Usb2

PC user here. Apperently I need a usb 2 system to use my ipod.
How much does it cost and is it easy to install? Also would it plug into the old usb 1 slot?

The only reason to use USB 2.0 is if your PC already has a USB 2 interface, has no free PCI card slots, and/or you are terrified of the thought of opening up your PC for some very simple surgery.

Then you still have to buy a $19 cable from Apple to hook up to your USB 2.0 port. You then need to connect the firewire connection to a power adapter to power and charge the iPod.

A much better option is simply to buy a firewire card. They cost about $29 and are very easy to install. Then you have a single cable solution for your iPod.

Sometimes I feel like the only PC user with a firewire port...

But I'd rather have a spanky new mac! Anyone like to give me one for utterly no reason? :D

Everyone I know has firewire on their PC. It's pretty much run of the mill standard on all newer PCs.

This is the third USB 2 thread I've seen in two days. Please do a search before posting duplicates/......

OR someone has a laptop that only has usb2.0 (like me)

just wondering, does anyone know why ipods cant charge off of the USB ports? Is it something technical, or is it some anti-pc thing that apple's marketing came up with

Usb is limited to 500ma/port at 4.35-5.25V nominal by the usb compliance spec. 1394 supplies unregulated 30V open circuit max, 1.5A max. The gen 2 ipod is rated 8-30V, 1A. However, there are many devices that do recharge from 5V nominal.

Thanks guys, but now theres the next phase of this question.
First do my exsisting usb ports work as usb 2 ports? And if not how much is a usb2 port and is it easy to install?

I've just recieved my USB cable and it works fine with USB1.1 as that's all my work machine has. You don't need USB2, it will give you alot more speed but unless you're going to be uploading GB of files every day you really don't *need* it.

If you going to fit an extra card for USB2 you might as well fit a FireWire one instead, the cabling is alot less hassle as you don't need the extra power socket for the charger.

Thankz anyone, if you have any more advise feel free to post, but as of now I will probably use my old apperently crappy usb 1.1. Unless my mom pulls through and when she picks up the ipod at best buy, she also reads the bottom of the note asking for a firewire carrd.

You NEED something faster than USB 1. Firewire's the thing.
