check it out!
-------------------
Hey all-
This is my first time posting here. I really like what i've read here.. so i thought i might make a contribution to the site.
this post is about my 3rd gen ipod that modified. i put a red gel underneath the screen so now my screen is red :) i've seen this done with 1st and 2nd gen ipods but not with a 3rd (what i have). if people like this and would like to try it, i can make a tutorial on how i did it. i have two pictures of it (the real thing is much better than the pictures). check them out and let me know if this is something you would like to do. enjoy :D

unless you know what you're doing, i wouldn't try this mod.
# 7 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
nice one. :)
your next job, a blackish blue backlight with light blue lettering (meaning the text shimmers in light blueish white. similar to a blacklight in a way) ;)

it would be just as easy (or easier) to remove as it is putting it on. it's not hard to do at all... it just takes some patience. i didn't exactly know what i was doing but it all worked out for the better. if a site admin lets me, i'd LOVE to put a page on the site. if not, geocities will do. i think i will make a tutorial tomorrow. thx for the responses. i really love these forums :D

# 14 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
two questions needs to be answered:
1. how do u open the 3rd gen case? (i suppose this will be clarified in the up coming tutorial)
2. if my ipod is currently bluelight, will this mix with the gel color? (for example, blue + red = purple?)

1) i'll show you/explain in the tutorial that i'm making. it's very very easy once you figure out how and use the right tools
2) it won't mix if you use a decent gel..
i am in the process of making the tutorial. i'm going to use geocities to host it for now. should be up soon :)

ok well despite my laziness, I made the tutorial. (i got bored - it's summer).
Here's the link:
http://www.geocities.com/ipodhakks/index.html
please!! only visit the site once! Print it off, but don't keep going to it! geocities has horrible bandwidth (like 10 people an hour) and it will shut my site down for a couple of hours if too many people visit it!
if you would like to host my tutorial, please let me know. i_is_me4@yahoo.com or iisme4 on AIM/AOL. Thanks
btw if you know how to access the ipod firmware please message me and tell me how!

# 21 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
Kudos to you, thanks for all the help!

# 23 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
That's really cool!
I don't think I have the balls to do that to my iPod....not after spending 5 Beans on it.
Um....5 Beans is $500 to all you haters:D
# 24 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
this seems very interesting. i think a nice blacklight tone would compliment the red buttons. for those of you who don't know, you can buy almost any color gel from a pro audio/light store. they use colored gels to light up stages for concerts, theartes, and what not. however, your best bet would be to buy a gel sampler. it costs only $3 online. the link is posted below. the size of the samples should be big enough for the ipod screen.

# 25 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
You want to make the gel a little larger then the screen, so you can tape it own without the tape showing, right?

correct. in the tutorial it shows what the dimensions of my gel were. just larger than the screen. There is plenty of room in there for the tape to go.

# 28 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
mos def fun, but about the extent of what i can do with my ipod. i spent all of today looking for hard/firmware hacks only to find that it would all lead to dissapointment. there's nothing more that i can do to my physical ipod at this level. i don't feel like taking off the LED's and re-soldering them because i imagine it's very complicated.
i'm very limited firmware-wise because i have windows. i can't figure out a way to edit the firmware on my ipod without having to use linux or a mac (which i don't know how to do.)
it was fun while it lasted. now i can just enjoy the cool red screen and _show_voltage. lol :D

# 29 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
Star of David Screws: HAHAH these are called Torx screws, and I think the iPod needs a T-2, T-6 or most probably a T-8.
Nice clean mod max. Opening the iPod is pretty easy, as long as you work your way up from the dock conenector. Remember that the hold switch is groved in so slide it out, not yank!
# 30 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
I actually tried this mod placing a peice of this acetate in between the iPod and the iSkin. The end result looks cool with the backlight off, but it needs to be in sunlight. With the backlight on, it looks pinkish with slight color differations in it. I'll post pics soon.

Yo Tekron...
Your iPod looks great with that Black case and red screen.
Nice job!
# 33 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
Thanks a lot. I had a vision before I even bought the gear. It's really easy to do also because mine is not inside the iPod. :)
I placed red acetate in between the iPod and the iSkin and taped the extra slack at the ends to the iPod itself, but that part is not visible. Only concerns are the pinkish effect I get sometimes that makes it look corny.

# 34 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
whoever does that is crazy...it's not worth it, just put some clear red tape over the sreen...you know someone on this forum will screw this up and ruin their ipod.
# 35 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
hot nix - There's no problem with what I did, and if you aren't totally 100% sure you are capable of doing the procedure right, you shouldn't do it. Otherwise, there is my idea.

tekron-
thanks for backing me up all the way but it's just not worth it. many of these people that post negative responses are either jealous or have no respect, or have nothing better to do with their time. you can tell these people because they comment on how i refered to the torx screws as "star of david" screws. they don't appreciate what I did, but rather the mistakes i made.
there's nothing you can do about it but deal. Do whatever makes you happy. this modification made me happy and so i shared it. big deal. see ya
(heh, i'm really gonna get slammed for this one)

# 37 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
Its information, jeez, lay off the kid. He says right there don't do it, if people ignore it then he isn?t responsible, and anyone who says they didn?t know the consequences of opening their case is full of ####.
# 38 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
But it can have good consequences if you know what you're doing.

i'm jealous?? of what?, i don't even know you.
i'm just looking out for people, thats all. my only point is that someone on this forum will probably screw something up, then no warranty, then you're out $500.
# 40 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
This is the second time I've had to say this today: please keep the posts on-topic and away from inappropriate behavior and name calling. Otherwise it will be locked.
# 41 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
Have you seen anyone with colors other than red. im really considering doing lime green if I can find it.
# 42 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
They sell many colors of acetate, go to a crafts store. You can get a huge 2' x 2' piece for like 2 beans.

# 43 Re: making 3rd gen ipod screen red
i agree that taking the risk of opening your ipod is nuts, the only way i would every do it is if i had no warrenty, and i still wouldnt. i thnik the tape idea is a great one. Now, be prepared to flame me all you want becase this is the geekist thing ive ever done lol. I took an old ti-83, took it apart(super easy), and put a blue acetate type sheet in it, it looks really nice besides there is no backlights. It was good experience if you are really thinking about doing it to an iPod. just thought id add that.
