synced ipod

one of my friends sync'ed his ipod and all his songs were erased, he has no backup (well yes but his back up has been stolen 2 weeks ago) so, is there anyway to scan an ipod and undelete files?

Yes, you'd need to get an undelete tool. They should be partially accessible, as long as he hasn't written anything over them.

when you delete something from a hard drive, you don't actually delete the data, you delete the "pointers" to the data--meaning the part of the HDD that says, "file x is located here". So, the HDD doesn't know the data is there anymore and as such will consider it free space.

Think of it this way, if you had a phone book and wanted to remove someone from it, all you have to do is remove their name, you could leave the number there, but wouldn't know what the number is to, so it'd be garbage. But if someone told you, find phone number x, you could find it by looking.

That's vastly over-simplified, but it's the general gist of how it works.

But the data is there (unless you do a full format).

any suggestion for an undelete tool?
(mac or win) because in that case thoses files are hidden ones, so it is another problem.
thank you
BTW you can retrieve data from a formated HD (had to do that on my computer 2 weeks ago)

Don't have recommendations on undelete tools, search Cnet.

Regarding the undeleting from a formatted drive, it depends on the type of format you did...Quick or Full.
