How do I know if the battery is charging?
I just got a 10gb iPod, and it's been a complete nightmare so far. By no means am I a computer rookie, never had major problems with hardware or software until now.
Anyway, since I read the review on the site, I stupidly assumed that my iPod came nearly charged to capacity, but what happened was that I uploaded a few dozen files to it, and before I managed to disconnect, the battery went dead and forced me to disconnect from my PC, so now when I try to use the player with the AC, I get that hideous fold/ exclamation screen and nothing else even after resetting.
So, I just left the player charging for over an hour, or at least I thought that it was recharging, except when I unplugged it from the AC and tried to do a restore on my laptop (which doesn't feed power to the iPod through the Firewire cable), the low battery indicator still showed up! Apple claims that the battery recharges to 80% in an hour, when in reality it hasn't even charged to 5%
How in the world do I even know if the battery is recharging? Remember that I can't access even the menu GUI at this point because of the crash, so all I see is the Apple logo followed by the folder/ exclamation warning whenever I press a button.
Now I know I should have gotten the 15gb model instead. That way I can charge the thing and still use it.

Okay, the unit has been plugged into the AC for nearly 5 hours straight, and when I try to plug it into the PC, it doesn't show up. When I press a button on the machine, the low battery warning comes on! This is starting to tick me off, paying full retail and taxes for a piece of trash that doesn't even have a working battery  Never will I touch iPod again if I can get a refund.

Why? One defective unit will change the reason you bought it? Not every iPod can be perfect on an assembly line. Relax, exchange it and enjoy the amazing mp3 player you own.

try a reset with the ac adapter plugged in to get rid of the exclamation folder.
you can see the ipod is charging by the "lightning current symbol" and the moving bars on the battery indicator. the battery indicator fills the screen after the ipod goes to sleep while charging. when it?s fully charged it displays full bars and says charged.
