usb 2.0 or firewire connection
Hi all, i am new to this website and to the forums.......I have just purchased the new ipod 15 gb unit from amazon. I expect to receive it sometime next week. My computer runs windows xp but only has usb 1.0. This will be too slow for downloads onto the ipod as i understand....
Question is this: I will get an ungrade card but am not sure whether usb 2.0 or firewire would be better in terms of speed and the reliability of the conneciton to the ipod.
Any suggestions, comments would be greatly appreciated!!!
thanks, AL

If you upgrade to USB 2.0, your gonna have to buy the USB cable for the Ipod, so you might aswell skip that step and just go to the firewire card. Apple supporters will tell you that firewire is faster, and then USB supporters will tell you USB 2.0 is faster. Who knows.

FireWire is faster than USB 2.0 in that it has a faster sustained transfer rate. Think of FireWire more like a steady stream of data, while USB 2.0 is more like morse code: quick, but short bursts of data.

I have a question that is partially related. Apple introduced the new Firewire 800, and only the very new computers have it. Does the iPod support the Firewire 800 speeds? If so, I would recommend getting the new firewire 800 so you are ahead of the technology.

FireWire 800 will become important down the line for the Mac platform and other products, but the current iPod do not support FW 800 or ever will. The iPod's hard drive is too slow to take advantage of the new technology. What Apple could/should do is take full adavantage of FireWire 400, because the current transfer speed of the iPod is nowhere near the maximum transfer rate of FW 400.
