Just purchased my first Mac. Mainly because of my new 15gb iPod. Mistake?
I've been using Windows PCs exclusively for the last 16 years. Before that it was a TRS-80, Commodore 64, Commodore 128 and Commodore Amiga.
I've always been curious in Macs due to their "cult" following. Not unlike the following cars such as BMW receive. Since purchasing my iPod a couple of weeks ago I've been exposed to more Mac stuff via message boards such as this and other iPod related sites. I couldn't hold of the urge to check out a Mac any longer. I don't plan on getting rid of my PC, but just plan on using both and finally figuring out what the dedicated Mac following is all about.
I just purchased the iMac below off of Ebay for $500. I posted on iPodlounge in a different thread and received some good advice. Didn't want to spend too much in case my introduction doesn't go too well. I'm hoping the configuration I'm getting will be fast enough so that I'm not turned off just because my machine is too slow. What do you guys (and gals) think? Did I pay too much?
Can't wait to load up iTunes. I plan on purchasing the airport card and hooking into my 802.11b network. I'm going to locate this machine in my kitchen and use it mostly for music, pictures, and internet surfing.

It looks like a pretty good machine. Don't expect it to be blazing fast or anything, but it should be fast enough to run jaguar. You'll have a blast messing around with it :)

Not bad bejamin. I got my iPod AFTER I got my self a powerbook and I'm totally loving it! You will enjoy OS X quite a bit...

Definitely not a mistake, but I tend to believe it's good whenever you're learning something and enjoying it, no matter what your platform choice.
(Ha! We have him now! He's on the Mac side and he'll never go back, just you wait and see. ;) )

Good move. I spent $2800 on a new iMac a bit after I got my iPod for a similar reason (though spent quite a bit more than you!). I still have my 2 PCs; I love both my Mac and my PCs. I use my Mac to manage my media, but my PC to work on. I have more fun on the Mac :D I will say that iTunes is very cool, but I prefer EphPod; and so my iPod is still a WinPod.

Just for the record. I'm not overweight and I do workout. I eat pizza, but only occasionally. I have no desire to purchase $500 worth of pizza.

Welcome to the Mac world!
Be sure to check out iLife (iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie & iDVD)! If you are into home movies at all, you'll love being able to edit your own movies and rip your own DVD's! That alone is worth what you paid for your graphite iMac!

lsutiger, I think that's a great deal. The Office software alone is $499.00. You'll be able to do most things on that machine and learn a lot about OS X. Later on when you get a Power Mac you'll be able to keep using it on your network and it will integrate seamlessly. In the meantime you can network with any other machine on your current network.(PC or Mac)

I just orederd my Airport card and adapter. Only thing left to purchase is OS X 10.2. It comes with 10.1.
I've been searching Ebay and you can get 10.2 upgrade fairly cheap ($40), and the full install seems to be going for arount $70.
Any advantage to me getting the full version besides that fact that if I ever re-format my system I will need both 10.1 and 10.2 if I only buy the upgrade?

If you're a Mac newbie, the inability of the Powerbook to run OS 9.2.2 won't be of major concern to you, though it's a killer iBook advantage for some of us.
My advice would be to go for the best iBook you can afford and max-load it with RAM (640 MB). The G3 runs sweetly at 900 MHz, and the 12 inch G4 Powerbook (867 Mhz) doesn't offer much of an advantage. The iBook is also slightly more robust and slightly less stealable.

The price difference is appreciable between the 12 inch 900 MHz iBook and the 12 inch powerbook, but hardly enormous

One thing to keep in mind is that OS X 10.3 will be out before the end of the year. This will probably be another $120 purchase. Don't get me wrong, 10.2 is waaay better than 10.1, but if your really tight on money, you may want to wait for 10.3 ;)

I just bought the new G5,the one with the two 2.0Ghz processors in it.I naver had a mac before.Till now i have been using a 3.Ghz Amd with 1Gb DDR ram and a radeon 9500 grafic card.I hope the G5 is worth its money.I havent got it yet and never had a Mac before.
