in my homecountry.

if your like me and sick of lugging around a 96 case of CD's in your backpack to work you'll appreciate the ability to load all of them on something this small !

Just got one myself and am loving it - definetly one of my best buys this year! No more carrying mp3 cd's to work and back, everyone asks you about it, and its great for hooking up at parties and just randomily mixing up some tunes. I've wanted one for years, ever since i saw the 5 gig version in fact, and have only this to say: GET ONE! get one NOW!!!

oh - I have a bit more to say as well... :)

I bought mine from john lewis - the guy in the oxford street store was raving over it too - my gf just stood there bored outta her mind while two guys raved over "something that looks like a bar of soap". I can tell you, shes well jealous now though!!!!

Has anyone bought any kind of warrenty with theirs? I hear from all the americans that they buy "best buy" warrenties for about ?30 that covers them for 4 years! - i was too keen to get mine home to ask john lewis about them - just hope my lady doesnt get her hands on it!
