headphone icon on screen?

When I turn my ipod 30gb on it has an icon on the upper right corner that looks like an "x" or headphones. It shows this icon even when the ipod has no headphones or speakers attached.
Any idea what this is?

It means Shuffle is on (it is actually crossing arrows). It might also be repeat, if I am misinterpreting your description. Go to the setteings menu to turn them on and off.
