Buying an iPod in the UK!? Where? Urgent!

Hi everyone :D First post here, and quite an important one ;)

This Sunday I'm off on the road helping out on an Exhibition going all over the UK. Lots of travelling - it's going to be so boring. So, I decided to get an iPod that I could use with my first ever Mac, an eMac which is an absolute god-send since using Windows PC's for all my life.

I thought, no problem - order it from Apple's UK online store. Estimated build time, 2-3 weeks! *ouch* - can't wait that long, need it in a few days. OK, I'll try Amazon.co.uk - Out of stock! :( hmmm... how about dabs.com - out of stock... PCworld.co.uk - out of stock... two london based retailers - out of stock...

No where seems to have them in stock, and Apple can't get them out quick enough. I badly need one by this Saturday at the latest - Friday would be better as I'm at a wedding on the Saturday and it'll be a pain trying to get it then.

If anyone can please let me know of a place I can order off of the web or a store in London or the south-east of England I'd be so grateful. I'm after the 15 GB iPod, but I guess I could get one of the others if that's all they have in stock.

Really would appreciate your help and as quick as possible. Times running out :D

Good luck, I've been searching for 2 weeks. :(

If they shipped over 100 of them to their UK distributors they'd probably sell out within days if not hours. So I'm not sure what Apple's problem is.

Not to mention that if you opt for engraving on the official site, the build-time magically decreases to 7-10 days as opposed to 2-3 weeks.

Have you tried the following: John Lewis, Cancom, Jigsaw 24, macwarehouse, Micro Anvika, Selfridges, possibly Harrods as well

How about getting yourself one of the older iPods secondhand? They do everything the G3 does (almost) and some prefer the look and sound of them.

I'd really prefer a G3 one as I like the feature list compared to the older ones.

Have you checked the Apple stockist list on their website. There are 19 places in London that stock apple stuff under Audio/Music and 50 under Multimedia

I spent most of yesterday ringing around looking for an Ipod.
Tried all the usual recommended places and well as the local MAC stockists and had no luck.

I simply think their are none available unless you are already 3 weeks or more listed on a wait list.

I'm sure Heelas (John Lewis Reading) have them. Also try John Lewis High Wycombe. Also try Oxford Macintosh Solutions.

I think Cancom Guildford have refurbs in stock.

Not in stock :(

Any other suggestions?

The PC World web site lists them as being out of stock, but do you think I'll have any luck popping in store and they may have one? Does the web site cover stock in all stores, or just a general warehouse? (if anyone by any chance knows :D)

I have found the PC World website absolutely useless if you are trying to find something. I saw Adobe Photoshop 2 in a PCW for ?49.99 - a search of the site kept coming up "No Result". It was only after I searched through all the software that I found it.
Monitor risers was another search I tried to do. Their search function is rubbish.
BTW, they had no iPods (not even display model) in Peterborugh store.

rare uk <-- there's your man or woman. Whining about the lack of iPod accessories in the UK. I suggested he sell his. Perhaps you should shoot him an email. I mean after all if he's unhappy about his purchase, maybe he should sell it.

I think you'll be lucky to get one! I already have two on order (see which one comes 1st) with John Lewis and Micro Anvika, Micro Anvika don't have a clue, and John Lewis told me that i can pre-order but there is a manufacturing problem or something. I guess its all about too little supply, or apple having to spend more time volume capping the EU ones .

John Lewis stock sheet said something about not until september, i hope that isn't the case.

I just want my ipod soon!

try www.empiredirect.co.uk - i got my 15GB from them a couple of weeks ago.

they do 15 and 30GB but i'm not sure if they are in stock right this minute - their site is a bit slow at the minute on my dial up connection.

I ordered a 30Gb iPod from the Apple UK store yesterday (30/7) at around 10:00am. According to emails and the order tracking site it was shipped today (31/7) from TW. So much for the 2-3 weeks that the site quotes.

They claim 6 days for delivery, does anyone have any experience of how long it is likely to take?

Thanks for the info Paul, I think I'm just going to order from Apple then.

A good note I guess - a mate of mind said I can borrow his 2G one for the week I'm away, so I guess I'll have to wait until I get back before I try again with finding one. I'll probably order it from Apple as there won't be as big a rush for it.

Thanks for all your help guys :D

A word of warning about EmpireDirect, I ordered a VCR before xmas and it took 4 weeks of emails/phone calls to get them to process the order. They still owe me a couple of SVHS tapes but I gave up trying to get them or a refund after 2 months of calls (was costing me more in calls then the tapes cost! ).

I'm sure that's not there normal business practice but they didn't seem to be any use at sorting out the mess or keeping any promisses.

John Lewis,

ah. Where to start.

Online stock level is an entirely different kettle des possions to store stock.

You can go into a store and they'll check (on their computer) which shops have what you're looking for. Except that they'll give you one answer, and the answer you'll get by actually phoning the individual stores will be entirely different.

Some weeks ago:
High Wycombe: "Reading definitely don't have any 12-in 900 MHz iBooks"
Reading: "We do have four 12-in 900 MHz iBooks"
